Sprocket and chain design

We choose the velocity ratio of 1, so using the table of standard number of teeth for sprocket our
sprocket has 31 teeth and also because of our velocity ratio the second sprocket has also 31 teeth. Our
desired velocity of the chain is 0.55m/s, from this we can calculate pitch of the chain (P),

V=TPN/60

We have V=0.55 m/s, T=31, N=105rpm there for;

0.55m/s = 31×P×105rmp/60

P=0.01013m =10.1mm

Standard is 9.5 & 12.70… So we chose 12.70mm

For pitch diameter we use V=πDN/60

V=0.55m/s

0.55m/s = πD ×105rpm/60

D=0.100040m=100.0403mm

Ѳ=360°/T

=360°/31

=11.6129°

To determine the length of the chain we use

L=K×P

K = number of chain links

P = pitch of the chain

To get K we use,

K = (T₁ + T₂)/2 + 2X/P + [(T₂ + T₁) / (2π)] ² - P/X, Where

X = center distance b/n two sprockets

X = 5160mm = 5.160m

T₁ = T₂ = 31

P = 10.13mm
K = (31 + 31) /2 + (2×5106mm)/10.13mm

K = 1049.75 ≈ 1050

Then the length of the chain will be,

L=K×P

= 1050 × 10.13mm

= 10,636.5mm

Based on pitch of the chain the ISO chain number will be 08B with width between inner plate (b₁)mm
max=7.75mm, roller diameter d₁=8.51mm, breaking load minimum = 31.1KN for duplex chains based on
the above information we calculate outer diameter of the sprocket using

D₀= D + 0.8d₁

D= 100mm+ 0.8 × 8.51mm

D= 106.808mm ≈ 107mm

Then to get the total load on the driving side we must calculate breaking strength of the chain and select
food factor of safety.

Wb = breaking strength of the chain

w= total load on the rotating side

F.S. = Wb/w

P= 12.20mm

Wb =106 × P²

=106 × (12.20)²

=17,096.74N

We choose mostly used factor of safety = 3

Then W = Wb/F.S. = 17,096.74N/3 = 5698.933N

The chain to work in good condition the load on the drive side must not exceed 5698.933N. Our
tangential driving force that acts on the chain is F T.

FT = P/V where,

P = power transmitted
V = speed of chain

P = (Wb × V) / (F.S. × Ks)

Ks = K₁×K₂×K₃ where,

Ks = service factor

K₁ = load factor

K₂= lubricating factor

K₃= rating factor

We use K₁= 1, for constant load

K₂=1.5, for periodic lubrication

K₃=1, for 8 hours/day

Ks = K₁×K₂×K₃

Ks=1×1.5×1=1.5

P = (Wb × V) / (F.S. × Ks)

= (17,096.74N×0.55m/s)/ (3×1.5)

=2,089.6W

FT = P/V= 2089.6/0.55

=3,799,276N

For bearing design

We chose deep groove ball bearing for small friction.

Our shaft diameter is 30mm

Rated bearing life (L₁₀h) = 12000

Our radial load = 3,799.276N

N= 105rpm

Load factor (L.F.) =1.1 then.

L₁₀ = L₁₀h × N× 60
=12000 × 105 × 60

=75.6 million ≈ 76M

The dynamic load is

C= F × (L₁₀/10⁶)1/k ×L.F., k =3 for ball bearing

C= 3,299.276N [(76×10⁶)/10⁶] 1/3×1.1

=3,799,276N×4.24×1.1

=17,719,823264N

So we select based on dynamic load our bearing will be

Bearing number 206

Bore diameter = 30mm

Outer diameter= 62mm

Width = 16mm

With C=19.5KN which is higher than our C because it can reduce friction and requires small amount of
force to move
