Recipe
In Textile, different chemical ingredients and their
amount required for any chemical operation can be
called as recipe. These chemical operation can be
sizing, de-sizing, mercerization, pre-treatment,
dyeing, finishing etc.
Recipe is basically a list contains chemicals, dyes,
auxiliaries and their amount (either % or g/L)
including, the material-liquor ratio and weight of
fabric/yarn/garment.
Example of recipe
Fabric Type Lycra S/J
M:L 1:10
Color Black
Chemicals and auxiliaries Dosing
Leveling agent 1.00 g/L
Anti-creasing agent 2.00 g/L
Sequestering agent 0.50 g/L
Indofix Yellow 3RL 0.5000 %
Indofix Red H4BL 0.6000 %
Indofix Black GC 5.0000 %
Gluber Salt 80.00 g/L
Soda ash 5.00 g/L
Caustic soda 0.50 g/L
Calculation of recipe
Before calculation, we have to know something.
In case of textile dyeing, the liquid ingredients
are expressed in g/L (gram per Liter) and
calculated from the Liquor, the solid ingredients
are expressed as % (percentage) and calculated
from the weight of fabric.
In short, if there is g/L, it has to be calculated
from the liquor and if there is %, it has to be
calculated from the fabric weight.
Calculation of recipe
Say, for the recipe, the material-liquor ratio is
M:L = 1:10 and of the fabric weight is 5g then
total liquor required is (5x10) = 50ml.
Now, if the amount is in g/L, the calculation will
be
𝑔/𝐿 ×(𝐹𝑎𝑏𝑟𝑖𝑐 𝑤𝑡×𝐿𝑖𝑞𝑢𝑜𝑟 𝑟𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑜)
Required =
1000
𝑔/𝐿 ×(𝑇𝑜𝑡𝑎𝑙 𝑙𝑖𝑞𝑢𝑜𝑟)
=
1000
Calculation of recipe
For example, for 5g of fabric, the leveling agent
required
1𝑔/𝐿 ×(5×10)
= = 0.05g
1000
Anti-creasing agent required
2𝑔/𝐿 ×(5×10)
= = 0.1g
1000
Sequestering agent required
0.5𝑔/𝐿 ×(5×10)
= = 0.025g
1000
Calculation of recipe
The calculation for g/L is we know already. Now
take a look how we can calculate the amount
from %.
Required = Fabric weight x percentage
For example, Indofix Yellow 3RL dye required for
5g fabric,
= Fabric wt x percentage = 5g x 0.5% = 0.025g
Calculation from stock solution
In the previous slides, we see that how we can
calculate the required amount of dyes, chemicals
and auxiliaries from the recipe card. But, the
resultant amounts are sometimes very small to
measure by the electric balance. So we need to
produce stock solution and then calculate the
amount from stock solution.

Calculation from stock solution
Formula for calculation from stock solution
Required amount in ml
= Required amount (g) x (100/stock solution%)
For example, for leveling agent, the amount is
0.05g. So considering 1% stock solution, it will be
= 0.05 x(100/1) = 5ml
For Indofix Yellow 3RL dye, the amount from 1%
stock solution is
= 0.025 x (100/1) = 2.5ml
Calculation from stock solution
So the formulae we can write are
𝑔/𝐿 ×(𝐹𝑎𝑏𝑟𝑖𝑐 𝑤𝑡×𝐿𝑖𝑞𝑢𝑜𝑟 𝑟𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑜) 100
Required = 1000
× 𝑆𝑡𝑜𝑐𝑘%
𝑔/𝐿 ×(𝑇𝑜𝑡𝑎𝑙 𝑙𝑖𝑞𝑢𝑜𝑟) 100
= 1000
× 𝑆𝑡𝑜𝑐𝑘%
Required = Fabric weight x percentage x (100/Stock%)
