Though we may be solidly in the dog days of summer, the SMIIoT division is as busy September
as ever, which means that your favourite newsletter editor has been hard at work SMIIoT ISA Connect
putting together the information that you need to stay in the know for your favourite

ISA Automation & Leadership
So, where to start? How about with the biggest news, a full InTech magazine Conference
dedicated to the SMIIoT, written by the technical committees of the SMIIoT division!
This is the first time a division has been given a full issue, and while I may be biased, I
do believe we knocked it out of the park. On top of that, the SMIIoT division continues
to be one of the most active divisions in the society. We continue to deliver monthly
public meetings that discuss and dissect extremely hot topics within the industry and

Overall, the division continues to grow in all areas, which highlights just how important Ryan Kershaw
the SMIIoT topic is in the industry overall and the current high level of quality and
participation within the division. Not involved yet? Why not? If you’re worried about
not being an expert, don’t be. Yes, there are a few experts, but in a new field such as
this, there are more new people than experts and many of us are here to learn. So, if
you want to learn and be part of the best community out there, let us know.

 2022 SMIIoT Division Leadership Members

Thank you to all those who volunteer their time to help with the operation of the Division. For those that are unfamiliar
with the leadership structure of the division, it breaks down into two areas:

1. Division Leadership: This part of the division leadership slate deals with the operation and administration of the
division, handling leadership, marketing, membership, events and strategic topics. These volunteers ensure that
the division continues to operate smoothly and that there is a constant stream of new members and ideas coming
into the division.
2. Technical Committee Chairs: These volunteers are tasked with keeping tabs on their respective areas of
expertise. The committee chairs are responsible for setting the priorities of their committees and identifying areas
of interest to learn about and projects to work on.

Division News
New AI/ML, AR/VR, and Cloud and Edge Technical
Committee Leaders
The SMIIoT division is pleased to announce the
appointment of Ines Mechkane, Mario Ishikawa, and Ryan
Treece as the new chairs of the AI/ML, AR/VR, and Cloud
and Edge committees respectively.
Ines is an Associate Product Manager with IBM’s
Advanced Analytics & Edge/IOT Teams. She has worked to
optimize the operations for a major government client and
has worked to bring teams together to deliver projects on
time and in scope. Ines has a B.Eng in Petroleum and
Natural Gas Engineering and an M.Sc. in Petroleum
Engineering.
Mario comes into the AR/VR Technical Committee
as the CTO of PackIOT where he guides the development of
apps and systems that help packaging industries to improve
their efficiency and reduce scrap costs through an end-to-
end analytics system. Mario is based in Florianópolis, Brazil
and holds a Bachelors degree in Information systems and a
Technical Certificate in Electronics.
Ryan hails from Austin Texas where he is the
Business Development Manager – IIoT for Telit. Ryan has
spent most of the past decade tinkering with industrial
sensors and vision-based inspection systems on plant floors.
Ryan holds a BBA from Western Michigan University.
All of these new chairs bring a great deal of
industry expertise to their respective committees, and the
division is looking forward to seeing their committees
develop under their leadership.

Join a Technical Committee
Technical committees aren’t just for the experts!
Joining a technical committee involves helping to learn
more about the specific topic at hand and helping to
identify those in the industry that can help to bring their
expertise to articles and conferences. Get involved by

Help Out with an Event
The division and the society as a whole put on events
all the time and are always looking for volunteers to help
find speakers, develop the topics list, and to promote
the event. This is a great opportunity to meet other
members of the community and to learn more about the
topic of the event. Bonus, if you’re helping out with the
event, a free ticket is usually one of the perks! Get
involved by reaching out to either Mike Nager or Lalit
Bangera
Become a Leader in the Division
There’s always more than enough work to go around in
the division and we are always looking for help running
things. Help plan events, liaise with the local sections,
and just lend a hand in general. Get involved by

Be a Local Representative
Sections are looking for assistance, much like the
division is, and being a local representative can help
provide the section with information from the division,
speaking topics and news about the latest trends in the

ISA SMIIoT InTech Issue
The Smart Manufacturing & IIoT Division worked with the ISA
staff to create the first-ever “division lead” version of InTech
Magazine.
Write for the Division
Fancy yourself a wordsmith? A modern-day Shakespeare? If
so, you might be perfect for teaching the ISA community a bit
more about Industry 4.0 and Smart Manufacturing.
Piqued your interest, but dreading the inevitable research and
references that goes along with many industry-type papers?
Fear not, we have multiple options depending on your writing
level and how much time you would like to dedicate to an article.

ISA Connect is the formal home of the SMIIoT division
and ISA as a whole. This site is only accessible to
current ISA members, so it contains information that is
not available to the general public. Looking for the
latest events or information on the division? You have
come to the right place!
SMIIoT Library on ISA Connect
Just about all of the content on this site is developed
and maintained by the membership. The divisions
and sections are responsible for their own content
which is meant to keep their various members up to
date on what is happening. In this area, you can see
how the different divisions and sections operate and
who is part of each. Want to learn more about a

The Connect Live Event is a great opportunity to listen to experts talk about current technology and trends within the

Working on an Industry Maturity and
Readiness Guide that will help align various
external methods and provide a document
and checklist that ISA will distribute from
their standards department.

We need some end users for our committee
to add a voice that comes from the user end
of the spectrum and not just from the OEM’s,
resellers, integrators, VAR’s in the
committee currently.
How a small committee can have impact on
automation as well as a company’s digital
transformation, and diverse input is
