Introduction The lab exercises contained in this guide will give you an
opportunity to reinforce the information that you are learning in the
EMC Avamar Installation and Configuration course. The lab
exercises are designed to be run in a test lab environment on the
Avamar test lab systems as described below. Some of the lab
exercises may make changes to the system. For this reason, do
NOT attempt to run the lab exercises on any production system.

Lab Exercise 3-1: Part 1: Install Operating System

Step Action
1 To access your system, open an internet explorer browser session from your classroom
laptop and enter the access URL ( Provided in your student handout)

2 Enter the Access Login and Password as indicated in your student handout and click Login

3 Click on your windows client ( Indicated in your student handout)

Login to your system as administrator, and password student

Double-click on the VMWare Virtual Infrastructure Client shortcut on the desktop

6 Login to the Virtual Infrastructure Client with the following information:

Server: <hostname of your VMware Virtual Center Server>


Username: <VMWare userid>
Password: <VMWare password>

7 The following screen appears:

In the left pane, select <your Avamar single node server> and click on the Power On Icon

to turn the machine on

Click on the Open Console Icon to bring up the console

8 The system is setup to boot from the Avamar Red Hat Linux iso image. The installation menu
options screen appears.

9 The installation process begins

Accept all warnings if any on deletion of data in devices sda and sdb

10 Wait for the installation to complete and the following screen to appear

Step Action
1 In your console, the following window appears:

Note: You may have to hit enter in the window to cause the login prompt to appear.

Enter the following to logon to the system


login: root
password: changeme

2 To configure network settings for this host, type

/usr/sbin/netconfig --ip=<IP Address of your host> --netmask=<Subnet> --


hostname=<hostname> --domain=avamar.lan --device=eth0 --gateway=<gateway>

3 To restart the network service, type

service network restart

4 To verify basic connectivity, type

ping <IP Address of your host>


ping <IP address of your gateway>
ping <IP address of your DNS server>

Validate that all three ping commands work.

Hit Ctrl^C to exit ping

5 Restart your host by typing,

reboot

Wait for reboot to succeed.


Close VMware console window and the VMware Virtual Infrastructure window.
You have now configured your basic networking for your host so you can access this host
remotely using a program such as putty

Step Action
1 To transfer the Avamar software to the host, double-click on the WinSCP shortcut on your
desktop. The WinSCP Login screen appears.

Select root@<your hostname> and click Login

Accept any warnings and proceed

If prompted for a password, enter changeme

On the right pane, navigate to /usr/local/avamar/src

Copy the Avamar Software tar file to the /usr/local/avamar/src directory on the server. The
following screen appears:

Click Copy to copy the file.


Close the WinSCP session.

4 Open an Putty SSH session to your Avamar Single Node system, by clicking on the Putty
Icon on your desktop

5 Select <your Avamar single node host> and click Load and Open

6 Change directories by typing,

cd /usr/local/avamar/src

tar xzvf <name of the Avamar software tar file> RHEL4_64/ {dpnutils,dpnnetutil}'*'

Type,

rpm -ivh RHEL4_64/{dpnutils*,dpnnetutil*}.rpm

8 To create a temporary probe.out file, type

su - admin
cd /usr/local/avamar/var
probesingle <IP address of your single node server>

9 To ensure that the single node server responds to the root user,

First, exit out of the admin user shell to return to the root shell, type

exit

From the root shell type,

ssh-agent bash
ssh-add ~dpn/.ssh/dpnid
export SYSPROBEUSER=root

Type,

mapall --all date

10 To launch the network configuration utility, type

dpnnetutil

Select Yes

Enter/Verify the IP address of your single node system and hit <TAB> and select OK

Note: Please check the name of your hostname! It should not begin with "avamar".

Select Copy to confirm copying the file

Note: The checkfs.tweaks.pl file allows us to override the minimum lun size requirements of
Avamar. This option is not supported in production environments and is only used for lab or
test systems.

1 Open an SSH connection to your host using putty ( Click on the putty icon on your desktop)

Following installation of this RPM, you are prompted to open your web browser and point it to
a specific URL.

5 Launch internet explorer from your windows host, and point it to the URL listed in the previous
step

https://<Your avamar server host name>:1234

Accept the security warnings if any and proceed

6 The Log In - Authorized Users Only page appears.


Enter the Avamar server root password 8RttoTriz and click Log In

1 To copy the Avamar software to the Utility node, click on the WinSCP icon on your assigned
windows host’s desktop

Select root@<your utility node> and click Login. Accept any warnings and continue

If prompted for a password, enter changeme

2 On the Left pane, navigate to the Z:\ drive

On the right pane, navigate to /usr/local/avamar/src

3 Copy the Avamar software file to /usr/local/avamar/src on the utility node

5 To copy the checkfs-tweaks.pl file to your utility node, click on the WinSCP icon on your
