This document outlines notes from a course on metals and alloys taught by Dr. Farhan Javaid. It covers various topics relating to steelmaking processes including the classification of steelmaking, the principle of steelmaking, an overview of steelmaking, and details on basic oxygen furnace (BOF) processes. The notes provide information on the LD converter, its similarities to the Bessemer process, use of molten pig iron and steel scrap, and a refining time of 20-25 minutes.

Steel Making (BOF Processes) ✓ The LD converter, named after the Austrian towns Linz and Donawitz (a district of Leoben) is a refined version of the Bessemer converter where blowing of air is replaced with blowing oxygen.
✓ Like Bessemer process, Autogenous process
and need molten pig iron as a charge material
✓ Steel scrap is used as a coolant since excess
heat is available in these processes .
✓ Refining Time: 20 – 25 Min.
