What is Mindfulness and how is it Related

to Mindlessness?
By Mr. Joshua Vidal*

Mindfulness is a practice for helping individuals become more aware of their own

emotions and thoughts. It's also used to assist people comprehend how they might adjust their

behavior to be more mindful. It has been proven that mindfulness improves both mental and

physical health, as well as emotional and social well-being. However, on the other hand, we

should be mindful to the term mindlessness, which refers to the condition of being without

control or control over our actions and feelings. It implies refusing to be ruled by our thoughts

and feelings.

Mindlessness is defined by Merriam-Webster as "a lack of knowledge or comprehension

of one's own ideas and feelings." The question then becomes: who controls our feelings when we

are mindless? I believe that being mindless allows a person to understand what is right and

wrong; thus, once you have the ability to discern between the two, it is up to you to decide where

you stand, but you must take accountability for your decision.

Therefore, for me, on the other hand, mindfulness and mindlessness cannot be detached

from one another, they have to be connected in some way. I believe that you were once mindless

before you became conscious.
