A. AIR SYSTEM
See Schematic Air Piping Diagram.
1. AIR PRESSURE
This drawworks is ~esigned to operate on air pressure of 120 psi.
If the available air supply is higher than 130 psi a regulator should
be installed to reduce the pressure to 120 psi. The drawworks should
never be operated at less than 100 psi as damage to the air clutches
wi 11 result.
Gages in the control panel show the supply air pressure and the high
and low drum clutch pressure. The drum clutch valve should allow f~ll
pressure up to 120 psi when fully engaged. If the drum clutch gages:
show less than supply pressure, when the clutch valve is fully engag~d~
the valve should be adjusted. See the WABCO service bulletin in this book .

2. AIR FILTER
An air filter is provided to remove moisture and dirt from the incoming
air. This filter is located beside the drawworks housing under the
spinning cathead. It should be serviced daily by loosening the wing
nut and allowing the water and sludge to drain out. Once every ninety
days the filter bowl should be remq~d and the bowl and element cleaned.
Be sure to shut off the air valve ahead of the filter before disassembling.
3. AIR VALVES
Air control valves should be occasionally disassembled, cleaned and
lubricated. See WABCO service bulletin in this book. This maintenance
should be done when the rig is shut down for at least several hours.
B. CLUTCHES AND QUICK RELEASE VALVES
1. All air clutches on the drawworks are Airflex contracting type with
neoprene tubes. No adjustment or lubrication is necessary. If proper
air system pressure is not maintained the clutches may slip causing
damage to them.
2. All air clutches on the drawworks are equipped with quick release valves.
On the drum clutches the quick release valves are mounted on the periphery
of the clutch. On the rotary and sandline clutches the quick release
valves are located at the inlet of the rotorseal supply hose. All quick
release valves should be checked frequently for proper release of air.
The clutch shoes should release in three to four seconds after the clutch
valve is released. If the quick release valves do not operate properly
they should be disassembled and cleaned. If they still do not operate
properly they should be replaced.

3. All rotorseals on the drawworks are permanently lubricated and do

not require servicing.
C. BRAKES
It is important that the brakes be kept properly adjusted and maintained
at all times.
1. MAIN DRUM
When properly adjusted the extreme end of the main drum brake lever
should be 34" ± 2" above the floor. This position should be main-
tained to insure efficient operation of the brake.
To adjust the main drum brakes, loosen the hammer nuts on the dead
end bolts and remove the adjusting wrenches from the equalizer beam.
Adjust the dead end nuts until the brake lever is in the proper
position when the blocks are firmly against the brake rims. Check
the equalizer beam so that equal clearance exists between each end
of the equalizer beam and the skid stops. This clearance should be
approximately 1/8 inch and can be checked with the gage block attached
to the adjusting wrench. After the adjustment is made, replace the f
wrenches on the equalizer beam and tighten the hammer nuts. Adjust '
the release springs and rollers around each brake band to allow the~
brake blocks to release l/8 inch from the brake rim.
Maximum allowable wear on the main drum brake blocks is 5/8 inch.
Maximum allowable wear on the main drum brake rims is 7/8 inch.
2. SANDLINE DRUM
Adjust brakes for wear by turning the combination equalizing and
adjusting nuts inside the brake beam. When the brake is properly
adjusted the brake lever should be 8 degrees below the horizontal.
(Approximately 2/3 the length of the ratchet.) After adjusting the
bands, adjust the band support rollers and springs to allow the
blocks to release l/8 inch from the brake rims.
Maximum allowable wear on the sandline drum brake blocks is 3/8 inch.
Maximum allowable wear on the main drum brake rims is 7/8 inch.
D. BRAKE COOLING WATER
1. The main drum brakes are cooled by circulating water and require a
water supply capable of providing 50 gallons per minute at 40-50 psi
pressure. This water temperature should not exceed 100° F. (38° C.).
The connections for the brake water are located in the back skid beam
on the driller's end.
2. AUXILIARY WATER BRAKE
When an auxiliary water brake is used, a water level tank is furnished

to control the water level in the brake, which in turn controls

the amount of braking desired. The out1et in the bottom of the
tank is controlled by a float so that as the water level increases
the valve opens until the flow out is the same as the flow in, and
a constant level is maintained. To increase the water level, air
pressure supplied to the actuator on top o~ the tank is reduced,
which pushes the float down partially closing the valve. The water
level will then rise until the increased buoyancy of the float will
overcome the actuator, opening the outlet valve. When the valve
opens sufficiently to allow the flow in and out to equalize, a new
level will be established in the tank and in the brake. The actuator
is controlled from the drillers position and an infinite number of
water levels can be established by turning the control valve.
The overflow line from the top of the tank must be kept open to
prevent a pressure build up from crushing the float.
A water supply of 160 gallons per minute at 10 psi and 100° F.(38° C.)
Maximum should be available when using the auxiliary water brake.
