A:

1. Normal cells spend the most time in interphase, as shown on the graph. A normal cell
cell spends 19/20 of their time in interphase.
2. Cells spend the most time in interphase as this is the time when cells are resting,
growing, and doing normal cell tasks. An example of these tasks is providing energy via
cellular respiration.
3. The Normal Stomach has the highest mitotic index. It is the highest type of normal
mitotic index because when you add up all sections A,B,C,D,E and then divide them. Out
of the three, Normal Stomach has the highest percentage.
B:
4. Checkpoints in the cell cycle are there to ensure that all processes in the cell are
conducted correctly and in order. This is the way to ensure that cancerous cells do not
appear or spread.
5.
a. The Cell Growth Checkpoint is the most important because in this process it
needs to check that the cells have enough proteins to survive and to see if it had
enough rest so the cells can divide properly.
b. If the group were to add a checkpoint, we would add it at the start of G1, as this
is when a new cell has just formed, so it can be checked if it divided properly.
This ensures early warning of cancerous cells.
6. The relationship between the cell cycle and cancer is that cancer occurs when a process
in the cell cycle does not happen properly.
7.

8.
a. The data indicates that cancer cells spread/ divide much faster than Normal cells.
b. The percent of cells in mitosis is higher in cancerous cells than in normal cells
because the cancerous cells are dividing quicker than the normal cells
c. Cancerous Ovary is the most aggressive. According to the data table it has the
highest cell dividing percentage.
d. Cancerous tissue had a higher rate of mitosis compared to normal tissue
because it is dividing faster than normal tissue. Normal stomach tissue has a
mitotic index of 0.25 or 25%, while cancerous stomach tissue has a mitotic index
of 0.43 or 43%.
9.
a. Diagram B shows the beginning phase of cancerous cells as this is the point
where cancerous cells first appear.
b. There are 0 cancer cells visible in image A.
c. In image C, the cancer cells have metastasized as.
d. If the cancerous cells were left untreated, they would metastasize across the
body and take over the body, not allowing the normal cells to exist.
