Australia is another country where computer games are very popular, with 90% of households
having a device to play a computer game. A 2016 survey showed 83% of people use a PC to play
games, while 66% use a tablet and 55% a mobile phone. Games consoles remain popular with 62%
of gamers.
Slightly more men than women are gamers. However, one interesting result is how many older
gamers there are. The average age of a gamer is quite high – 33 years old! In fact, 39% of people
aged 65 and over play games! Some parents and grandparents play with young children as a way of
sharing a fun activity. Others use mobile games to stay in touch with their grown-up sons and
daughters. Word games or puzzles are very popular for this reason. Many older Australians say
games help them stay mentally active. Some doctors believe that playing computer games prevents
brain diseases that often come with old age.
