1 GENERAL

1.1. This standard refers to the concrete slabs used for pavements of sidewalks, platforms, halls, generally in places
with pedestrians or small vehicles.

1.2. The slabs are produced by mechanical pressing, being made up of a single layer of concrete with hard rock
aggregates or of two layers of which the principle one from regular concrete and the wear one from hard rock
aggregates.

1.3. The slabs for pavements are produced either in the natural colour of their binding agent and of the aggregates, or
colored.

1.4. The colour is settled on order on the basis of an agreement between the parties.

1.5. The force unit SI legal in Romania which is the Newton (N) was considered in this standard approximated to 1 N
= 0.1 kgf.
1
The exact transformation is 1 N = kgf

2.3. Physico-mechanical characteristics

2.3.1. The wear layer produced with aggregates of hard rock have the thickness of 1/3 from the thickness of the slab,
but at least 15mm. The adherence between the wear layer and the primary layer shall be well executed, so that when the
slab breaks they will not separate.

2.3.2. After 28 days from ececution, the slabs for pavement shall meet requirements indicated in table 3.

Wear of the wear layer, mm max. 1.3
Frost/thaw strength no damage shall appear on any of the specimens
Note. ─ For the slabs scales I, II and III the determination of the bending strength is not mandatory.

2.4. Materials

2.4.1. The aggregates used are of hard broken rock, with dimensions to 1/3 from the thickness of the respective layer,
or of pit aggregate.

2.4.2. The binder used shall be cement with the minimal compression strength at 28 days of 4000 N/ cm2 (400 kgf/
2
cm ).

3. QUALITY VERIFICATION RULES

3.1. The verification performed on the slabs are the following:

─ preliminary tests;
─ periodical tests;
─ current test.

3.1.1. A specialised institute performs the preliminary tests, before beginning the mass production, or every time the
technological process, the equipment or the quality of the raw materials change, but at least once every 5 years.

3.1.2. The periodical test are performed at least twice a year and consist of:
─ determination of bending strength ─ on 3 test pieces;
─ determination of wear strength ─ on 3 test pieces;
─ determination of frost/defrost strength ─ on 3 test pieces.
These tests are performed on one of the batches under investigation in the respective period.

3.1.3. The current tests are performed continuously on all batches of slabs, made up in accordance with table 4, on
specimens taken randomly from the batches and consist of:
─ size test;
─ aspect test;
─ impact strength test (only scales I, II and III).

3.1.4. Additional tests are performed only for the determinations, which were off-size on the first test.

3.2. The component materials (aggregate, cement, water) are tested in accordance with STAS 1799-65 for category
I of works.

4. TEST ANDVERIFICATION METHODS

4.1. Breach sizes and scale are measured with regular measuring instruments with an accuracy of 0.1mm, and
the colour is tested visually.

4.2. Flatness test for the surfaces (deflection) and deviation from the 900 angle test are performed in
accordance with STAS 451-68.

4.3. Determination of bending strength is performed on 3 slabs previously kept for 3 days wrapped in wet
cloths or introduced in wet sand.
the slabs are placed on two bearings of which distance (ls) shall be regulated according to slabs dimensions (l)
so that ls = l – 60mm.
The test load is applied in the middle as concentrated load in the axis of the weight centre of the slab.
A steel plate with a diameter of 5 cm and a thickness of 1.5 cm is placed under the point where the load is
applied, a board disk with a diameter of 5 cm is placed under this plate.
5 STAS 1137-68

Before testing, the bearing surfaces are leveled with cement mortar (1 : 1).
The bending strength is calculated with the formula:
MB
σi = N/cm2 (kgf/ cm2).
W
where
P × ls
MB = ;
4
bh 2
W=
6
P is the breaking load, in N (kgf);
ls is the distance between the axis of the bearings, in cm;
b is the width of the slab, in cm;
h is the thickness of the slab, in cm.

4.4. Determination of wear strength is performed in accordance with STAS 5501-68. The result is given by the
mean of the results obtained on the three test pieces.

4.5. Impact test by free fall of a weight, is performed in accordance with STAS 451-68.
For the slabs sizes I, II and III the weight for the test is done of 5 N (0.5 kgf).
The height of the fall of the weight:
– for slabs size I-60 cm,
– for slabs size II and III – 70 cm.

4.6. Frost/thaw test is performed on three specimens of slabs.

The slabs are submerged in a water basin at 150C, where it is kept for 4 hours. They are taken out of the water,
the excess of water is wiped with a wet cloth and exposed to frost in a refrigerator at –150C for 4 hours.
The slabs are taken out of the refrigerator and introduced again in the water basin for thawing, where they are
kept for 4 hours.
The frost/thaw operation is repeated for 20 times, then observe and write down the aspect of the tested slabs is
observed and written down.

5. DELIVERY, MARKING, STORAGE AND TRANSPORT

5.1. The slabs can be delivered only if they reached the prescribed bending strength, or after 28 days from
manufacturing.

5.2. Each delivery shall have a document of quality certification, issued by the producer on the basis of the control
register.
The quality certificates shall comprise;
– the production mark;
– the number and date of the certificate;
– the number of slabs and type;
– the wear strength;
– the bending strength;
– the frost/thaw strength;
– the signature of the commissioners of the service of quality technical control from the enterprises.

5.3. The slabs are marked on the invisible surface, with the factory mark and STAS 1137-68, at least one in 100
pieces.

5.4. The storage is done in piles of max. 1.5 m height; between the rows it is recommended that strip boards are
placed.

5.5. The slabs are transported with special means of transportation. They shall be placed in the vehicles in such a
way as not to be damaged during the transport.

5.6. Their upload or download by rolling or throwing is forbidden.
