CHAPTER 1
❖ Contents
• Introduction
❖ What is system?
❖ What is control?
5
Cont. …
❖ Control system is a system to provide a desired
function, involving some control action in it.
7
Cont. …
❖Automatic control systems
8
Cont. …
➢ It have a central aim of developing control
strategies to improve performance of a system.
make an adjustment.
Example:
10
1.2. Examples of Control Systems
1. Water level control
11
Cont. …
2. Fluid flow control
12
Cont. …
3. Fluid flow control
13
Cont. …
4. Temperature control of an electric furnace
14
1.3. Basic terms in control systems
➢ To describe control systems, some basic terminologies
must be defined.
1. Controlled Variable:
➢ The quantity or condition that is measured and
Controlled.
➢ The output of the system.
2. Manipulated Variable:
➢ The quantity or condition that is varied by the
controller so as to affect the value of controlled
variable. 15
Cont. …
➢ The factor that is changed to keep the measured
variable at setpoint.
3. Controller:
➢ It is the element of the system itself or may be
external to the system to control the plant or
process
4. Plants:
5. Processes:
18
Cont. …
❖ Input: is a stimulus, excitation or command signal
that is applied to control system/system to get a
specified output.
7. Disturbances:
19
Cont. …
❖ Types of disturbance:
✓ Internal disturbance: generated within the
system.
✓ External disturbance: generated outside the
system.
8. Feedback Control system:
➢ A system that maintains a prescribed relationship
between the output and some reference input by
comparing them and using the difference (i.e.
error) as a means of control.
20
1.4. Types of Control System
❖Man-made Control Systems: The various control
systems designed and manufactured by human
being.
Example:
➢ Vehicles
➢ Aeroplanes
21
Cont. …
❖Basic classification of control system depending
on the relations of control action with output:
• Open-loop Control Systems
• Closed-loop Control Systems
23
Cont. …
❖Since in open-loop control systems reference input
is not compared with measured output, for each
reference input there is fixed operating condition.
24
Cont. …
❖Advantages of open-loop system:
problem of stability.
26
Cont. …
❖ Closed-loop Control Systems:
➢ The system in which controlling actions are somehow
dependent on the output or changes in output. It is control
system with feedback.
27
Cont. …
❖ Layout of closed-loop/feedback/control system
Example:

Cont. …
➢ Its block diagram representation
