DETERMINATION OF HEAT TRANSFER CO-EFFICIENT IN NATURAL

CONVECTION

AIM:

To determine the heat transfer coefficient of the given material in natural

convection.

SPECIFICATIONS:

Voltmeter : 0-300v
Ammeter : 0-5 A
Heater : 659 w
Temperature indicator : 6 channel,thermocouple ; chromel, alumel.
Variae :2A
Outer dia : 32 mm
Inner dia : 25 mm
Length : 500 mm
FORMULA USED:-

Ts = (T1 + T2 + T3 + T4 + T5 + T6) / 6

Area of heat transfer
As = πdL
d = 0.032 m ; L = 0.5m

Heat transfer co-efficient
H = q/As . (Ts – Ta)

Nu = [ 0.6 + {387(GrPr)^1/6} / { 1+ (0.559 / Pr)^ 9/16]^8/27}]2

Gr = (gbl3 ΔT) / 42
 Q = VI

 Nu = hL/k.

Tf = (Ts + Ta)/2

Β = 1/Tf ( xn - 1)

ΔT = Ts – Ta.

PROCEDURE:-

Switch on the main.

Switch on the heater and adjust the variac to required position.

Wait for steady state condition , note down the temperature readings.

Repeat the procedure for different , excitation in the variac.

Substitute the recorded values in the formula.

RESULT:-

Thus the heat transfer co-efficient of given material is determined by using

free as natural convection method.
