SEA SEA VENOM-ANL

FUTURE ANTI-SURFACE GUIDED

The next generation multi-role surface attack weapon WEAPON-ANTI-NAVIRE LEGER
MBDA is designing a helicopter-launched, over-the-horizon anti-ship weapon which is
being jointly funded by the UK and French Governments. It will be capable of defeating
the most challenging target set presented by today’s open water and littoral maritime
operations.

The new weapon features significant advances on both Sea Skua and AS15TT:

• Long stand-off range providing helicopter protection against air defence systems
• Ability to select precise target aim point
• Upon weapon release, the launch helicopter has immediate tactical freedom of manoeuvre
• The new seeker option will allow target information to be relayed via a two-way data link to
the operator. This target data will enable the operator to make changes to the missile
guidance during free flight
• Precision targeting, both day and night, using legacy onboard sensors
• A lighter weapon enables increased weapon load-out as well as a grater number of platforms
on which SEA VENOM-ANL could be integrated

The new design will maintain some of the earlier characteristics of Sea Skua and AS15TT allowing
current users to upgrade easily. By retaining compatibility with existing logistic footprints, the
following benefits will be accrued:

• Only minor modifications needed to existing ship storage and handling equipment, serving to
lower integration costs
• Retaining high helicopter load-out
• Minimal impact on logistics and through-life costs

• Effective against a wide target set, both sea and land

• Increased platform survivability against defended targets thanks to stand-off range and
two-way data link
• Selectable target aim point for tactical flexibility
• Suitable for a wide range of helicopter platforms including Wildcat, Panther and NH90
• Integrates readily onto maritime platforms already operating Sea Skua and AS15TT
• Minimised through-life costs for existing Sea Skua and AS15TT users
Name
SEA • SEA VENOM-ANL

Missile characteristics
• Weight: c. 110 kg
The new 30 kg class warhead is designed to defeat the most demanding targets including: • Length: c. 2.5 m
• Diameter: c. 200 mm
• The emerging Fast Attack Craft (FAC) and Fast Inshore Attack Craft (FIAC) threat
• Speed: High subsonic
ranging from 50 to 500 tonnes
• Traditional corvettes
• Coastal land targets
• Larger vessels can be severely damaged and immobilised through precision aim point
selection

With air defences becoming more prevalent on vessels of all sizes and with the ever
increasing range capability of these defences, the long stand-off range of
SEA VENOM-ANL allows the launch helicopter to remain safely outside the danger zone.

The infrared seeker, with a two-way data link, allows operator-in-the-loop control to decide
whether to destroy and sink the target or simply to disable it. Fire-and-forget operation can also
be used.

As a drop launched weapon, SEA VENOM-ANL allows for simple platform integration.

SEA VENOM-ANL is planned to be integrated on AW159 Wildcat, Panther and NH90 helicopters.
