Introduction The lab exercises contained in this guide will give you an
opportunity to reinforce the information that you are learning in the
EMC Avamar Installation and Configuration course. The lab
exercises are designed to be run in a test lab environment on the
Avamar test lab systems as described below. Some of the lab
exercises may make changes to the system. For this reason, do
NOT attempt to run the lab exercises on any production system.
Avamar Test Lab

Description:
Lab Exercise 3-1: Single Node Avamar Install
Purpose: In this lab you will perform Avamar Installation on a single node
In this lab you will perform:

Objectives: Basic hardware configuration
Install operating system
Node preparation
Configure network settings
Server software installation and configuration

Lab Exercise 3-1: Part 1: Install Operating System
Step Action
1 To access your system, open an internet explorer browser session from your classroom
laptop and enter the access URL ( Provided in your student handout)
2 Enter the Access Login and Password as indicated in your student handout and click Login
3 Click on your windows client ( Indicated in your student handout)
Login to your system as administrator, and password student
Double-click on the VMWare Virtual Infrastructure Client shortcut on the desktop
6 Login to the Virtual Infrastructure Client with the following information:
Server: <hostname of your VMware Virtual Center Server>

Username: <VMWare userid>
Password: <VMWare password>
7 The following screen appears:
In the left pane, select <your Avamar single node server> and click on the Power On Icon
to turn the machine on
Click on the Open Console Icon to bring up the console
8 The system is setup to boot from the Avamar Red Hat Linux iso image. The installation menu
options screen appears.
Enter a1 as the installation option
9 The installation process begins
Accept all warnings if any on deletion of data in devices sda and sdb
10 Wait for the installation to complete and the following screen to appear
11 Hit Enter to reboot the system
Lab Exercise 3-1 Part 2: Node Preparation
Step Action
1 In your console, the following window appears:
Note: You may have to hit enter in the window to cause the login prompt to appear.
Enter the following to logon to the system

login: root
password: changeme
2 To configure network settings for this host, type
/usr/sbin/netconfig --ip=<IP Address of your host> --netmask=<Subnet> --

hostname=<hostname> --domain=avamar.lan --device=eth0 --gateway=<gateway>
3 To restart the network service, type
service network restart
4 To verify basic connectivity, type
ping <IP Address of your host>

ping <IP address of your gateway>
ping <IP address of your DNS server>
Validate that all three ping commands work.
Hit Ctrl^C to exit ping
5 Restart your host by typing,
reboot
Wait for reboot to succeed.

Close VMware console window and the VMware Virtual Infrastructure window.
You have now configured your basic networking for your host so you can access this host
remotely using a program such as putty
Lab Exercise 3-1 Part 3: Configure Network Settings
Step Action
1 To transfer the Avamar software to the host, double-click on the WinSCP shortcut on your
desktop. The WinSCP Login screen appears.
Select root@<your hostname> and click Login
Accept any warnings and proceed
If prompted for a password, enter changeme
3 On the left pane, navigate to the Z:\ drive
On the right pane, navigate to /usr/local/avamar/src
Copy the Avamar Software tar file to the /usr/local/avamar/src directory on the server. The
following screen appears:
Click Copy to copy the file.

Close the WinSCP session.
4 Open an Putty SSH session to your Avamar Single Node system, by clicking on the Putty
Icon on your desktop
The following Window appears:
5 Select <your Avamar single node host> and click Load and Open
login: root
password: changeme
6 Change directories by typing,
cd /usr/local/avamar/src
7 Type,
tar xzvf <name of the Avamar software tar file> RHEL4_64/ {dpnutils,dpnnetutil}'*'
Type,
rpm -ivh RHEL4_64/{dpnutils*,dpnnetutil*}.rpm
8 To create a temporary probe.out file, type
su - admin
cd /usr/local/avamar/var
probesingle <IP address of your single node server>
9 To ensure that the single node server responds to the root user,
First, exit out of the admin user shell to return to the root shell, type
exit
From the root shell type,
ssh-agent bash
ssh-add ~dpn/.ssh/dpnid
export SYSPROBEUSER=root
Type,
mapall --all date
10 To launch the network configuration utility, type
dpnnetutil
Select Yes
Enter/Verify the IP address of your single node system and hit <TAB> and select OK
Enter the hostname of your single node system and click OK
Note: Please check the name of your hostname! It should not begin with "avamar".
Enter avamar.lan as the parent domain and click OK
Enter the <IP Address of your primary DNS Server> and select OK
Enter the <IP Address of your secondary DNS Server> and select OK
Enter/Verify the network mask and select OK
Enter/Verify the default network gateway and select OK
Select Yes to accept the settings
Select OK
21 Type, tail -f /usr/local/avamar/var/log/dpnnetutil.log
Verify no errors occurred
Hit Ctrl-C to exit tail-f
22 Type, exit to exit out of your session
Close your Putty window if still open
23 To update the hosts file on the server, on your windows desktop, click on the WinSCP icon
Select root@<your single node server> and click Login
24 On the left pane, navigate to

C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\My Documents
On the Right Pane, navigate to

/etc/
25 Copy the hosts file and accept the option to overwrite
26 Exit out of the WinSCP session by closing the application
27 To add the checkfs-tweaks.pl file on the server, on your windows desktop, click on the
WinSCP icon
Select admin@<your single node server> and click Login


/data01/home/admin
29 Copy the checkfs-tweaks.pl file

Select Copy to confirm copying the file
Note: The checkfs.tweaks.pl file allows us to override the minimum lun size requirements of
Avamar. This option is not supported in production environments and is only used for lab or
test systems.
30 Exit out of the WinSCP session by closing the application
Lab Exercise 3-1 Part 5: Server software installation and

configuration
Step Action
1 Open an SSH connection to your host using putty ( Click on the putty icon on your desktop)
Select <your single node server> and click Open. Accept any security warnings and
continue.
2 Login using the following values:
Login: root
password: changeme
The following screen appears:
3 Change directories to the /usr/local/avamar/src by typing
cd /usr/local/avamar/src
Next type,
tar xzvf <Name of the Avamar Software tar file> 'RHEL4_64/dpnavwinstall*.rpm'
4 Next type,
rpm -ivh RHEL4_64/dpnavw*.rpm
Following installation of this RPM, you are prompted to open your web browser and point it to
a specific URL.
5 Launch internet explorer from your windows host, and point it to the URL listed in the previous
step
https://<Your avamar server host name>:1234
Accept the security warnings if any and proceed
6 The Log In - Authorized Users Only page appears.

Enter the Avamar server root password 8RttoTriz and click Log In
7 The avw_install VERSION page appears.

Click Start
8 The Check for System Activity page appears.

Click Check for System Activity
9 Click TASK LOG to monitor progress or review results of this task.
10 Verify successful result, then close the task log window and proceed to the next step, by
clicking check/restart atd service
11 Click Select Avamar Software Release
12 Click Unpack and Install
14 Verify successful result, then close the task log window and proceed to the next step by
clicking Enumerate Avamar Member Nodes
15 Click Verify Utility Node addresses

Lab Exercise 3-1 Part 6: Backup Configuration Files
Step Action
1 It is strongly recommended to backup all configuration files, to be used in case of a Utility
node failure.
To do this, in the ssh-putty session logged in as root you have open from your previous lab,
type
cd /root
2 To run the backup script, type
/usr/local/avamar/bin/backup_upgrade_files
Note: The backup_upgrade _files script will return an error for backing up replication
information, since replication is not setup on this system. It is safe to ignore this error in this
case.
3 Type,
cd /tmp
To view the backup directory, type,
ls
Note the name of the backup directory (It will be in the format “backups_DATE_TIME”)
File Name: __________________________
4 Type,
tar czvf <the name of your backup directory>.tgz <the name of your backup directory>/
5 Type,
ls
6 To copy the file to your windows host, launch WinSCP by clicking the WinSCP icon on your
assigned Windows machine’s desktop.
Select root@<your single node server> and click Login


/tmp
8 Copy the <backup_date_time>.tgz file
Select Copy to confirm copying the file
9 Close your WinSCP session.
Lab Exercise 3-2: Backups and Restores on a Single

Node Avamar Server
Purpose: In this lab you will perform a server initiated Backups and restores
of a client to/from your single node Avamar server
In this lab you will perform:

console
Step Action
1 Start an internet explorer browser session from your assigned windows host and enter the
following: http://<Your Avamar server host name>
Do not attempt to login; proceed to next page
Accept any warnings and proceed. The following screen appears:
2 Click on the Documents and Downloads link at the bottom of the page
The following screen appears:
3 Under windows, click on the NT,2000,XP, 2003 (32 bit) link. The following screen appears:
4 To install the Avamar management console application,

click Avamar Console-<Version>.windows.exe. The following screen appears:
Select Run. The following warning appears:
Select Run
6 Select Next. The following screen appears:
7 Accept the license agreement (click Yes). The following screen appears:
8 Click Next. The following screen appears:
10 Click Finish to complete the installation.
Lab Exercise 3-2 Part 2: Install the Avamar client
Step Action
1 In the internet explorer browser window from the previous lab, to install the Avamar client
click on the AvamarClient-<version>.windows.exe link.
2 The following window appears:
Select Run. The following warning appears:
Select Run
4 Select Next. The following screen appears:
5 Accept the license agreement (click Yes). The following screen appears:
Click OK
9 Click Finish to complete the client installation.
Lab Exercise 3-2 Part 3: Enable/Verify the “Email Home” feature
Step Action
1 When fully configured and enabled, the “email home” feature automatically emails the
following information to EMC Technical Support twice daily:
• Status of the daily data integrity check
• Selected Avamar server warnings and information messages
• Any Avamar server errors
• Any RAID errors (single-node servers only)
To specify an SMTP server and a sender email address, you need to update the
mcserver.xml file located at /data01/avamar/var/mc/server_data/prefs on the
Avamar system
Click on the Putty icon on your desktop
Select <your single node Avamar system> and click Open
2 Login as user root and password changeme
3 Type
cd /data01/Avamar/var/mc/server_data/prefs
4 Type ls
The mcserver.xml file is listed
5 Edit the file using vi to update the Email server and sender email address fields
Type, vi mcserver.xml
Find the <node name =”mail”> entry
For the smtpHost field enter a value of emailserver1.mycompany.com

For the admin_mail_sender_address field enter a value of admin@mycompany.com
Save the file and exit the vi program
6 To start the Avamar Administrator in windows, click the Avamar Administrator shortcut on the
desktop or from the windows Start menu.
Enter the following information
User Name: MCUser

Password: MCUser1
Domain Name: /
Administrator Server: <Hostname of your Avamar Server>
Click Log On. Accept any JRE warnings
8 Click Administration. The following screen appears:
9 Choose Tools Æ Manage Profiles
The Manage All Profiles dialog box appears.
10 Create a copy of the existing High Priority Events profile by select it and clicking Copy.
The Save As Dialog box appears.
In the Save as field enter: <Your Avamar Server Name>_HighProfileEvents
Click OK.
11 Select your newly created profile and select Enable.
Select Yes to confirm.
12 Select your newly created profile and select Edit.

Click on the "Email Notification" tab
Verify the Subject Header and Recipient Email list fields and click OK
13 The Email Home feature is now configured.
Note: In this lab setup, we do not have an email server. Therefore the Email home feature will
not work. In production, if the SMTP server name, sender email address and recipient email
address are setup as described in the steps above, the Email home feature will be functional.
Lab Exercise 3-2 Part 4: Perform a Server initiated backup of

data on the Avamar client
Step Action
User Name: MCUser

Password: MCUser1
Domain Name: /
Administrator Server: <Hostname of your Avamar Server>
Click Log On. Accept any JRE warnings.
2 The Avamar Administrator Main Menu appears.
Click Administration
4 Right Click on Clients and select New Client
5 Enter the Following information
New Client Name: <Hostname of your client>

Contact: <Hostname of your client>
Click OK, to add the client
Click OK on the confirmation screen
6 Right click on your client in the left pane and select Invite Client
Click OK
7 Click on Backup and Restore from the Main Menu
Select your client from the Clients drop down.

In the right pane, select Browse for Files, Folders or Directories and select the
C:\WINDOWS\Fonts directory
8 Select ActionsÆBackup Now
Select OK to begin Backup
Select OK
9 Monitor the progress of the Backup, by clicking on Activity from the Main Menu and verify
that the Backup was successfully completed
Lab Exercise 3-2 Part 5: Perform a Restore of data that was

deleted from the Avamar client
Step Action
1 On your client machine, open windows Explorer and navigate to C:\windows\fonts
Delete the ariblk.TTF file
2 Launch the Avamar Administrator Main Menu window
Click Backup and Restore

Expand the Clients tab in the left pane and select your client.
Click the Select for Restore tab in the right pane.
4 Select your backup and Browse its contents and select the ariblk.ttf
5 Select ActionsÆRestore Now
Select OK to begin restore
Click OK
that the restore was successfully completed
7 Verify that the ariblk.TTF file was restored by checking the contents of the
C:\windows\fonts folder on your client
8 In this class, we will use the same windows client for the multi node install. So you must
delete the client from the single node server before activating it with your multi node system
To do this, click Administration from the Main Menu
9 Right click on your client and select Delete
Select Yes to delete your client
10 The confirmation window appears. Select Yes to delete your client
Click OK and exit out of the Avamar Administration application

Lab Overview
This is a group LAB exercise. In this lab, you will build a multi-node Avamar (1X4) RAIN
system. Your instructor will assign you to groups to perform this LAB
Lab Exercise 3-3 Part 1: Hosts Preparation and Network

Configuration
Step Action
1 To copy the Avamar software to the Utility node, click on the WinSCP icon on your assigned
windows host’s desktop
Select root@<your utility node> and click Login. Accept any warnings and continue
2 On the Left pane, navigate to the Z:\ drive
On the right pane, navigate to /usr/local/avamar/src
3 Copy the Avamar software file to /usr/local/avamar/src on the utility node
Click Copy
4 After the file has been copied, exit out of the WinSCP application
5 To copy the checkfs-tweaks.pl file to your utility node, click on the WinSCP icon on your
desktop
Select admin@<utility node> and click Login. Accept any warnings and continue.
6 On the Left pane, navigate to the C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\My

Documents folder
On the right pane, navigate to /home/admin
7 Copy the checkfs-tweaks.pl file to the /home/admin folder on the utility node
click Copy
8 After the file has been copied, exit the WinSCP application
9 Click on the Putty icon on your desktop
Select <your utility node> and click Open
10 Login as root, and password changeme
11 Type cd /usr/local/avamar/src
12 Type tar xzvf <Avamar software file name> RHEL4_64/{dpnutils,dpnnetutil}’*’

Lab Exercise 3-1: Single Node Avamar Install

In this lab you will perform:

3 Click on your windows client ( Indicated in your student handout)

Login to your system as administrator, and password student

Double-click on the VMWare Virtual Infrastructure Client shortcut on the desktop

6 Login to the Virtual Infrastructure Client with the following information:

Server: <hostname of your VMware Virtual Center Server>

7 The following screen appears:

to turn the machine on

Click on the Open Console Icon to bring up the console

Enter a1 as the installation option

9 The installation process begins

11 Hit Enter to reboot the system

Lab Exercise 3-1 Part 2: Node Preparation

Enter the following to logon to the system

2 To configure network settings for this host, type

/usr/sbin/netconfig --ip=<IP Address of your host> --netmask=<Subnet> --

3 To restart the network service, type

service network restart

4 To verify basic connectivity, type

ping <IP Address of your host>

Validate that all three ping commands work.

Hit Ctrl^C to exit ping

5 Restart your host by typing,

Wait for reboot to succeed.

Lab Exercise 3-1 Part 3: Configure Network Settings

Select root@<your hostname> and click Login
