DISTANCE LEARNING: Piving up, we will keep going” THE HORIZON + EDITOR'S NO’ CLARENCE MANLAMBUS Editor-nchiet OQ oF »; editor’s note. SCHOOL YEAR 2020-2021- This school year has gone down in history due to various events that have shaken humanity. In a sudden struggle, where do we seek for support? We call for help from none other than our Almighty and ever-living God. COVID-19, shutdown of one of the biggest media and entertainment organization in the Philippines (ABS-CBN), Community Pantry, SMCC’s 75th Jubilee Celebration, etc. Name it all because we already have it. Are you looking for information about what happened this school year? Don't worry because The Horizon will deliver it to you. With the talent and knowledge from the staffers for this school year, this current magazine has been issued. The writers gave their blood and sweat to publish the needed information behind the ominous attack of COVID-19. The hearts of every staff of this school publication are even more inflamed by the call of duty - to deliver knowledge and awareness even when journalism seems to be suffering from abuse. The new education system has made a big shift to all the learners and the educators as well. It led the entire community to have no choice but to adjust, adapt, and transition to learning on their own, According to Social Weather Stations (SWS), 89% of Filipino families find distance learning to be more difficult than face-to-face classes, The less privileged students are the ones left behind, considering that they have to deal with financial issues for cellular data or WiFi. The sudden transition became a struggle for everyone, it became the new daily challenge that each student faces all throughout the day. Reports of students suffering from anxiety and mentally struggling are rapidly increasing due to this pandemic. In a survey conducted by SEQuRE, 54.7% of students said that distance learning had deeply affected them, physically and mentally. Mental breakdowns, burnout, but of course, they still have to keep going, to keep answering their modules, do the activities, the tasks that seem impossible to. accomplish, and comply. This case does not only imply to the learners, but to the moderators as well, At least 13 students and a teacher are said to have taken their own lives. This only proves how much stress, how much pressure everyone had to endure trying to accomplish school related stuff. Is this really the kind of learning everyone has to go through? All these calls for #AcademicEase, but was it verily heard? Did the overwhelming number of academic load finally lessen? Given the current situation, the lack of access to technology as well as the plodding internet connection, academic ease is definitely a great decision to lessen the mental stress of the learners and the moderators also, It is very important to make them more resilient, especially in this tough time of uncertainty and vulnerability. Education in times like this is just like the pandemic, It is not exciting but rather tiring, it is not gratifying anymore but rather depressing. Students study for the sake of passing, students attend online classes and answer their modules not because they want to learn, but because they have to comply and graduate. Yes, the students passed, proceeded to a higher level, but what did they learn? Are they really learning? Did they really learn something? Trees burnt and the leaves in a crisp dead brown state, acres destroyed, and increased rate of air pollution. These circumstances originate from the activ caused by humans, which gave rise to the existence of wildfire, including lightning and even arson. In July 2019, Australia’s catastrophic wildfire season began, which lasted until May of 2020. The fires Killed 34 individuals, including nine firefighters, according to the Australian Parliament, With hot and dry weather in Australia, fire blazes start and spread, which caused a fire season each year within the country. Around 10 million hectares of land burned, and over a billion animals have died, which caused the majority of the spec lead to extinction, One of the state premiers considered the incident as “the most devastating natural disaster in living memory? ising temperatures and strong winds produced a tinderbox that carries fire, being surrounded by larger areas. Drought and high winds increase the high risk of wildfires as water supply, transportation, communication, power, and gas services could be affected. Fire grows and spreads as the state of the climate contains ample fuel. This leads to a large scale of resources and the individual's lives in a threatening state, as significant amounts of mercury are being released into the surroundings, caused by the wildfires, Individuals could encounter such ignificant problems, including their state of hearing and walking, vision, impairment of speech, and weakness of the muscles. According to the Global Forest Watch Fires, more than 70% of the fire burn around the forest. As the capacity of the fire spreads, trees and animals burn and are dehydrated. If we look at it, wonders in our lives help us in any circumstance. What if a small cause leads to a substantial transformation? People say that one thing will not affect the entire ocean. We seek information to find out. Problems known to be one of the most talked-about is the microplastic pollution in the ocean. A small amount of plastic floating around the water surface causes significant issues, aarticularly in marine relations. are a big problem despite their tiny size, and they will keep on affecting our environment. Microplastic is not known as a problem in other regions since most people are not aware of the said issue, With a size of lesser than 02 inches G millimeters) long, it could be barely seen, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric (NOAA), microplastics are small particles identified in the ocean that damage the marine habitat. Research says that microplastics found in the ocean are floating every day. In 2014 alone, researchers i ied the number of microplastics identi B huge amount of microplastics when we can’t even count up to a trillion stars. In studies, by using plankton nets, mesh netting measures 0,004 to 0.02 inches made to capture small particles that could be complicated to use. ‘The fact that plastic pollution is “micro” plastic makes it a significant issue. Pollution that covers small particles is difficult to remove from the ocean due to its small size. Researchers have to use some kind of net to view the water particles, but it is still difficult. It is more difficult to address macroplastics, although macroplastics are also a significant problem caused by human beings As curiosity goes, where do microplastics originate? Microplastics are known to be part of larger particles in the ocean, called macroplastics. Plastic bottles, old toothbrushes, toy parts, and other old plastics are considered microplastics that break apart in the ocean creating a wide spread of microplastics. The breaking of plastics is caused by the effect of the weather from the sun and wind. It is not quite possible yet to stop the spread of these particles but instead, a combination of land-based and aquatic efforts is necessary to stop this kind of pollution. If people say that these small and tiny particles do not affect the ‘ocean, well they are wrong, These bits of plastic have the same harmful effects as microplastics in the ocean and they also cause their problem. Studies say that microplastics serve as carriers for bacteria and persistent organic pollutants (POPs). POPs are toxic September 2020 - May 2021 particles that take years to degrade. It is beneficial for the ecosystem to eliminate chemicals that are harmful to the ocean even with a small possibility. er problem and what focused on from this issue is the fact that marine life is affected. Sea creatures are mostly the ones who will suffer because it’s their natural habitat. Microplastics are harmful to the animals especially if ingested. After ingesting microplastics, seals, and other animals, may suffer for months before they die. And with the current situation, this is something to be talked about. All of us could play a part in reducing the number of microplastics on land, in the air, and most especially on the water by lessening our plastic use. As mentioned, small things make big changes. We start from a small act and eventually adapt to a lifestyle with lesser plastic, which results in a less microplastic-filled ocean. They are regularly filing and paying their taxes for the past number of years". Umaalingawngaw na naman 9 taon ang nakalipas uli ang ingay ng kahapon, Together, Towards a Fairer and Wiser Nation By Iancy Tan For over a year now, communities across the world have borne the burnt of COVID-19 pandemic. In countries rich and poor, political, socioeconomic, educational and geographic factors among others have facilitated the spread of SARS-CoV2 virus, impacting health outcomes and ‘compounding inequalities. Our challenge is immense, the spread of ‘COVID-19 continues to cause death, disease and disruption across the ‘world, It is probably safe to suggest that the impacts of this event on our daily lives are one of the most global and most deeply penetrating in ‘world history. In one way or another, all of us have been touched by the crisis, some are losing hope—scared and scarred. ‘The Philippine response to COVID-19 has been described as being ‘one of the longest and strictest lockdowns in the world and still managed to make no progress. The government has distinguished the situation of the country as being at war against an “unseen enemy.” This war however, has produced a subject, the so called headstrong and stubborn people. As the enemy of health and order, these people became the target of disciplining and policing and wore informed by deep-seated class prejudices and Duterte’s authoritarian tendencies. The government has also relied heavily on the police and the military to ensure that order was ‘maintained and that all health protocols were followed. In fact, violations ‘were met with punitive action that has led some observers to describe the ‘government's response as militarized or police-centric, Why has the Philippine government relied heavily on militarized measures in its “war against COVID-19? Is itjust the health crisis that we are battling with or is it the government's injustices? It’s been a year now and itis safe to say that there is no progress— people are suffering, people are dying. Millions have lost their jobs, killings have risen to 50% during a pandemic, health workers are ‘exhausted, funds have been missing—the government has failed to serve its people. We are in the middle of a pandemic, a public health crisis but it seems that the only thing the government could think of as a solution is, violence, corruption and police brutality. It cannot be denied that even today, social and economic inequities ‘continue to hinder the right of everyone, everywhere, in achieving the highest attainable standard of physical and mental health— an injustice that we must not accept. Our mission is clear—we can and must prevail Together, towards a fairer and wiser nation! Gen.
