STRUCTURES (60 marks)
Instruction: This section consists of THREE (3) structured questions.
Answer any ALL questions.

QUESTION 1

With reference to the safety devices on a large marine diesel engine:


a) Sketch and label the cylinder relief valve.
(10 marks)
b) i. Explain the function of the valve.
(6 marks)
ii. List FOUR (4) causes relief valve lifted.
(4 marks)

QUESTION 2

A 4-stroke 4 cylinder marine diesel engine uses a hydrocarbon fuel. The Orsat
analysis of the products gave: CH4 = 50%, H2 = 25%, CO2 = 6% , O2 = 3% ,
CO = 12% , N2 = 4% by volume. Consider 100 moles of fuel and 100X moles of air in
a stoichiometric reaction.

Calculate:

a) the stoichiometric air-fuel ratio by volume.

b) the wet volumetric and mass analysis of the products of combustion.

i. Explain briefly THREE (3) injector problems.

QUESTION 4

During a performance test on an internal combustion engine the following results


were obtained:

Fuel consumption = 2.46 tonne/h


Calorific value = 44 MJ/kg
Brake power = 10 MW
Mass flow rate of cooling water = 350 tonne/h
Temperature rise of cooling water = 20°C
Air fuel ratio = 24 to 1
Specific heat capacity of gas at constant pressure = 1.3 kJ/kgK
Specific heat capacity of cooling water = 4.18 kJ/kgK
Air temperature = 20°C
Exhaust gas temperature = 452°C

Calculate:

a) the total heat supplied from fuel to the engine in J/h

b) the heat loss to brake power in J/h

c) the heat loss to cooling water in J/h

QUESTION 5

a) With reference to cylinder head valves, explain briefly THREE (3) causes and
TWO (2) effects of the following faults:

i. Stickiness in starting air valve operation.

ii. Shrouding of air inlet and exhaust valve seats.
(5 marks)
iii. Burning of exhaust valve seats.
(5 marks)

b) With reference to the fuel injection process, explain briefly ‘Cetane Number’.

QUESTION 6

An electric generator geared to the gas turbine unit has a pressure ratio of 6/1 and a
maximum cycle temperature of 600◦C. The isentropic efficiency of the compressor
and turbine are 0.82 and 0.85 respectively.

a) Sketch and label the gas turbine cycle and T-s diagram.
(4 marks)

b) Calculate the power out-put in kW of an electric generator when the air enters
the compressor at 15◦C at the rate of 15 kg/s.
