Your IELTS writing, particularly the IELTS Writing Task 2 Essay, should contain linking words

and phrases. When it comes to your coherence and cohesion score, which accounts for 25%
of your writing grade, using connecting words effectively may really make a difference.

What are Linking words?

First, the term “connecting words” refers to both words and sentences. There are phrases
like “as a result,” as well as single words like “although.” Second, connecting words might
be conjunctions that you employ in the midst of a phrase, such as “and” or
“because.” Adverbs like “consequently” or “on the other hand,” which are often used at
the beginning of a new phrase, can also function as linking words.

What do linking words do?

The answer to this crucial query is straightforward: connecting words helps your reader
understand what you’ve written. I’m done now. There isn’t any other justification for joining
terms. Recall this since it relates to many of the linking word issues that IELTS test takers
encounter. Avoid using connecting terms because you want to seem intellectual, wow the
examiner, or because you believe it will help you receive higher grades. To achieve better
grades, you must employ linking words, but you must do so correctly. In order to make the
organization of your ideas more evident, you employ connecting terms.

Similar concepts can be connected by using linking words. Call this the “addition” for now.
“And” is a fairly straightforward example. ‘Furthermore,’ ‘in addition,’ ‘also,’ or
moreover are also acceptable words. Linking words like “because,” “due to,” “in order to,”
or “so that” can be used to indicate a reason or purpose for anything. To link a cause and
effect, you can use connecting verbs like “hence,” “so,” “consequently,” or “as a
consequence.” Although there are others, this is a nice place to start. Keep in mind the
following four purposes: contrast, addition, reason or purpose, and cause-and-effect.
Let’s have a look at the 4 different sentences with linking devices:

Reason- In my personal experience, people certainly spend less time reading books than in
the past. I think this is due to the variety of digital entertainment options that people have
nowadays.

Adding information – Eating a high-sugar diet has been linked to several serious diseases,
most prominently diabetes. Moreover, it causes tooth decay and dental problems.

Contrast – Although advertising is ubiquitous in the modern world, it is also largely

ineffective.

Cause-effect – Many schools now spend most of their teaching time preparing children to
pass exams. As a result, many young people lack the practical skills which employers are
seeking.
