Historical Fiction

Hi, my name is Nikolas and I am a male helot of the spartan military but for the most part

I live on a farm. I am a lower class worker that is a part of the Sparta military when needed. I am

from the Messenia territory which the Sparta military took over and now I am forced to be a part

of it too. I have a family that includes my wife, my son, my daughter, and I. Since Sparta did take

over our land, I am now considered a helot which is a state-owned enslaved non-spartan citizen

which means that I am to work for them and do what manual labor they put on me or to help

fight with them in battle. I am treated poorly, but they don’t realize what they are doing since

they are so accustomed to enslaving whatever men they come across when taking over the

territories. Although, there are quite a bit of downsides, I am glad that they have a good religion

that I am able to follow. They follow a polythesitic religion that includes Zues, the god of

thunder, and Hercules, one of the most famous mythical beings that is so well known even to this

day. Another thing that I am glad about is the fact that they are starting to give the women more

rights in their community such as owning their own property, having some authority with ruling,

making their own purchases, and just having the ability to actually think for themselves. This

may seem silly but for the time we live in it was very uncommon for women to have the ability

to do these types of things, so the fact that they were able to here was very encouraging. Whereas

for myself, I was assigned to a Spartan citizen and my job was to do the domestic work for them.

Other helots were either tasked with being farmers, domestic servants, or nurses depending on

their background or the need for the position. On the war side of things, it was my job as a helot

to be a shield barrier, for heavily armed troops, be and archer or slinger in some cases, and when

we become a navy power to our job would be to pilots or be a marine. As far as the living

conditions, we were placed on a farm that had a house to keep the few other families including
ourselves in it. It was extremely cramped because there were so many of us, but we were just

happy to have a roof over our heads.
