Minster, NAZAA, ARRL. Chief Executive Officer naa @arr org Second Century Here Comes Cycle 25! I was licensed in 1977, and what luck from a propagation perspective. With a modest station, running only 40 W and a homebrew vertical on the roof, was able to break a pileup for Chatham Island in the Pacific — on 10 meters! This experience pales to that of Solar Cycle 19, which peaked from 1957 to 1959. The sunspots were so active that ionization levels never fully diminished during darkness, so propagation on the high bands was occurring 24 hours a day, worldwide! Even 6-meter DX around the world was routine. Relatively new hams will read this and say “What?” because their uck wasn't s0 good coming into the hobby atthe end of Solar Cycle 24. But that 10-meter band you've been thinking was a dud is about to explodel Here ‘comes Solar Cyc'e 25! And some ofthe latest forecasts from scientists and space weather experts have us hoping foran epic event. A theory related to the actual terminator ‘of each solar cycle, and the measured time between ‘cles, states that a long period between cycies leads to lower sunspot levels, but a short period leads to much higher sunspot levels for the next cycle. If that theory Proves to be true, Solar Cycle 25 could be gangbusters! Let’ look at some correlation between the solar cycle and 10-meter activity The chart below graphs the total number cof 10-meter contacts made by the top US mut-mult con- test stations during the CQ World Wide contests going back o the end of Solar Cycle 23. | used CQWW data because CQWW is a “world works the world” contest, and activity on 10 meters during those contests should theo- retically represent peak efforts. Other than a drop in the 2012 CW contest that may be atributed to a geomagnetic cisturbance, you'l see thatthe total CSOs track pretty consistently with how the sunspots are affecting ionization at that t me in the cycle. Solar Cyto 24 0-Maker Ban Analysis 1 080: (07 08 0910111213 "14 75-16-17 18 "19 20 —caww ssa —comwcw sunspots Interestingly it shows us what the science has also told us: new Solar Cycle 25 sunspots began to show up in Nover- ber 2019, and we are now starting to see an uptick! ‘There is stil much we do not know or understand about how the solar cycle works. Despite sunspots being tracked by hand for hundreds of years, many theories — not facts, — still abound. We've had satelites giving us better imag- ing and data for the last four solar cycles, which is only a beginning. For ham radio operators, the new solar cycle is. ‘more than just an exciting time for operating. I's an oppor- tunity to use our tools, many of them new and evolving, to better understand radio propagation. So, how can you get involved? [ARAL will begin showing you how this month with a series of articles in On the Airmagazine, on the various aspects ofthe solar cycle, and QST will follow suit next month. In the months to come, the magazines will also be offering wide-ranging actives you can under- take to further our under- standing and contribution, ‘much in the way we have developed an understanding about greyline propagation, as well as the effects during a ‘solar eclipse. You'll recognize these articles from the “Cycle 25" logo (above) that we wil willbe using to brand the content! ‘So, here it comes! We are extremely excited! As always, get onthe air. Every summer, his best buddy would ship out with his family to their cabin in the northern part of the state, Pat and his friend wanted to stay in touch during these times, but it ‘seemed the only solution would be for both to buy Citizens Band radios. Pat's friend had a neighbor who seemed 10 ‘own a lot of radio gear, so they decided to visit and get his advice ‘about which radio they should pur- chase, Both boys were 11 years old at the time. ‘As Pat described the meeting: Jack Evans, K8DGK, must have been a poker player, because he didn't crack a smile as he led us downstairs to what turned out to be his amateur radio station. Before offering his purchasing advice, he picked up a microphone and made acallon 10-meter AM, making sure to point out that he wasnt using a CB rig. Within a minute, Jack was speaking with another Station in Puerto Roo. This was. Clearly something way beyond ord- nary CB. | was astonished! ‘After Jack's impromptu introduc- tion to amateur radio, | started showing up on his doorstep every {day when he got home trom work ‘and he patienily taught me about electronics, antennas, and radio. | got one of the frst 2-year Novice licenses (they had been 1-year up to that point) in 1967 and became WN8YVR. The Contest Bug Pat fll in love with contest operating ile stilin high school. As he described the moment, “One day, | tuned around atter participating in an £80-meter GW traffic net and I discov- ‘ered an ARRL Communications Department CD’ contest taking place. After listening for a while, knew I had found my next passion” Pati also a contest station builder. His four-tower station in Montana is the third mult-tower station he has built and owned, The NCJ Years Pat took the helm as the editor of the ‘National Contest Journal (NCJ) from 2015 through 2017. "It was an unex- pected opportunity to get to know the ‘owners of many of the cal signs in my contest logs” he said. "I also had an excellent relationship with the folks behind the scenes at ARRL who edit, lay out, publish, and distribute NCJ. They were wonderful to work with. My batting average for asking folks out of the blue to turn their thoughts into arti- les for the magazine was very high. There were no ‘cold calls"to authors because we all knew each other” During his tenure as NCJ editor, Pat ‘made ithis goal to communicate the ‘message that contests are fun. He also used the magazine as a platform to pay homage to amateurs who advanced the growing popularity of radiosport. Now that NCJis available to many more hams as an ARAL membership benefit, Pat thinks the future of the magazine is bright. “Under the new editorial leadership of Lee Finkel, KY7M, | think NCJ will continue to be a must read” he sald Life Beyond Amateur Radio Pat has spent his career as an econo- ‘mist, both in the public and private sectors. Since moving to Montana in 2007, he has worked as director of a medium-sized, university-based research center, at is married with two adult children and four grandchildren, al iving in the Chicago area, Thoughts on the Future of Amateur Radio Pat believes that while amateur radio inthe US remains reasonably robust at present, its futuro is uncertain, He said, “The vast major of our engaged amateurs are among the retired or near-retired population. People are living alot lnger these days, and middle-aged and older poo- ple are rediscovering radio as an inter- eating activity” However, Pat said the days of middle and high school kids taking up the hobby in the numbers that his genera- tion experienced are behind us. Pat feels that radiosport may be part Of the formula to alter this trajectory. He explained, “Sports and tourna- ‘ments are fun — just look at electronic gamers to see this. And in places like eastern Europe, young people have embraced everything from high-speed ‘code competitions to radio foxhunting events, We need to better communi- ‘ate the enjoyment and competitive challenge amateur radio can provide to young and old. The alternative is to just sit back and accept our fate.” March 2021 13, ARRL’s mission: To advance the art, science, and enjoyment of amateur radio.
