Unit 5: Education in the UNITED STATES

The following information contains some basic information to expand


on, and understand:

 The educational system in the United States

In the US, the school calendar begins in August or September and continues through
to May or June. The majority of students begin school in autumn. The academic year
is composed of three terms also known as semesters. The first semester is from
September to December followed by a short holiday break between semesters. The
second semester is from January to May. The last semester is a summer holiday break.
Post-secondary students can be on summer break from June to August.

The US education system consists of 12 years of elementary and secondary education


before students can advance to post-secondary education.

 Basic ideas about the school system in the United States.


Students normally attend 12 grades of study over 12 calendar years of
primary/elementary and secondary education before graduating and earning a
diploma that makes them eligible for admission to higher education. Education
is mandatory until age 16 (18 in some states).

 College basic ideas: Degrees you get when you graduate from college.
a college is a four year institution where you get a Bachelor. s Degree.

 Definition of the term: Licenciado and Licenciatura.


The graduate is a person who has obtained a university degree. The bachelor's
degree is the academic degree or title that is obtained after carrying out
certain higher education studies of several years (depends on the career).

 Community colleges:
A University College is a teaching center where higher studies are taught. It
can function independently or be part of a university, just like colleges and
universities.

 Public and Private Education.


There is a difference between public and private education in the USA.
Private education is usually run by religious groups. Public education is
supported by each state.
 Religious Schools and who supports them.
The private education is supported by the government.
