Smederevo in the American Press during the First World War

This paper discusses the texts about Smederevo in the American press
during the First World War (1914-1918), which are available on the website
of the US Library of Congress, more precisely - selected digitized material
which is available under the section Chronicling America (Historical
Newspapers) at the following website: http://chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/.
More specifically, this paper attempts a critical reading of contemporary
American press of that period, and offers quantitative and qualitative
analysis of newspaper articles, as well as the context of their publication.
Review of these texts is chronologically based and presents the contribution
to the history of the First World War in Smederevo and partly in Serbia, as
well as to the history of journalism, the social history of the media, and also
to the understanding of the propaganda significance in the context of the
first “total war” in the history of mankind.
Analysis of the newspaper articles of foreign newspapers, in particular
from the United States, is significant for several reasons. Quantitative
analysis, by counting the total number of articles mentioning Smederevo,
or Smederevo in the context of military operations, or the events in Serbia
during the occupation, we will understand the importance that newspaper
editors have given to Serbia, including Smederevo. A review of a newspaper
titles, places and countries of origin, we can see that across the United
States existed a wish to inform the public about the events from the distant
Europe. The analysis of the language of press from the period, the paths
through which news were coming to US newspaper editors, size of texts and
places that have had the news from Smederevo, we come to the qualitative
analysis, which we also need to fully understand the topic.
