THE RISE OF BRITISH EMPIRE

The British Empire was the largest Empire to exist at any point of the history and with its power
and influence streched all over the globe. One of the reasons is probably the geographical
position of Great Britain and as it was an isolated island, it gave a major advantage to the
growing Empire. Also, as Britain is surrounded by an Atlantic Ocean, they invested a lot into
navy, which made it easy for them to reach foreign lands. That’s why we today have English as
the first global language, that was spread through its colonies and dominance. Definitely, the
Victorian era or the golden age was creditable for the creation of such a large empire, but till
then there was unstability in monarchy. Before that there was a dispute between the Parlament
and the crown and the main reason was hiding behind the religion. Oliver Cromwell was an
unstable person who sought for help in religion, he was a devout Puritan, and later his moral
values influenced the whole history and became one of the important causes for starting a civil
war. But on the other side, Charles the I, by marrying a Roman Catholic, gained mistrust from
Puritans believed that he was the rightful king chosen by a God. Charls tried to diminish the
spreading of Puritan religion, which lead to the problems between the Crown and Parliament,
who then refused to further fund for military operations. People were choosing the sides and
eventually two armies were created – a royal one Cavaliers and parlamentarian- Roundheads. In
the beginning, Cavaliers were winning over, since as Pekić says „The infantry of the Parliament
is an untrained, undisciplined and more alike heartfelt mob of petty bourgeoisie, which manages
better in fanatical quarrels over religion than in skill with a sword“. But Oliver Cromwells policy
had bigger influence than the stronger weapons, so by the end of the Civil War, Charles the I was
imprisoned and later executed. Under the rule of Oliver Cromwell, England became a Republic,
but soon after that people objected to the policies of his Puritan regime and after only a decade of
ruling, he died. There were many people killed during the Civil War and also even the art,
Renaissance period, suffered because of the religion. The story of this war period ends with
