METAL CARBENE( CARBENOIDS)

• There are two types of metal carbene: Fischer and Schrock carbene
• Fischer carbene: The Fischer type carbene complexes are usually
formed with metal centers at a low oxidation state. These are also
commonly observed for the more electron rich late−transition metals
that participate in the LnM→CR2 type metal to ligand
π−back donation.
• Schrock carbene: It is a carbene with high oxidation state, non π-
donor ligand. It is a triplet carbene and nucleophilic in nature.

Involves two olefin substrates which form a four-membered ring
intermediate and then rearrange the substituents to form two new carbon-
carbon double bonds.

Allows the exchange of substituents between

different olefins - a transalkylidenation. This
reaction was first used in petroleum reformation for
the synthesis of higher olefins (Shell higher olefin
process - SHOP), with nickel catalysts under high
pressure and high temperatures.
