LECTURE-2

Q1. Look at the AQI value for any five cities (Including any city from Bangladesh) today and write it
down with health message.

Different cities have different AQI value around the world. Here’s a table below with different AQI value
of few renowned cities:

AQI Value of Different Cities

City Local Time Numerical AQI Health Concern Message
Rangpur 11.15 pm 120 Unhealthy for People with
(Bangladesh) sensitive groups sensitive health
concern may suffer
in this environment.

Toronto (Canada) 11.17 pm 12 Good Suitable to breath in

this environment.

Delhi (India) 11.19 pm 161 Unhealthy People may

experience health
issues in this
environment.
Tokyo (Japan) 11.20 pm 37 Good Suitable atmosphere
for living a healthy
life.

New York (USA) 11.22 pm 48 Good Healthy

environment for
living.

Q2. Calculate the density of water in volumetric flask at room temperature.

Weight of the empty 500 ml volumetric flask is: 60.56 gm

Weight of the 500ml volumetric flask with water is: 160.17 gm

As we all know, v= m/d

Here, m= (160.17- 60.56) gm

= 99.61 gm

V= 100 ml

So, density (d)= m/v

= 99.61 gm/ 100 ml

Therefore, d = 0.9961 gm/ml (Ans.)

Q3. The approximate value of water in the world’s ocean is 1.335x10^24 cubic cm. Assume that this is
the same temperature of your room-temperature. Now calculate the mass of this world’s ocean
water. (Adiba Fairuz Prome- 1712792030)

Here given that,

v= 1.335x10^24 cubic cm

d= 0.9961 gm/ cubic cm (From Q2)

As we all know, Density (d)= mass/ volume

Therefore, Mass= density x volume

m=dxv

= 0.9961 gm/ cubic cm x 1.335x10^24 cubic cm

So, mass = 1.329x10^24 gm

Q4. Now using the mass you obtained in Q3 and the known density of water at 36⁰ C (0.9937 g/cm^3),
compute the volume of that mass of ocean water. (Adiba Fairuz Prome- 1712792030)

Here given that,

d= 0.9937 g/ cm^3

m= 1.329x10^24 gm (From Q3)

Therefore, v= m/d

= 1.329x10^24 gm/ 0.9937 g/ cm^3

So, volume= 1.337x10^24 cm^3

Q5. Estimate the sea- level rise that would result from the temperature increase from room
temperature to 36⁰ C. Express the result in both meter and feet.

As we all know, v= l x w x h

Here, surface, s= (l x w) = 3.61x10^18 cm^2

Volume at room temperature, v1 = 1.335x10^24 cm^3 (Given)

Therefore, v1= l x w x h1

V1= s x h1

h1= v1/ s

h1= 1.335x10^24 cm^3/ 3.61x10^18 cm^2

h1= 3.698x10^41 cm

Again, Volume at 36⁰ C, v2= 1.337x10^24 cm^3 (From Q4)

Surface, s= (l x w) = 3.61x10^18 cm^2

Therefore, v2= l x w x h2

v2= s x h2

h2= v2/ s

h2= 1.337x10^24 cm^3/ 3.61x10^18 cm^2

h2= 3.704x10^41 cm

Therefore, H= (h2-h1)

H= (3.704x10^41 cm - 3.698x10^41 cm)

H= 6x10^38 cm

H= (6x10^38/ 100) = 6x10^36 meter, (6x10^36 x 3.28) = 1.968x10^37 feet

Q6. A) Write down five major impacts of sea level rise in Bangladesh. B) Describe any three
management strategies that are practiced in Bangladesh to deal with this issue.

a) Sea level rise has a major impact on Bangladesh and they are-

1. It creates a stress on coastal ecosystems.

2. It creates river bank erosion.
3. It creates destruction to fisheries.
4. It creates flood.
5. Biodiversity is hampered due to this.

b) Bangladesh has adapted many strategies to deal with this situation:

1. Building flood barriers to protect the impacts of sea level rise.

2. Planting marsh plants in shorelines to lessen the impact.

3. Relocating facilities to higher elevations.
