Summary of the case:

In this case we can see that here in this case is all about an amusement park. Where a person called
Malcolm Thornton. Basically, He is a person who works in an amusement park and he is accused
of manslaughter. Most families visit amusement parks in order to enjoy themselves. Many of them
go there only for the exhilaration of terrifying, heart-pounding rides. As long as people are still
seeking thrills, amusement rides will only become faster, and scarier. The park receives more than
a billion visitors annually from all across the world. Although the adrenaline and dopamine that
are released throughout this thrill ride draw more patrons, safety is still a concern. As the rides of
amusement parks are thrilling there are some risks involved. As a result, some people may get
injured in the amusement parks or sometimes people may lose their lives as well in the amusement
parks. There is a count that after 1972 around 170 people have died in Amusement parks. And
numerous have been injured in those thrilled rides of Amusement park rides. There can be various
reasons behind visitors getting injured or dying. As these rides are risky these rides should be in
good shape so that it stays visitor friendly. So, regular maintenance for the rides are really
important and they should be observed on a regular basis and if any problem can be detected in
any of the rides those rides should be fixed. A new thrilling ride was installed in the park in which
one ride was not perfect for the visitors and in that ride, safeguard was not ensured.

Here in the case Malcolm Thornton was later promoted into the park management position.
Basically, he was a ground worker of that amusement park at the beginning, back then he was
studying at school. Later he was promoted to operator and then later on he was promoted to a
supervisor. Lastly, he worked in a park management position. He was given complete authority to
oversee all of the park's rides, including first aid and injury management. He ought to have paid
close attention to every detail. Thornton signed all the documents where there were complaints of
problems instead of keeping an eye on them. Members of the casting team and management did
not have to abide by any restrictions. The park administration was supposed to do a trial run for
the riders every morning, but they didn't follow the instructions. Thornton's Park does not conform
to any safety guidelines or fulfil required criteria. There were no test parameters, indications, or
other means of determining whether the ride was safe or harmful, or if its performance was

3
acceptable or not. Manual maintenance was not a common practice. Moreover, if inspection of the
rides had been tough for him, he should have gone for a third-party inspection but he did not do it.
Moreover, in every season accidents or injuries were happening and there were several medical
reports every season but he used to falsify those reports and eliminate those reports as well. In
season three of the thrilling ride a visitor died and Thornton was charged with manslaughter. He
was accused of involuntary manslaughter, jeopardizing a kid in a serious manner, aggravated
assault, and dealing with law enforcement by hindering investigations and destroying evidence. In
2021.2, a trial for Malcolm Thornton is scheduled. Hence, in this case some negligence behavior
can be detected.

Identified problems:

1. Lack of leadership
Leadership is a very vital role in an organization. It is both a research area and practical knowledge.
Some are born leaders and some train themselves to be good leaders. Here in the scenario, the
organization gave Thornton a major role to play in the organization without having proper training
and evaluation. Moreover, Thornton attitude towards his work is not up to the mark and the urge
to be a good leader in the organization is absent here. Thornton is not born a good leader and he
never tried to be a good leader according to the case.
According to Mintzberg's management role managers need to have these sets of behavior like
interpersonal role, informational role, and decisional role. Here in the case, we have found that
Thornton a lack of managerial role in the organization even if he was assigned to the major
managerial role in the organization.
Here, in this case, we can see Thornton was not a good leader. He tends to hide all the news or
reports from the other employees. Even if he was a symbolic head of the organization he was not
able to perform his daily routine as a leader. For example, when the thrill ride opened in August
there was an accident but there was no action taken from Thornton. As a symbolic head, Thornton
should inspect the matter and should try to fix the problems as soon as possible so that other
accidents could not take place.

4
Moreover, this case shows us Thornton had not had the quality of a good manager like
interpersonal role, informational role, and decisional role.

2. Lack of management skills

Researchers have identified a number of skills that differentiate effective managers from an
ineffective manager. The skills that make a manager effective in his organization are technical
skills human skills and conceptual skills.
Here the case depicts Thornton lacking all of the managerial skills that should exist in an effective
manager. Technical knowledge is the ability to apply specialized knowledge or expertise. Here is
the scenario, we can see turban doesn't have technical skills or specialized knowledge in this sector.
He started his career as a ground worker but the authority promoted him to a major managerial
role that Thornton cannot able to play the role properly. Human skills are the ability to work with
understanding and motivate other people both individually or in a group. Here Thornton did not
communicate with his co-workers and tends to take decisions all alone. The important report about
the park was hidden from the entire team. Thornton also lacks conceptual skills that a manager
must have in order to be effective and efficient in the organization. Conceptual skill is the mental
ability to analyze and diagnose complex situations. Here Thornton was not cautious about what is
going to occur in the future and he was solely focused on the current situation. His main target was
to run the amusement park at any cost. So he did hide all the accident and injury reports from the
legislative and local authorities. So here we can find there is a lack of conceptual skill as a manager
in Toronto.

3. The shortfall of Systematic study and Evidence-based management

A systematic study is a relationship attempting to attribute cause and effect and draw conclusions
based on scientific evidence. In this case, we can see turtle’s amusement park did not follow this
kind of system Attic study to improve their performance, as well as lack of evidence-based
management, make the amusement park vulnerable for the visitors. There are many scientific
studies and evidence base management examples in this industry. For example, the way Disney
has managed the management of their amusement park is an example for the industry but did not
follow any kind of evidence base management even if they have enough scope to excess and

5
improve its efficiency and effectivity. Moreover, they are called another element called intuition
and instinctive feeling, not necessarily supported by research. Systematic study and ABM added
to intuition or those gut feeling about what makes others so efficient and effective. In the scenario,
we can see Thornton’s park doesn't follow this kind of management rather they are doing
traditional management in some cases below that.

Solutions to the identified problems:

In this case, Malcolm Thornton was in charge as the manager of the Amusement park. By
going through this case we have identified so many lacking in Thornton. He actually showed very
deviant behavior towards his job throughout the managerial action he has taken. He was not fair
while doing his managerial goal. In an organization, if everyone does not behave in the same way,
the ultimate outcome of that organization will be ruined. Here, Thornton was continuously
adopting unethical ways while conducting the rides. There was a huge communication gap
between the supreme authority, customers, and the manager. Thornton had hide mane reports and
documents of accidents that occurred in this Amusement park. Based on all of his freakish and
deviant behavior. We have found out some recommendations that would improve the overall
activities of this Amusement park and the management system.

In an Organization, if different people respond in different ways then the goal is not achieved.
Malcolm Thornton’s behavior towards his job should be more flexible and his he should develop
his human behavior skills. Malcolm Thornton’s cognitive view was negative toward his profession
and he should improve this by learning from his past experience and others’ occurrences. So he
should work on this because if the very basic purpose of his profession is wrong then he cannot
achieve the goal.

They should improve their inspection Policy so that it does not get corrupted. So Malcolm
Thornton should improve his management by wandering around in his duty. He must do regular
basis proctoring during office hours and his supervision will develop more efficiency in his job
and will change the quality of engagement. He should develop his management skills by taking
training from outside.

6
His technical skills were weak so he should improve. He is unable to work with his employee
because his human skills are weak. If he develops these skills then it would be easier for him to
work with people by giving the right direction. He should improve his conceptual skills because
he has a low idea about the future. He does not know what will happen in the future and he is
always dependent on short-term goals.

Malcolm Thornton is not showed proper Citizenship behavior. He should improve his citizenship
behavior activity and which will help him to be more proactive in his profession. His personality
is lack pro-activeness and he should develop this behavior.

Their organizational power distance was too low thereby Malcolm Thornton took all decisions by
himself but if they assign a new employee besides Malcolm Thornton then the whole inspection
and communication process would be more effective. Their organizational culture is not favorable
so they should improve more effective decisions to improve their organizational culture. They
should implement some new policies and look after all those to improve better organizational
practice.

Thornton has to improve several managerial roles. He needs to enhance the monitoring and
direction process towards the employees. He needs to perform a number of routine duties of legal
nature. Thornton must have to act as a disturbance handler and resource allocator in order to correct
the organization’s uprising problems and make significant decisions.

Thornton needs to work more on scientific measurement and evidence management in order to
improve the riding facilities. To make the thriller ride safer there is no alternative to taking
scientific measurements.

It has been seen that Thornton was continuously adopting unethical ways to hide reports of
accidents so that he could get rid of all blames. He wanted to avoid all of these incidents that
occurred in this amusement park and as a result, all the accidents that took place in this park were
hidden. Thornton needs to be accused by the court of these unethical activities so that no one gets
the courage to do so in the future.

One of the mistakes that the amusement park’s authority made was recruiting a teenager for such
a job. They need to be careful while recruiting the managerial personnel so that the park can get
rid of the potential risks.

7
Thornton lacks motivation from the higher authority to perform his job ethically and fluently. He
needs to be got motivated by the authority so that he could find interest in his job and perform
ethically toward the customers. His citizenship behavior could be upgraded through the motivation
of higher authority.
