Introduction The lab exercises contained in this guide will give you an
opportunity to reinforce the information that you are learning in the
EMC Avamar Installation and Configuration course. The lab
exercises are designed to be run in a test lab environment on the
Avamar test lab systems as described below. Some of the lab
exercises may make changes to the system. For this reason, do
NOT attempt to run the lab exercises on any production system.
You will be using a Virtual Data Center (VDC) environment to

Description: lab exercises.
At the start of the first lab, the instructor will provide each student
with a reference sheet containing host names, IP addresses,
login, and other information needed to complete the lab exercises.
Lab Exercise 3-1: Single Node Avamar Install
Purpose: In this lab you will perform Avamar Installation on a single node

Lab Exercise 3-1 Part 1: Install Operating System
Step Action
1 To access your system, open an Internet Explorer browser session from your
classroom laptop and enter the access URL (provided in your student handout).
Enter the Access Login and Password as indicated in your student handout and
click Login.
2 Click your Windows client (indicated in your student handout).
Step Action
3 Login to your system as administrator, password student.
4 Double-click the VMWare Virtual Infrastructure Client shortcut on the desktop.
Step Action
5 Login to the Virtual Infrastructure Client with the following information:
Server: <hostname of your VMware Virtual Center Server>

Username: <VMWare userid>
Password: <VMWare password>
6 Press the Inventory button and select Virtual Machines and Templates.
Step Action
7 Expand the tree on the left-hand pane until your single-node Avamar server
appears. Select your single-node Avamar server by clicking on the server name.
8 Close the Getting Started tab. The following screen appears:
In the left pane, select <your Avamar single node server> and click the Power On
Icon to turn the machine on.
Click the Open Console Icon to bring up the console.
Step Action
9 The system is setup to boot from the Avamar Red Hat Linux ISO image. The
installation menu options screen appears.
Enter a2 as the installation option.
Step Action
10 Wait for the installation to complete and the following screen to appear.
11 Hit Enter to reboot the system.

Lab Exercise 3-1 Part 2: Node Preparation
Step Action
1 In your console, the following window appears:
Note: You may have to hit enter in the window to cause the login prompt to appear.
Enter the following to logon to the system:

login: root
password: changeme
2 To configure network settings for this host, type (all on one command line):
/usr/sbin/netconfig --ip=<IP Address of your host>

--netmask=<Subnet> --hostname=<hostname> --domain=avamar.lan
--device=eth0 --gateway=<gateway>

3 To restart the network service, type:
service network restart
Step Action
4 To verify basic connectivity, type:
ping <IP Address of your host>

ping <IP address of your gateway>
ping <IP address of your DNS server>
ping <IP address of your secondary DNS server>
Validate that all four ping commands work.
Hit Ctrl^C to exit ping.
Step Action
5 Note: In the classroom environment, it sometimes takes an inordinately long time to
perform the time synchronization step when installing Avamar. This is due to the way
timer interrupts are simulated and handled by VMware. This solution involves
changes to the /boot/grub/grub.conf file. This step is to be performed in the
classroom only and NOT in a production environment.
To transfer the grub.conf file to the host, double click the WinSCP icon on your
desktop.
Result: The WinSCP Login screen appears.
Select root@<your hostname> and click Login.
Accept any warnings and proceed.
If prompted for a password, enter: changeme

6 The following screen appears:

7 On the left pane, navigate to
C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\My Documents
On the right pane, navigate to /boot/grub
8 Copy the grub.conf file from the Windows directory to the /boot/grub directory
on the server. When the following screen appears, select Copy.

9 Click Yes to overwrite the file.
10 Exit from the WinSCP session by closing the application.
11 Restart your host by typing:
reboot
Wait for the reboot to succeed.
Close the VMware console window and the VMware Virtual Infrastructure window.
You have now configured basic networking for your host so you can access this host
remotely using a program such as PuTTY.
Lab Exercise 3-1 Part 3: Configure Network Settings
Step Action
1 To transfer the Avamar software to the host, double-click the WinSCP shortcut on your
desktop.
Result: The WinSCP Login screen appears.
Select root@<your hostname> and click Login.
Accept any warnings and proceed.

3 On the left pane, navigate to the Z:\ drive.
On the right pane, navigate to /usr/local/avamar/src.
Copy the Avamar Software tar file to the /usr/local/avamar/src directory on the
server. The following screen appears:
Click Copy to copy the file.

Close the WinSCP session.

4 Open a PuTTY SSH session to your Avamar single node server by clicking the
PuTTY icon on your desktop.
Result: The following Window appears:
Select <your Avamar single node host> and click Load and Open.

5 Change directories by typing:
cd /usr/local/avamar/src
6 To extract dpnutils and dpnnetutil, type:
tar xzvf <name of tar file> RHEL4_64/{dpnutils,dpnnetutil}'*'
7 To install dpnutils and dpnnetutil, type:
rpm -ivh RHEL4_64/{dpnutils*,dpnnetutil*}.rpm

8 To create a temporary probe.out file, type:
su - admin
cd /usr/local/avamar/var
probesingle <IP address of your single node server>
9 To ensure that the single node server responds to the root user:
First, exit out of the admin user shell to return to the root shell, type:
exit
Then, from the root shell, type:
ssh-agent bash
ssh-add ~dpn/.ssh/dpnid
export SYSPROBEUSER=root
Type:
mapall --all date

10 To launch the network configuration utility, type:
dpnnetutil
Select Yes.
Enter/verify the IP address of your single node server. Hit <TAB> and select OK.

Enter the hostname of your single node server and click OK.
Note: Check the name of your hostname! It should not begin with "avamar".
Enter avamar.lan as the parent domain and click OK.
Step Action
Enter the <IP Address of your primary DNS Server> and select OK.
Enter the <IP Address of your secondary DNS Server> and select OK.
Step Action
Enter/verify the network mask and select OK.
Enter/verify the default network gateway and select OK.

Select Yes to accept the settings.

21 Type: tail -f /usr/local/avamar/var/log/dpnnetutil.log
Verify that no errors occurred.
Hit Ctrl-C to exit tail –f.
22 Type, exit to exit from the session.
Close your PuTTY window, if still open.

23 Add the checkfs-tweaks.pl file to the server. On your Windows desktop, click
the WinSCP icon.
Select admin@<your single node server> and click Login.

On the right pane, navigate to /data01/home/admin.

25 Copy the checkfs-tweaks.pl file. Select Copy to confirm copying the file.
Note: The checkfs.tweaks.pl file allows us to override the minimum LUN size
requirements of Avamar. This option is not supported in production environments
and is only used for lab or test systems.
26 Exit from the WinSCP session by closing the application.
Lab Exercise 3-1 Part 4: Server Software Installation and

Configuration
Step Action
1 Open an SSH connection to your host using PuTTY (Click the PuTTY icon on your
desktop).
Select <your single node server> and click Open. Accept any security warnings and
continue.
Login using the following values:
Login: root
Password: changeme
Step Action
2 Change directory to /usr/local/avamar/src by typing:
3 Extract the dpnavqinstall package. Type:

tar xzvf <Name of tar file> RHEL4_64/dpnavqinstall'*'.noarch.rpm
4 Install dpnavqinstall. Type:
rpm -ivh RHEL4_64/dpnavqinstall*.rpm
Step Action
5 Set up the install configuration file.
Edit the file, /usr/local/avamar/var/install.conf. Substitute the values

from your student handout sheet for the values after the equal sign.
Set the following values:
gsan_key_account_id=<Your customer number>
gsan_key_asset_reference_id=<Your asset number>
local_time_zone=<Your time zone>
time_servers=<time_server_1,time_server_2>
Note: Remember to remove the leading pound sign (#) from the above lines.
Specify both NTP servers separated by a comma. Do not use spaces to separate the
NTP server names.

6 Start the software installation by entering the command:
avqinstall
Step Action
7 To monitor the installation open a new PuTTY session and tail the
/usr/local/avamar/var/log/avqinstall.log file. Type:
tail –f /usr/local/avamar/var/log/avqinstall.log

8 From time to time messages will appear inviting you to tail another log file. Tail
these files to observe progress of individual tasks.

9 Wait until the original avqinstall command completes. Check for any error
messages.
Step Action
10 To get the status of the Avamar server, type:
dpnctl status
Note that the Scheduler status is down.
11 To start the scheduler, type:
dpnctl start sched

12 To verify the scheduler status, type:
dpnctl status
Lab Exercise 3-1 Part 5: Backup Configuration Files
Step Action
1 It is strongly recommended to backup all configuration files, to be used in case of a
utility node failure.
To do this, in the PuTTY session logged in as root open from the previous lab,
type:
cd /root
Step Action
2 To run the backup script, type:
/usr/local/avamar/bin/backup_upgrade_files
Note: The backup_upgrade_files script will return an error for backing up

replication information since replication is not setup on this server. It is safe to ignore
this error in this case.

3 Type:
cd /tmp
To view the backup directory, type:
ls
Note the name of the backup directory (It will be in the format “backups_date_time”)

6 To copy the file to your Windows host, launch WinSCP by clicking the WinSCP

Lab Exercise 3-2: Backup and Restore on a Single Node

Avamar Server
Purpose: In this lab you will perform a server-initiated backup and restore of
a client to/from your single node Avamar server.
In this lab you will perform:

Lab Exercise 3-2 Part 1: Install the Avamar Management

Console
Step Action
1 Start an Internet Explorer browser session from your assigned Windows host and
enter the following: http://<Your Avamar server host name>
Answer Yes to any Security Alerts and proceed to the next step.
2 Do not attempt to login.
Click the Documents and Downloads link at the bottom of the window.
Step Action
3 Under Downloads, click the appropriate operating system hyperlink for your client
computer.
For this lab, click the Microsoft Windows 2000, XP, 2003, Vista link under
Windows for x86 (32 bit).
Step Action
4 To install the Avamar management console application, click
AvamarConsoleMultiple-windows-<Version>.exe.
Step Action
5 Click Run to start the installation. Click Run to any Security Warnings.
6 Click Accept to accept the license terms.
Step Action
7 Click Install to accept the default value for the destination folder and install the
software.
8 Click No to decline viewing the release notes.
Step Action
9 The installation of the Avamar Console application is complete.
Lab Exercise 3-2 Part 2: Install the Avamar Client
Step Action
1 In the Internet Explorer browser window from the previous lab, to install the Avamar
client, click the AvamarClient-windows-<version>.msi link.
Step Action
2 Click Run. When the Security Warning displays, click Run.
3 Click Next.
Step Action
4 Accept the license agreement and click Next.
5 Click Next to accept the default value for the destination folder.
Step Action
6 Click Install to install the software.
7 Click Finish to complete the installation.
Lab Exercise 3-2 Part 3: Enable/Verify the Email Home Feature
Step Action
1 When fully configured and enabled, the “email home” feature automatically emails the
following information to EMC Technical Support twice daily:
• Status of the daily data integrity check
• Selected Avamar server warnings and information messages
• Any Avamar server errors
• Any RAID errors (single-node servers only)
To specify an SMTP server and a sender email address, you need to update the
mcserver.xml file located at /data01/avamar/var/mc/server_data/prefs
on the Avamar server.
Click the PuTTY icon on your desktop.
Select <your single node Avamar server> and click Open.
Login as user root and password changeme.
Step Action
2 Type:
cd /data01/avamar/var/mc/server_data/prefs
3 Type: ls
The mcserver.xml file is listed
4 Edit the file mcserver.xml.
Find the <node name =”mail”> entry.
For the smtpHost field, enter: <your email server>

For the admin_mail_sender_address field, enter: avamar@avamar.lan
Result:
Save the file and exit the editor program.
Step Action
5 Stop and re-start the Avamar MCS server software by entering the following
commands:
dpnctl stop mcs
dpnctl start mcs

6 To start the Avamar Administrator in Windows, click the Avamar Administrator
shortcut on the desktop or from the Windows Start menu.
Enter the following information:
User Name: MCUser

Password: MCUser1
Domain Name: /
Administrator Server: <Hostname of your Avamar Server>
Then, click Log On. Accept any JRE warnings.
Step Action
7 Click Administration.
8 Choose Tools > Manage Profiles from the menu bar.
Step Action
9 Create a copy of the existing High Priority Events profile by selecting it and clicking
Copy.
In the Save as field, enter: <Your Avamar Server Name>_HighProfileEvents. Click

OK.

10 Select your newly created profile and click Enable. Select Yes to confirm.
Result:

11 Select your newly created profile and click Edit. Click the Email Notification tab and
verify the Subject Header and Recipient Email List fields. Then, click Send Email.
Step Action
12 Click OK to dismiss the dialog stating the email was accepted.
13 Click OK to close the Edit Profile dialog.
14 Click OK to close the Manage Profiles dialog.
15 Choose Tools > Manage Schedules from the Avamar Administrator main menu.
Result: The following dialog appears:

16 Select the Notification Schedule and click Run Now.
17 Click OK to close the Manage All Schedules dialog.

18 Exit Avamar Administrator.
19 From the Windows Start menu, choose All Programs > Outlook Express.
Enter the password student and click OK.
20 You should receive one or more emails in your Inbox.
Click the Inbox and read and examine the email messages. These messages are the
type of messages that would be sent to EMC via the Email Home facility. EMC will
use these messages to monitor your Avamar servers.
When you are done examining the messages, quit Outlook Express.
Lab Exercise 3-2 Part 4: Licensing
Step Action
1 Open a PuTTY session to your single-node Avamar server.
Login as user admin with password changeme.
Step Action
2 Enable SSH by entering the following commands:
ssh-agent bash
ssh-add ~admin/.ssh/admin_key
When prompted enter the passphrase: P3t3rPan
3 Enter: gathergsankeydata
Answer the prompts by supplying your Account ID and Asset Reference ID.
Accept the default for Internet Domain (avamar.lan).
Note: The Account ID begins with “CN-“; the Asset Reference ID begins with “A-“.
If you entered the values correctly, answer y when prompted. Otherwise, answer n
and try again.
Step Action
4 Wait for the gathergsankeydata command to finish. Ignore the warnings that the
top-level domain is non-standard. Leave the PuTTY session active, you will need
it for a future step.
5 Open a WinSCP session and choose admin@<your single node Avamar server>.
Click Login. If prompted for a password, enter: changeme
Step Action
6 On the left pane, navigate to the C:\My Documents\single directory. On the
right pane, navigate to the admin user home directory (data01/home/admin), if
not already there.
Copy the license.xml file to data01/home/admin.
7 When prompted, click Copy. Close the WinSCP session after copying the file.
Step Action
8 Return to your PuTTY session. Enter the command dpnctl status gsan to see
if the Avamar gsan server is running. It must be running in order to install the
license file.
9 Change the permissions of the license.xml file. Type:
chmod 644 license.xml
10 To install the license file, type:
avmaint license license.xml --avamaronly
Step Action
11 Validate that the license was properly installed by issuing the command:
avmaint license --avamaronly
12 Close the PuTTY session.
Lab Exercise 3-2 Part 5: Perform a Server-Initiated Backup of

Data on the Avamar Client
Step Action
1 To start Avamar Administrator in Windows, click the Avamar Administrator
User Name: MCUser

Password: MCUser1
Domain Name: /
Administrator Server: <Hostname of your Avamar Server>
Step Action
2 The Avamar Administrator menu appears. Click Administration.
3 Right click clients in the left-hand pane and select New Client.
Step Action
4 Enter the following information
New Client Name: <Hostname of your client>

Contact: <Hostname of your client>
Click OK to add the client.
Click OK on the confirmation screen.
Step Action
5 Expand the client tree in the left pane and right-click your client. Select Invite
Client. Click OK.
6 Click Backup & Restore from the main Avamar Administrator screen. (Or select
Navigation > Backup and Restore from the menu bar.)
Select your client from the tree structure in the left pane.
In the right pane, select Browse for Files, Folders or Directories and select the
C:\WINDOWS\Fonts directory.
Step Action
7 Select Actions > Backup Now from the menu bar. Select OK to begin the backup.
Select OK to confirm.
Step Action
8 Monitor the progress of the backup by clicking Navigation > Activity from the
menu bar. Verify that the backup was successfully completed.
Lab Exercise 3-2 Part 6: Perform a Restore of Data Deleted from

the Avamar Client
Step Action
1 On your client machine, open Windows Explorer and navigate to
C:\WINDOWS\Fonts. Delete the ariblk.TTF file.
2 Launch Avamar Administrator. Click Backup & Restore.
Step Action
3 Expand the clients tree in the left pane and select your client.
Click the Select for Restore tab in the right pane.
Step Action
4 Select your backup and browse its contents. Select the ariblk.ttf file to restore.
Step Action

Lab Overview
This is a group lab exercise. In this lab, you will build a multi-node Avamar (1X4) RAIN
server. Your instructor will assign you to groups to perform the lab.
Lab Exercise 3-3 Part 1: Hosts Preparation and Network

Configuration
Step Action
1 To copy the Avamar software to the utility node, click the WinSCP icon on your
assigned Windows host’s desktop.
Select root@<your utility node> and click Login. Accept any warnings and
continue.
Step Action
2 On the left pane, navigate to the Z:\ drive.
On the right pane, navigate to /usr/local/avamar/src.
3 Copy the Avamar software file to /usr/local/avamar/src on the utility node.

Click Copy.
Step Action
4 After the file has been copied, exit from WinSCP.
5 To copy the checkfs-tweaks.pl file to your utility node, click the WinSCP icon on
your desktop.
Select admin@<utility node> and click Login. Accept any warnings and continue.

Settings\Administrator\My Documents folder.
On the right pane, navigate to /home/admin.

separated by a comma. Do not use spaces to separate the NTP server names.

Enter a2 as the installation option.

11 Hit Enter to reboot the system.

Enter the following to logon to the system:

Validate that all four ping commands work.
