English is an international language that is widely used in almost every country when

communicating. Some countries that make English their official language are the United States,
Canada, Australia, Ireland and New Zealand. It is estimated that there are one third of the world's
population or 2 billion people who use English as their daily language. If drawn from its history,
English has been used since the days of Ancient Rome. At that time, society needed a language
that was easily understood so that people from various countries could understand when
communicating with each other. England was known as one of the colonial countries in the world.
England is known to have colonized more than 10 countries, including Indonesia. It was through
this colonization that indirectly English also spread and many people in British-colonized
countries began to learn it. As a result, colonized countries had to use English to communicate.
In fact, several colonial countries made English their official language. Besides being easy to
understand, English is also quite easy to learn. English already has a large vocabulary that
continues to grow every year, around 8,500 words per year. Therefore, many people communicate
using English, and it is even used as one of the subjects at school. Currently, it is estimated that
English has been taught as a foreign language in more than 100 countries, such as China, Russia,
Germany, Spain, Indonesia, Egypt, and Brazil. Some of the reasons why English should be learned
are to meet the needs of business and commerce, education, academics, culture, and politics.
