Q1.
This figure shows a multistage atmospheric
distillation column for crude oil
fractionation.
(a) Given that the crude oil is potentially
fractionated into atmospheric gas oil,
kerosene, naphtha and diesel. Identify
the potential products withdrawn from
the side stream of (i), (ii), (iii) and (iv). (2
marks)
(b) Identify the two processes (A) and (B),
which are highlighted by the dotted line
in the figure. (2 marks)
(c) Outline the operating principles of an
atmospheric distillation unit. Your
description should include the roles of
both processes (A) and (B) in this
distillation unit as well. (6 marks)
Q2.
Describe the working principle of three types of trays in a distillation column with
the help of diagrams. Next, discuss which one is the best to be used in a crude
distillation unit with appropriate justification.

Q3.
In petroleum refining, the Vacuum Distillation Unit (VDU) is a secondary
processing unit. By using a schematic diagram of VDU, describe the function of
VDU with complete side cuts.

Q4. Crude oil is initially processed in the crude atmospheric and vacuum
distillation units after being delivered to the refinery by pipeline or tanker. Write a
short report on:
(1) the physical hazards of the crude distillation process and
(2) hazards related to the failure of equipment in the crude distillation system.
