OPTION A

Should the State tell us what to eat and drink?

Text suggested by the Complutense University 2016

Anyone who, in an honest spirit of enquiry, has watched many of us eat and drink will have been
frightened at the sight. A large part of the population has become simultaneously gluttonous or rather it
chooses terrible things to consume and terrible ways of consuming them. How far should the government be
responsible for the health consequences of it population‘s lack taste and self-control?
We should over look far deeper and the more revealing aspects of national diet, however. Most people
prefer not to think about these, because they reveal society in a state of profound decomposition. If you
examine the national rubbish, as I do where ever I walk, you discover that it is composed mainly of the
wrappings of junk and food. We eat on the street to a degree almost anywhere else.
But why should this be? A psychologist told me that half of our homes no longer have a dining table.
Flats in which there are no dining tables are also flats in which not much in the way of the cooking fresh
ingredients goes on. The microwave is the cooker, the saucepan, the casserole dish and the entire battery of
the kitchen in fact; and everyone in the family eats not as a social activity, but almost furtively. Meals are
nasty, solitary and short.
In other words, one of the most elementary but important and enjoyable of all social activities, eating
together, is now restricted to considerable proportion of the population.

OPTION B

South American wild cats

Since time immemorial felines have been venerated in America, North and South. Their shapes
appear engraved on ancient artifacts and in the form of modern statues. But in the last century, jaguars,
pumas and other Americans felines have declined alarmingly in number. So much so, that they may become
extinct. As a result, researchers in Spain and Argentina have embarked on a project for the reservation of ten
feline’s species in Latin America. For the next three years, they will be working for the creation of two
genetics banks one in Madrid and one in Buenos Aires, to keep away the threat that is loom over these
animals.
This threat comes from human activity since 1920; the population of Latin America has tripled to 480
million people. A quarter of this forest area has disappeared, and activities such as hunting, fishing, mining
and farming intensify human impact on the environment, so that the natural habitat of these species has been
hugely reduced. This reduction of the habitat reduces the population.
So far, the problem has been addressed by introducing new animals into the region, with problems of
transport and adaptation leading to poor chances of success. Now, the plan is to apply assisted reproduction
techniques, fertilizing females with semen from males from other regions, including various zoos in
Argentina and Spain. Scientists hope that, a few decades into the future, the word jaguar or puma may be
more than mere names and memories.
