 INTRODUCTION

In general, translation is a complex activity, as it requires high demands on the performer.

The rendering of fiction is usually the most difficult, since in this case the translator must not only
have translation skills, but also the skills of a writer or poet. It is quite difficult to understand
explicitly and implicitly of expressed information. Therefore, analysis is required before translation
to achieve the best possible result. This project is devoted to the translation of some chapters and
prologue of detective book ‘The Long Game’ written by Simon Rowell and analysing the
translational challenges, outlining the peculiarities of their solving and interpretation into the target
language. The relevance of this study is that, despite the peculiarities of translation of fiction, the
translation of detective works, the analysis of these translations and its practical use on the
examples of texts leave a wide field for research.
This genre has one characteristic line: the reader does not know all the circumstances of the
incident until the investigation is completed. The author provides important elements of the
investigation in portions. So the reader can put forward their ideas “What will happen next?” based
on the information received.
The author describes the investigation in such a way that the reader understands the essence,
but does not know the small details. This motivates him to immerse himself in the detective even
more in order to understand the importance of each event. The translator must translate the text in
such a way as not to lose information that will help to find the clue and see the full picture of the
incident. If the goal is to keep the intrigue to the end, then the translator should not reveal important
information prematurely.
The goal of this project is to translate the book ‘The Long Game’ into the target language
using all the necessary means in order to adapt it for Ukrainian readers.
Pursuant to the goal, the following objectives of this project were defined:
1. to characterize the text and specify ways of its translation;
2. to make the analysis of performed translation, describing most common challenges and
suggesting methods of their solution;
3. to distinguish lexical, grammatical transformations and stylistic devices of the text.
4. to summarize transformations made in the process of translation.

The work consists of introduction, translation, translation commentary and conclusions. The
translation project consists of 37 pages of the actual translation and 15 pages of translation
commentary. The source text consists of 9182 words and 42141 characters, and target language
translation consists of 7074 words and 37956 characters.

THE SOURCE TEXT
PROLOGUE
He sat in his car, high above the Portsea back beach, near the
very tip of the Mornington Peninsula, watching the waves rolling in
off Bass Strait, a single bead of sweat on his temple. His was the
only car at this end of the car park. Behind him were scrubby dunes,
and before him was an endless stretch of ocean. The summer sun,
now high in the sky, blanched the scene like a faded polaroid. He
held the large knife loosely, bouncing it gently in his right hand,
happy with its weight. He turned it to and fro, glinting the sun’s rays
off its silver edge. Twelve inches long, the knife had a series of black
dots on its handle, making it easy to grip.
When he’d been a young boy, his mother would take him to the
bayside beaches a few kilometres north, across the peninsula, where
the water was calm enough for him to paddle about. He could only
remember his father taking him to the beach a couple of times, and it
was always here, on the wilder ocean side, amid the saltbush and
wallaby grass that clung tightly to the dunes.
‘Tasmania is out there. Can you see it?’ his father had asked,
pointing.
He’d squinted and lied that he could.
He shook his head at the memory. Despite himself, he looked up
at the horizon and stared again. Out beyond the break, teenagers sat
on surfboards, laughing and calling to one another. He’d been parked
for ten minutes, watching them ignore one perfect wave after
another. He knew what they were thinking: that there were plenty of
waves, and there always would be. He remembered thinking the
same thing. That everything lasts forever.

Він сидів у машині недалеко від пляжу приморського
містечка Портсея, крайньої точки півострова Морнінгтон, і
дивився, як хвилі Басового проливу розбиваються о берег.
Чолом йому стікала цівка поту. В цьому кінці парка було пусто:
лише порослі чагарником пагорби позаду і безкінечний простір
океану попереду. Сонце в зеніті висвітлювало цю картину,
роблячи її схожою на полароїдний знімок. Правою рукою він
підкидував ніж, насолоджуючись вагою під пальцями. Срібне
лезо відбивало яскраві промені сонця. Чудова зброя: зручна
ручка із заглибинами для пальців і довге, майже
тридцятисантиметрове, лезо.
В дитинстві мама часто брала його на пляж, дібратися до
якого можна було, пройшовши декілька кілометрів на північ.
Вода там була спокійна, тому вона не боялась відпускати його
купатися. Батько приїздив з ними декілька разів, але вона —
вона! — завжди була там, за гладдю океану, де-не-де покрита
чагарниками і жухлою травою, що чіплялась коренями за пісок.
— Он там Тасманія, бачиш? – питав бувало батько,
вказуючи в ту сторону.
Він мружився і брехав, що бачить.
Відкинувши думки, знову втупився в горизонт, не даючи собі
згадати ще щось. Нижче, у бухті, сиділи підлітки із дошками для
серфінгу та голосно сміялися, викрикуючи щось один до одного.
За десять хвилин, що він стояв тут, дітлахи пропустили всі
ідеальні хвилі. Напевне, думали, що хвиль ще буде вдосталь.
Колись він також так думав. Думав, що все триватиме вічність.

 As a wave broke to his left, he traced his knife through the air,
following the slice of white water across the deep blue.
Through the open window, he caught the tart scent of green
apple. He turned sharply, staring for a long moment, an impossible
expectation filling his mind. Then the perfume was gone, leaving a
memory in its place.
It was time.
He returned the knife to his backpack on the passenger seat, and
stepped out of the car. He walked around it, checking that the
number plates were screwed on tight. Then he took a few steps
towards the sea and breathed in as he watched another wave forming.
When it started to break, he exhaled until the wave petered out near
the turquoise water close to shore. He did this several times. It
calmed him. He was in control. He had no other choice.
Shutting his eyes, he sucked in one last deep breath. He got back
behind the wheel and eased out of the car park, pulling his baseball
cap down low.
He kept under the speed limit, as the road curved through dunes,
passing a row of drooping sheoaks and clumps of green tussock
grass. After a minute, he turned left into Latham Drive. As he’d
expected, the street was empty. It was too hot for gardening and
everyone would have walked their dogs earlier. People would either
be inside staying cool, out back by their pools, or at the beach.
He took his foot off the accelerator and let the car glide the last
thirty metres into the empty driveway.
After checking the rear-view mirror, he grabbed the backpack,
opened the door silently and stepped out. Using the door as cover, he
slipped the knife into the back pocket of his jeans, before letting his
shirt fall back over the handle.
He felt good. He could hear the orchestra’s drums thumping,
racing towards a crescendo. Soon, it would be over.

потім підійшов до води і вдихнув свіжого повітря,
спостерігаючи, як формується хвиля. Він видихав у такт із тим,
як хвиля наближалась до бірюзової лінії берегу, і повторив це

він звернув на вулицю Лесем-драйв, як і очікувалось, порожню.
Для роботи в саду було занадто жарко, а для вигулу собак —
занадто пізно. Всі люди або поховалися вдома, шукаючи
прохолоди, або сиділи на задньому подвір’ї біля басейнів, або
рушили на пляж.
Він відпустив педаль газу і повільно проїхав останні
тридцять метрів під’їздної доріжки.
Глянувши у дзеркало заднього виду, він підхопив рюкзак,
тихо відкрив двері і ступив у коридор. Сховав ніж у задню
кишеню, прикривши себе дверима, і поправив сорочку, щоб
прикрити рукоятку.
Як добре. Оркестр бив у барабани, наближалось крещендо.
Скоро все завершиться.

SUNDAY 2 FEBRUARY
The familiar metallic smell enveloped Zoe as she reached the
end of the hallway. Under her old dark work suit she was wearing a
new white shirt, not yet washed enough to feel comfortable against
her skin. Her black Doc Martens, polished soft over many years,
were encased in powder blue plastic booties. She adjusted her
forensic mask and from the doorway looked down at the man
slumped against the far wall. Zoe thought he looked about forty, fit
with sun-bleached blond hair and a deep tan. His pale blue eyes
stared back at her in surprise. His mouth was open and his arms were
spread out, as if he were still pleading for life.
Zoe could see the blade of a large knife, an intricate pattern of
dots etched into its silver handle, disappearing into a short-sleeved
shirt, once white, now stained a rich burgundy.
On the wall above the body a mirror was shattered, shards still
held loosely together by its frame. She saw herself reflected from
across the room, her tanned face and dark ponytail shattered into a
dozen abstract angles. Looks about right, she thought with a wry
smile, considering the reason for the four months of enforced leave
she’d just taken. At that moment, one of the pieces of glass fell,
bouncing off the victim’s head and landing, point first, in the
thickening blood pooled around the body.
Zoe swept her eyes around the room. The furniture looked
cheap and new, except the television, which was high-end and huge.
Nothing seemed to match, as if it had all been bought in a hurry.
In the distance, she could hear waves crashing and children
squealing.
Even inside, the late-summer heat baked her throat and she
wished she’d left her jacket in the car. She cursed the idea of the
dark suit as the standard homicide uniform.

Під поношеним робочим костюмом сьогодні була новенька біла
сорочка, яка неприємно відчувалась на шкірі. Чорні Doc Martens,
які багато вже побачили, ховались під синіми бахілами.
Натягнувши маску на носа, вона глянула на тіло чоловіка, що
розпласталося у стіни навпроти. Чоловікові було під сорок, він
був стрункий, із вигорілим світлим волоссям і темною засмагою.
Його світлі очі завмерли, ніби здивовано дивлячись на Зої. Рот
відкритий, руки простягнуті уперед, ніби він все ще благав про
помилування.
Лезо ножа з рукояткою з темними вигинами ховалось за
тканиною сорочки з коротким рукавом — колись білої, а тепер
багряно-червоної.
Над тілом висіло розбите дзеркало, майже всі уламки якого,
на диво, залишились у рамі. Вона бачила себе у відображенні,
ніби в калейдоскопі: загоріле обличчя й темне волосся, зібране в
кінський хвіст, розділились на безліч маленьких сегментів. “Так
і має бути”, – подумала вона і вимучено посміхнулась, думаючи
про причину чотиримісячної вимушеної відпустки. І саме у цей
момент один із уламків впав, відскочив від голови жертви і
приземлився у загуслу калюжу крові, розлиту під тілом.
Зої оглянула кімнату. Дешеві, але нові меблі, серед яких
виділявся дорогий величезний телевізор. Він зовсім не пасував
до інтер’єру, ніби його купили поспіхом.
Десь далеко було чутно, як хвилі бились об берег і сміялись
дітлахи.
Навіть у будинку було задушливо жарко, і Зої пожалкувала,
що не лишила піджак у машині. І хто придумав вдягати темний
костюм, як стандартну уніформу у відділі вбивств?

 When her phone had rung, just before lunch, she felt a rush
seeing the number on the screen. She called Charlie straight
afterwards to say they had a job. He moaned when she told him it
was in Portsea, an hour and a half’s drive south of Melbourne,
around the arc of Port Phillip Bay.
‘Welcome back,’ he had mumbled, before hanging up.
While being part of the weekend on-call team wasn’t Charlie’s
idea of a good time, Zoe was ready to go, happy to be back. Now she
was here, though, she needed to keep her game face on. She heard
footsteps coming up the hall.
‘Detective Sergeant Mayer. Good to see you.’ It was Oliver
Nunan, the pathologist. He wore a white jumpsuit, with a hood and
mask. His powder blue plastic booties matched hers. When Zoe was
in training, Oliver had performed the first autopsy she’d witnessed.
He was sympathetic when, along with most of her class, she threw
up into one of the sick bags he’d handed out beforehand. She became
a vegetarian that day.
Zoe had always liked Oliver. He had been kind-hearted and
patient when she was learning the ropes. She pivoted to face him,
smiling behind her mask.
‘Hi, Oliver. Good to see you, too. How’ve you been?’
Oliver gave a resigned snort.
‘Okay, though I’d prefer to be at home watching the cricket.’ He
turned to take in the scene. ‘Well, that’s just unpleasant,’ he
muttered, looking down at the body. Zoe noticed that his greying
eyebrows had grown longer since she’d last seen him.
Three major-crime-scene examiners from Forensics pushed past
them into the room. All were wearing jumpsuits and masks. One had
a case of tools, for collecting evidence; one a video camera and the
last a large Nikon. The woman holding the video camera took a slow

капюшоном і маска. На ногах красувались такі ж сині бахіли, як
і у Зої. Коли Зої ще тільки проходила стажування, Олівер
вперше показав їй, як робиться розтин, і навіть не засміявся,
коли дівчину, як і більшість людей із групи, знудило у пакет,
приготований заздалегідь. Того дня Зої вирішила стати
вегетаріанкою.
Олівер завжди їй подобався. Він був добрим і терплячим
учителем. Дівчина повернулась до нього, всміхаючись, хоч
цього і не було видно під маскою.
— Привіт, Олівере. Я також рада тебе бачити. Як справи?
Він голосно фиркнув.
— Ну, я б краще вдома сидів і дивився крикет, – він
повернувся, щоб оглянути місце вбивства. — Мало приємного, –
промовив він, дивлячись на тіло. Зої помітила, що його сиві
брови стали густішими з того часу, як вони в останнє бачились.
Троє криміналістів із відділу судмедекспертизи пройшли
повз них у кімнату. Всі вони були одягнені у костюми і маски. У
однієї з них була скринька з інструментами для збору доказів, у
другої — відеокамера, третій тримав величезну камеру Nikon.

‘Hey there, Zoe,’ said the officer carrying the tools. ‘When did
you get back?’
‘Hi, Jenny. Today. Charlie and I are on call.’
‘Glad you’re back on deck. Charlie putting off the inevitable?’
Zoe grinned behind her mask.
‘Guess so. He’s checking outside the house.’
‘Being thorough,’ said Jenny. Zoe could see her smile lines
around her eyes.
Once the scene had been documented, Oliver approached the
body. He felt for a pulse that was long gone.
Zoe remained in the doorway.
‘Looks like just the one stab wound,’ he said. ‘Knife is a decent
size. Kitchen knife.’
She watched as he pulled a case from his pocket. Opening it, he
picked out a thermometer and measured the temperature in the room,
before taking a couple of readings from the victim. He pulled out a
notepad and did some calculations.
‘When?’ asked Zoe.
‘Between ten-thirty and eleven-thirty this morning. I’ll be able
to pinpoint it at the autopsy tonight.’
Zoe made a note. It was now almost one-thirty. The killer might
have a three-hour head start.
Picking up one of the victim’s hands, Oliver pulled his mask
aside and sniffed.
‘What?’ asked Zoe.
‘Bleach,’ answered Oliver, without looking up. He turned the
hand, looking under the fingernails.
‘Fuck,’ said Zoe.
‘Exactly.’ Oliver turned towards Jenny. ‘If your team finds a

— Великий ніж, кухонний.
Він дістав футляр з термометром із кишені, щоб виміряти
температуру у кімнаті перед тим, як перейти до виміру
температури жертви. Потім дістав блокнот і провів підрахунки.
— Коли? – запитала Зої.
— Між о пів на одинадцяту та о пів на дванадцяту ранку.
Точно можна буде сказати лише після розтину.
Зої зробила примітку. Вже була тринадцята тридцять. У
вбивці було півтори години, щоб втекти.
Піднявши одну із рук жертви, Олівер посунув маску і
понюхав її.
— Що там? – запитала Зої.
— Відбілювач, – відповів Олівер, не піднімаючи погляду.
Він перевернув руку жертви, оглядаючи нігті.
— От дідько.
— Ти права, – Олівер повернувся до Дженні. – Якщо

Jenny nodded. ‘Will do.’
Oliver let out a small groan as he stood up, his knees creaking.
‘Okay, I’m done. Tonight at eight work for you?’
‘It’s a date,’ said Zoe.
Oliver nodded. ‘Right, I’m off. See you then.’
Zoe walked to the corner of the room, her plastic booties
scrunching on the wooden floorboards. She crouched down and
watched as the officer with the video camera walked towards the
back of the house, recording.
Thirty seconds later she came out.
‘There are drops of blood leading into a bathroom. No nail
brush that I could see. Bathroom’s clean though. Heavy smell of
bleach and there’s a mop and bucket next to the toilet.’
‘The killer knew they had time,’ said Zoe. ‘Flushed away
evidence. Can we check for prints on the buttons on the toilet?’
‘No problem.’
From above, she heard an intake of breath.
1.30 PM
SUNDAY 2 FEBRUARY
Zoe looked up to see Charlie standing in the doorway, staring at
the body, his face pale. At six foot two, Charlie had a good four
inches on Zoe and was lean, with close-cropped blond hair. He
looked every part the poster-boy homicide detective until he was
near a body. After nine months in the squad, he still saw every new
murder scene as though it were his first. She thought he might have
toughened up while she’d been away. You haven’t even seen a truly
horrifying one yet.
‘You okay?’ Zoe asked, standing up.

дерев’яній поверхні. Вона стояла там, дивлячись, як офіцер з
відеокамерою переходить у іншу частину будинку для зйомки.
Через тридцять секунд вона повернулась.
— Сліди крові ведуть у туалет. Щіточки я не знайшла, але
там дуже чисто. Дуже сильно пахне відбілювачем, а поруч з
унітазом стоїть відро з ганчіркою.
— Вбивця знав, що у нього є час. Він встиг змити всі
докази. Перевіримо відбитки пальців на кнопці зливу?
— Без проблем.
Вона почула глибокий вдих.

НЕДІЛЯ, 2 ЛЮТОГО
У дверях стояв зблідлий Чарлі і дивився на тіло. Зростом під
метр дев’яносто, він був вищим за Зої на голову, худорлявий і зі
світлим коротким волоссям. Він виглядав, як типовий детектив з
обкладинки, поки не наближався до справжнього тіла. За дев’ять
місяців Чарлі так і не звик до такої картини. Зої чомусь думала,
що за час, коли її не було, його нерви стали міцнішими. Тим
паче, дійсно страшних випадків Чарлі ще ні разу не бачив.
– Все добре? – піднімаючись, запитала Зої.

 ‘Yeah, all good,’ said Charlie, his voice a pitch higher than
usual.
‘Any signs of forced entry?’
Charlie turned.
‘No, I did a visual on the front and back doors. Neither has
been forced. Windows are all shut.’
‘Our secondary team here yet?’
‘Yeah, Angus and Hannah are outside interviewing the
neighbours and gawkers.’
‘Good,’ said Zoe, glad to be teaming up with Hannah Nguyen
and Angus Batch on her first case back. They’d be on board for at
least forty-eight hours. For most cases that would be enough time to
have someone charged.
‘These morning murders are always different,’ Zoe said.
‘They’re more likely to be well planned, clinical.’
‘Domestic?’ Charlie asked, his eyes again fixed on the body.
‘Maybe,’ said Zoe. ‘This place looks like a bachelor pad,
though. New furniture, but none of it matches. I’d reckon our victim
is recently single.’
Charlie looked at the large window stretching up towards the
cathedral ceiling, and then at the thick marble benchtops. Through a
set of french doors, he could see a large deck with an inground spa.
‘Doesn’t look like any bachelor pad I ever lived in.’
‘Domestic or not,’ said Zoe, ‘I’d bet your next pay cheque that
the victim knew his killer. This is no break and enter gone wrong.’
The rug lay straight on the floor in front of the victim. The
coasters were stacked on the coffee table.
‘The victim is near the back of the house and there’s no
disturbance until here,’ she said, pointing to the area around the
body.
‘Small gash in the back of the head,’ said Jenny, beside the
victim. ‘A piece of glass. Looks like he was caught in a surprise

Чарлі подивився вгору, на величезне вікно, що тягнулось аж
до високої стелі, а потім на мармурове покриття кухні. Через
скляні двері виднілась величезна вбудована в мармур ванна.
– Не схоже на барлоги, в яких мені доводилось жити.
– Побутове або ні, я впевнена, що жертва знала вбивцю.
Немає слідів злому, тож його просто впустили.
Килимок лежав на підлозі перед тілом, на скляному столику
мирно лежали підставки під гаряче.
– Тіло лежить у глибині будинку, а до цієї зони, здається,
нічого не чіпали.
– На потилиці жертви рана, – раптом мовила Дженні. – В ній
шматок скла. Здається, він злякався раптової атаки і вдарився об

‘He probably hit his head twice in the struggle,’ Zoe said. ‘With
the first hit he shattered the mirror; with the second, the shard was
embedded in his head.’ Zoe mimicked the action, before turning to
Charlie. ‘You got details on the victim?’
Charlie opened his folder.
‘Yeah. Wallet was on the sideboard next to the front door.
Mobile phone’s there too. His name is Ray Carlson. Thirty-nine.
Apparently he’s a local. Grew up in Sorrento.’
‘Not far from here, then.’
‘Yeah,’ said Charlie, ‘and you were right about him being
recently single. Separated, no kids.’
‘That’s a lot of information from a wallet,’ said Zoe.
Charlie smirked.
‘I asked a couple of the local uniforms outside. One of them
knew him from the footy club.’
‘How well?’
‘Enough to say g’day. Said he was a friend of a friend.’
‘We know what Ray did for a living?’
‘Yeah, he works…worked…at a winery up at Red Hill.’
‘Did he own it?’ asked Zoe, looking around the room again.
‘No. Apparently he managed the cellar.’
‘Any form?’
‘No. I ran his name through the system. Zilch.’
‘Wallet still full?’
‘About two hundred in cash and credit cards are still there.’
‘You’re from down this way, aren’t you?’ asked Zoe.
‘Kind of. I grew up in Mornington,’ said Charlie, pointing
vaguely over his shoulder. ‘Far more middle class than here.’
‘Who found him?’

Zoe pushed a loose strand of hair back with her left hand.
‘Right. Where’s Dwayne now?’
‘Outside. Sitting in the shade, talking to the local sergeant.’
‘That his ute in the driveway?’ asked Zoe.
Charlie nodded, wiggling his pen between his fingers. Zoe
watched the pen.
‘Ask one of the forensics team to open up the garage and see if
the victim’s car is still there. I can’t see car keys anywhere. The
killer may have taken it.’
‘Will do,’ said Charlie.
Zoe stood up and made her way back down the hallway,
squinting as she walked out into the glare. She looked back at the
house as she pulled off her face mask, and removed the plastic
booties from her shoes. The house was modern; its large windows
were framed by angled, polished concrete, intersecting with sheets of
corten steel, which gave a rust-like finish. The grass in the front yard
was lush under foot. She sighed, not seeing any CCTV cameras
under the roof line, and put on her sunglasses. Charlie came out a
moment later.
‘There’s a new Ford Ranger in the garage. All the bells and
whistles. Key’s on the passenger seat. Called the rego in. It’s
Carlson’s. The only vehicle registered in his name. How much, you
reckon?’ asked Charlie, gesturing at the house.
Zoe gave the smallest of grins, remembering their old game.
When Charlie was first partnered with Zoe, he and his girlfriend
were looking for a house to buy and every job gave him a chance to
check out the real estate.
‘Around here, over three million, maybe four,’ she said. ‘Less
now it’s a murder scene, though.’
‘You’d need to either be lucky or ruthless to afford to live

‘That counts us out then,’ Zoe said.
She looked across to where a golden retriever was lying in the
shade of a tree. The dog wore a harness that read ‘Victoria Police
Service Dog’, with a blue and white checkerboard strip that matched
the police tape sealing off the area. A special exemption had been
made for Zoe to get Harry, but only after her boss kicked up a fuss
and the Commissioner’s office finally relented. The dog sat up when
he saw Zoe, alert and ready. She put up her hand, palm out, and he
slumped back down on the grass.
A local uniformed sergeant walked across to them, his face a
hotchpotch of wrinkles and sunspots.
‘Terry Gunny,’ he said, his hand outstretched.
‘Zoe Mayer and Charlie Shaw,’ she replied, shaking his hand.
‘Yep, I recognise you from the news,’ Terry said.
Zoe blushed as Charlie darted a look at her.
‘That Dwayne Harley?’ she asked, pointing at a man sitting on a
low rock wall near the garage.
‘Yeah, that’s him,’ said Terry. ‘He seemed pretty freaked out
when the first units arrived. He’s calmed down a bit since then.’
‘Has he said anything that’d be useful for us?’ asked Charlie.
‘Nah, nothing. Sorry.’
‘Did you know the victim?’ Zoe asked.
‘No, Ray Carlson wasn’t on our radar. Nothing on the system
when I ran his name.’
‘What about his mate Dwayne?’
‘Same. I’ve seen him about once or twice, but I ran his name as
well. He’s clean.’
Zoe looked across at the spectators. The younger ones stood on
the baking road, hopping from foot to foot. The older ones were on
the grass on the far side of the road, whispering to each other. Zoe

could see were gawkers.
Hannah and Angus were off to the back, talking to people and
making notes. They would ask everyone the same questions: Do you
know the victim? Did you see anything suspicious? Hear anything?
They would be scanning faces for signs of nervousness. Sometimes a
killer would come back to oversee the action.
Zoe turned back to Terry.
‘You had any serious crimes around here recently? Anything
involving weapons? High levels of violence?’
Terry shook his head.
‘Nah, nothing. Had a non-fatal stabbing in Rosebud last year,
but the junkie gave himself up two days later. He’s in prison now.
Most of what we deal with is traffic-related, or people drinking too
much at the pub and fighting. Occasionally we get a break and enter
of someone’s shed. Almost every house at this end of the peninsula
has a monitored alarm system, so the crooks go elsewhere.’ Zoe
remembered the pulsing green light of the alarm system when she
had first entered the house.
‘Makes sense,’ she replied. Over Terry’s shoulder, Zoe saw the
media arriving and unloading equipment. Beyond their vans, she
noticed a dark blue Toyota Camry. She pointed at it. ‘You got any
local detectives here? That looks like a CI car.’
Terry squinted down the road.
‘No, not one of ours.’
‘Okay, thanks Terry. I reckon we’ve got it from here.’
‘No worries,’ he said, wandering back towards the police tape.
Zoe turned to Charlie. ‘Oliver gauged the preliminary time of
death to be between ten-thirty and eleven-thirty. Tell Hannah and
Angus. They can be more specific in their questioning.’
Charlie set off in their direction.

 Zoe walked across to where Dwayne Harley was sitting, staring
at his hands. She crouched in front of him.
‘Dwayne, I’m Detective Sergeant Zoe Mayer, from Homicide.’
Dwayne lifted his head, but didn’t meet her gaze, staring
vacantly towards the fence across the yard. Like the victim, he had a
tanned complexion. His dark hair was cut short and Zoe could see
his lean muscles under his tank top and board shorts. There seemed
to be no scratches or bruises on his body.
‘Hey,’ he said meekly, barely a whisper.
‘You want some water or something?’
‘No, I’m okay. The other copper gave me some.’
Charlie approached. Zoe pointed over her shoulder with her pen,
keeping her eyes on Dwayne.
‘This is Detective Senior Constable Charlie Shaw. So, what
happened here today?’ she asked, keeping her voice soft and
sympathetic. She let her gaze fall to Dwayne’s hands, looking for
fresh cuts or dried blood around his fingernails or in the creases of
his knuckles. They were clean. She saw sand caught in the hairs on
his forearm. Dwayne sucked in a breath.
‘Me and Ray were supposed to go surfing this morning. He was
a no-show, so after maybe an hour I came into shore and tried to call
him a few times, but he didn’t answer.’ Zoe looked up at Charlie,
who was writing notes. He nodded.
‘What time was that?’ asked Zoe.
‘Dunno, probably about a quarter past eleven? It was weird,
because he always answers, so I drove up here and… found him. I
stood there for a bit, kinda in shock. He looked like a wax model. I
thought he was playing a joke. Kept expecting he’d sit up and yell
“Boo.”’
Zoe leaned forward, breathing in deeply, as if considering her
next question. She smelled no trace of bleach.
‘What time did you arrive?’

 ‘It was about eleven-thirty by the time I’d got changed, tied
down the board and driven up here. The surf beach is just around the
corner.’
Zoe pursed her lips. She knew that the same mobile phone tower
would service the beach and the house. There’d be no way to verify
Dwayne’s whereabouts through tower pings.
‘That your ute?’ Zoe asked, pointing at the new Toyota Hilux
in the driveway. It had a surfboard in the back.
‘Yeah.’
There was sand on the end of the surfboard. Zoe turned back to
Dwayne.
‘Did you touch the body? Check if your friend was still alive?’
Dwayne blinked and shook his head.
‘No…I didn’t. The other copper asked me the same thing. There
was too much blood and he wasn’t breathing. Fuck, I couldn’t do
anything… He was already dead,’ he said, exasperated. ‘If I could
have helped him, I would’ve.’
Dwayne started to breathe heavily, raising his fingers to his
face.
Zoe put up a reassuring hand. ‘I understand, Dwayne. What did
you do after that?’
‘I came out the front and called triple zero. The first coppers
arrived about five minutes later and I’ve been sitting here ever
since.’
‘You have your phone on you now?’
‘Yeah…why?’ Dwayne said, reaching into his pocket.
‘Just want to have a look at the phone log so we can add your
calls into the timeline.’
Dwayne pulled out his phone, punched in a code, and handed it
to Charlie.
‘So, were you and Ray friends for a long time?’ Zoe continued.
‘Ever since I can remember. Went to Sorrento primary together,

Charlie sat down beside Dwayne on the rock wall. Zoe walked
to her car and opened the back door. She took out a bowl and water
bottle and went over to where Harry was sitting, his tail sweeping
across the grass. She filled his bowl. As Harry drank, Zoe looked
down the street. The blue Camry was gone.
She glanced at the properties beside Carlson’s house. The one
on the left had an Audi in the driveway and some bicycles strewn
across the yard. The other looked vacant, with window shutters
closed and grass that was a week overdue for a mow. Probably
someone’s holiday house, she thought.
The media were milling together in the shade. She could see six
TV crews, reporters from a couple of radio stations and the crime
beat journos from the major Melbourne papers. There were a couple
of people she didn’t recognise, who she supposed were from local
media. She waved for them to come over.
As everyone was getting set up, Zoe waited impatiently. The
sun was burning and she wanted to get her jacket off as soon as
possible.
3.30 PM
SUNDAY 2 FEBRUARY
Zoe’s gaze travelled up the red lacquered door. It was at least
twelve feet high. Around it, the front of the house, all glass and steel,
rose like the bow of a ship out over her head. It made Zoe uneasy, as
if the house were about to run her down. Harry sat quietly, his eyes
on her.The house was in a quiet cul-de-sac running off Point Nepean
Road in Sorrento, and set back deep on the block. Charlie stood

behind them on the paved path that cut through the garden of
succulents. There was a platinum BMW convertible in the driveway.
‘An 8 series. That’s serious money.’
Zoe knocked once.
The red door immediately swung open. ‘Hello,’ said a woman,
stretching the word out. She was tall, in her late thirties, with short
blonde hair, and wore a clinging blue summer dress that showcased
her cleavage. She was wiping her hands with a kitchen towel.
‘Ms Carlson?’ asked Zoe, holding up her badge.
‘Hello, I was wondering when you’d arrive,’ she said breezily,
without looking at the badge. ‘Come on in. I’m just cooking.’
Behind her, a white shih tzu barked angrily as he ran back and
forth behind her legs, the noise echoing in the atrium-like foyer.
Harry tilted his head, staring impassively at the smaller dog.
‘Quieten down, Bobo. Bring your dog—mine will be good. I
like his little vest.’ The woman pointed at Harry as she bent down to
pick up her dog, who stopped barking. ‘Service dog, eh? I’ve never
seen a police service dog before,’ she said, already walking back
through the house.
‘He’s new,’ said Zoe, giving Charlie a sideways glance, not sure
how to interpret the upbeat manner. Two detectives arriving
unannounced usually provoked anxiety. This woman was acting as if
a neighbour had stopped by. As they entered, Harry darted around
Charlie, coming up close alongside Zoe.
‘Cup of tea? It’s Donna, by the way.’ They entered an open
living area.
The smell of a freshly baked cake filled the air. Floor to ceiling
windows gave them a view of an infinity pool, which met the waters
of Port Phillip Bay. They could see north around the arc of the
peninsula towards the city in the distance.
‘Thank you, but no,’ said Zoe.
Charlie shook his head, still staring out over the bay.

‘Those hoons. I don’t care what judge or surgeon raised them,
they shouldn’t be screaming around the streets in their parents’
Porsches at two in the morning.’
Zoe put up a hand.
‘Ms Carlson, Donna, that’s not why we’re here.’
‘Oh, sorry. I made a complaint to the local station and
thought…So, why are you here?’
Donna sat at the dining-room table, indicating chairs for them.
‘Ms Carlson, my name’s Zoe Mayer and this is Charlie Shaw.
We’re from Homicide and we have some bad news for you.’ Zoe
waited a beat. ‘Ray Carlson was found dead this morning at his
home.’
Donna looked directly at Zoe. A few seconds passed. She shut
her eyes until she was almost squinting.
‘What… What do you mean?’ she asked.
‘He was murdered,’ said Zoe, her tone neutral.
Donna said nothing, clear-eyed, before shaking her head twice
and staring out towards the bay. Again Zoe waited.
‘When did the two of you separate?’ asked Zoe.
Donna took a breath.
‘About eight or nine months ago. It was winter. June. Yes, it
was at the end of June.’
‘Who instigated the separation?’
‘I suppose it was me, although we’d both been unhappy for a
while.’
‘Do you know if Ray had a problem with anyone?’
‘No. Ray’s just a big kid at heart…Murdered? I can’t believe it.
Are you sure?’ Donna shook her head, blinking. Zoe could see her
eyes growing moist. She noted that Donna hadn’t asked her how Ray
had been killed.

‘In Rosebud with my sister. At the shopping centre. She lives
down there.’ She waved a finger towards the window.
‘What time was that?’
Donna paused a moment, as if collecting her thoughts.
‘I left home around quarter past nine. Arrived just before nine-
thirty, I’d say. We shopped for a while and then had coffee. Hold
on…’ Donna grabbed her handbag and retrieved her purse. She
searched through it before pulling out a receipt and handing it to
Zoe. It was for a dress bought at 9.58 am for ninety-eight dollars.
Zoe turned on her phone, photographed the receipt and gave it back
to Donna.
‘Bought it for my sister. She doesn’t have many nice clothes.’
‘What time did you leave Rosebud?’
‘About eleven-thirty, I think.’
‘Did you come straight home?’
‘Yes, why?’
‘Have you been to Latham Drive in Portsea today?’
‘To Ray’s place? No.’
‘But you’ve been there, yes?’
‘Only once, and not inside. We had a…a disagreement…
outside his place a month back.’
‘What about?’
Donna closed her eyes, before shaking her head.
‘Money. He was supposed to put some money in my account
and hadn’t. Wasn’t a big deal. He sorted it that night.’
‘Does he own the house?’
‘No, he rented it when we split.’
‘Does Ray have any enemies you know of?’
‘No. No one,’ Donna said.
‘Owe anyone money?’
‘Not that I know of.’

‘Well, Ray worked at a winery and the house he was living in
would’ve cost a small fortune to rent. Plus, this place is pretty fancy
and there’s a new BMW out front…’
‘He is… was… the logistics manager. Plus, we were careful
with money.’ Donna adopted a lofty tone. ‘You can save a lot that
way.’
‘Right,’ said Zoe, unconvinced. ‘So, why did you and Ray split
up?’
‘We just grew apart. He wanted to go surfing all the time. I
wanted a more grown-up life, a normal life. Ray was like a teenager
in a lot of ways. I never wanted kids and I certainly didn’t want to be
married to one.’ Donna paused. ‘Sorry, that sounded awful. Bad
habit.’
Zoe wanted to catch Donna off guard.
‘Did you have anything to do with Ray’s death?’
Donna’s head jerked back.
‘What? No, no, I didn’t. How dare you!’
‘Who did then?’
‘How would I know? ‘I don’t have the faintest idea.’
‘We would like to have a look at your phone,’ Zoe said.
‘What? Why?’
‘We need to eliminate those closest to him as suspects. It’s
easier if we look at the phone with your permission rather than
wasting time getting a warrant.’
Donna made a show of thinking it through.
‘Unless there’s something you’re not telling us,’ added Zoe, one
eyebrow raised.
Donna got up and walked to the kitchen bench. She picked up
her phone and punched in some numbers as she walked back to the

Charlie moved in close as Zoe scrolled through the log.
‘Who’s Brenda?’ asked Zoe. The number had been called earlier
that day and twice on Saturday.
‘My sister, the one I met with this morning.’
‘Okay,’ said Zoe.
All the other numbers had female names attached to them.
Charlie wrote down the names and numbers.
Donna pouted.
‘This going to take long? I need to call his parents.’
‘Not too long,’ said Zoe.
Donna rolled her eyes, crossed her arms and looked out over the
bay again.
Zoe opened Donna’s text messages. She and Charlie read them
together. There were exchanges with about ten people, none of
whom seemed of interest. Charlie noted them in any case. Zoe
passed the phone back across the table.
‘Is that it, then?’ asked Donna.
8 PM
SUNDAY 2 FEBRUARY
Zoe was going over her notes as Charlie drove them down St
Kilda Road past the long shadows of high-rises. Harry slept on his
mat in the back seat.
It was almost sunset but the heat outside was still blistering.
Her phone buzzed. Zoe glanced at the screen before answering.
‘Hi Mum.’
‘Hi darling. Good luck for tomorrow. First day back and all.’

in her mother’s voice.
‘Already started. Picked up a job late this morning.’
‘Goodness, no easing you back in then?’
‘Doesn’t work like that. Sooner the better, I say.’
‘As long as you think you’re ready. How’s Tom? Things still
going well?’
‘Everything’s fine. Listen, Charlie and I are running late to an
autopsy. I’ll give you a ring in a few days, okay?’
There was a pause. Zoe let it run.
‘That’s fine,’ her mother said. ‘Whenever you find some time.’
She ignored the bait.
‘Will do. Love you.’ Zoe ended the call, and looked over her
shoulder at Harry, who was asleep.
‘How’s your mum?’ asked Charlie.
‘She’s all right. Just been fussing over me for the last few
months, that’s all. After everything that happened, she was hoping
I’d pull the pin on police work and make use of my commerce
degree. When that didn’t work, she started trying to fast forward my
personal life into marriage and the maternity ward. In either order.’
‘That something you want?’ Charlie’s eyes were fixed on the
traffic.
‘Marriage. Maybe? One day. Kids, probably not. Reckon I’m
getting a bit old for that.’
‘Hardly. What are you, like thirty-five or something?’
‘Nice one. Thirty-eight at last count,’ said Zoe, grinning.
‘You’d be a good mother, I reckon,’ he said. ‘You’ve got the
right balance of patience and toughness.’
Zoe scoffed.
‘Thanks. I’ll take that as a compliment.’ She wasn’t so sure
about the patience part. ‘I worked the Lamente case when I first

‘I remember that one. I was in uniform then. Three dead kids.
Must have been tough.’
‘It was awful, but that’s not what affected me the most. What
got me was when we finally arrested the guy. He was so normal,
mild-mannered, polite. Completely unremarkable. I remember
thinking that if evil could lurk in plain sight like that, having kids
was too risky. It was like a switch flicked off in my head and I
couldn’t turn it on again.’
Charlie nodded.
‘I can understand that.’
Zoe wished she hadn’t mentioned the Lamente case. It was a
box of memories best left closed.
‘Anyway, Mum would much prefer I was working as an
investment banker.’
‘She was pissed off when you joined the force?’
‘You kidding? She told me I was throwing away a great
education and the chance of a good life.’
Charlie chuckled.
‘Yep, you’d probably have a holiday home in Portsea by now.’
‘And its value would have taken a hit today. Anyway, how’s
Jane?’
‘Not sure. We separated a few months back.’
Zoe shot him a look. ‘Shit, sorry to hear that. I had no idea.’
‘It happened just after you…went on leave. She said I was
obsessed with the job and wasn’t putting any effort into the
relationship.’ He was silent. ‘She was probably right.’
‘What about Alex?’
‘He’s okay. He stays with me every second weekend and I try to
get to his cricket games every week. We chat on the phone every
night before he goes to bed. It’s as good as it can be, under the

It was almost dusk as they approached the Institute of Forensic
Medicine in Southbank, a modern two-storey glass and concrete
affair that also housed the Coroners Court. It was overlooked by a
forest of apartment towers that stretched on towards the city.
Charlie swung the car around, parking beneath the canopy of a
tree on the far side of the road.
‘You want me to stay here with Harry?’ he asked.
‘Thanks,’ said Zoe. ‘Do you mind taking him for a walk around
the block? He’ll need a wee. His lead’s in the back.’
‘No worries,’ Charlie said, opening the passenger door, letting a
blast of heat in.
‘And keep him on the nature strip. The footpath’s too…’
Charlie put up a hand. ‘Hot for his paws, yes, I’ve had a dog
before. And I’ll give him some water when we get back.’
‘Thanks,’ grinned Zoe, as she reluctantly headed for the front door.
As a waft of spice from a nearby Malaysian restaurant caught
her halfway across the road, she realised she hadn’t eaten all day. By
the time she reached the front door, she knew her appetite would
soon be gone. Zoe still hated autopsies. At least she no longer threw
up afterwards. She counted that as a win. Charlie hated them even
more than she did, so walking Harry was a win for him as well.
She showed her badge at the desk, before heading towards one
of the homicide rooms. She took a breath, pushed the door open and
walked into the viewing room, a long, narrow space dominated by a
large window running almost the length of one side. There was a
large television screen at each end. From here she could look down
onto the homicide room.
Through the window, Zoe could see Ray Carlson’s body lying
on a light blue gurney. The top of his head was a metre and a half
from her. A large mobile operating-theatre light was above him. The
room was painted off-white and fitted out with stainless steel

the whole scene would’ve been depressing.
Oliver Nunan was hunched over the victim, starting to cut the
clothing from his body. Next to him was a tall woman Zoe didn’t
recognise. They both wore matching blue hospital scrubs, masks,
wrap-around clear glasses, surgical gloves and pink rubber boots.
‘Evening, Zoe,’ he said through the intercom, without looking
up.
‘Hi Oliver. Sorry I’m late.’
‘No worries. I was just getting started. This is Anna, Dr Anna
Sorgstrom.’
Zoe smiled, nodding hello. Anna was slim and tanned, her
shoulder-length blonde hair pulled into a ponytail.
‘Nice to meet you, Zoe,’ said Anna, smiling. Her accent was
Australian with a splash of Swedish. Zoe decided that Charlie might
become less reluctant about attending autopsies in the future.
‘Anna’s my retirement plan. Succession planning, they call it.’
‘But you’re so young,’ teased Zoe.
Oliver gave a short laugh.
‘Flattery will get you a long way,’ he said.
He continued to cut away Ray’s clothes, placing them into large
bags. Anna took several photos of the knife, still stuck into Ray’s
body just below the ribcage, before Oliver pulled it out with a pair of
forceps and put it on a tray Anna held out for him.
‘DNA and latents,’ he said automatically.
Anna put the tray down, leaning in to stare at the knife from
different angles.
‘What is it?’ asked Zoe.

 Oliver looked up at Zoe, and then at Anna.
‘Looks like gauze to me,’ said Anna. ‘Tiny piece of it came out
with the knife.’
‘What, like a bandage?’ asked Zoe. She knew that the
paramedics hadn’t bothered trying to revive Carlson. ‘There were no
bandages at the scene.’
‘I know,’ said Oliver, straightening.
Zoe shut her eyes.
‘Thoughts?’ asked Oliver, noticing.
‘The killer wore a bandage on their hand so as not to leave
prints on the knife. In the stabbing, the knife caught on the bandage
and tore some threads away.’
‘Why not just wear gloves?’ asked Anna.
‘If you answered the front door to someone wearing latex gloves
on a hot summer’s day, your guard would go up. But a bandage
wouldn’t cause concern. I think the killer was invited in, and
attacked the victim at the back of the house.’
Oliver turned to Anna. ‘See, I told you she was good.’
Zoe felt herself blush. She watched as Oliver made a small
incision above and below the wound, and then hunched over to peer
inside. ‘Have a look at this,’ he said to Zoe. He picked up a device
the shape and size of a pen. He pushed a button on the side and one
of the screens in the viewing room came to life.
Zoe hated it when he did this.
Oliver used a pair of forceps to hold the wound open and
pointed the camera into it. He was looking up at the screen.
‘See how far up and down the wound runs inside the body?’
She nodded, squeamish.
Oliver moved the camera back and forth, illuminating the gash.
‘You okay?’ he asked.
‘Yeah,’ she said. ‘What do you reckon?’

 Oliver stood back from the table. ‘Okay, the knife went into the
torso in an upward motion,’ he said, sweeping his clenched fist in an
arc, ‘and the attacker then pulled the handle sharply upwards,
causing the blade to go down. The attacker would’ve been standing
close to the victim for at least a few seconds. They would’ve got
sprayed with blood. That blade will be razor sharp, mark my words.’
‘So the attacker was at least as tall as the victim, yes?’
Oliver paused. ‘Based on the point of incision and the leverage
required to pull the knife handle upwards — yes. The victim is
around five eleven in the old scale.’
‘About 180 centimetres,’ translated Anna from the end of the
examination table.
‘It looks calculated to me,’ said Zoe. ‘It wasn’t a frenzied event,
with multiple stab wounds. This was meant to kill the victim, but not
instantly. Not like shooting someone in the head. Somebody wanted
Ray Carlson to know he was going to die.’
Zoe looked down at Ray’s ashen face.
Oliver broke the silence.
‘We checked under his nails. Definitely scrubbed clean with a
nail brush or something similar. There’s bleach residue up to his
wrists, consistent with his hands being dipped in a bucket of the
stuff. Did Forensics find a brush at the scene?’
‘No, nothing,’ said Zoe.
‘The only other trauma to the body is the gash in the back of his
head.’
‘From the mirror,’ said Zoe.
Oliver picked up the electric saw.
‘Yes, that’s the one.’

MONDAY 3 FEBRUARY

 The squad room was already buzzing as Zoe and Harry made
their way through the open-plan office towards her desk. Zoe carried
Harry’s dog bed rolled up under one arm. Some colleagues smiled
and waved, while others gave her the thumbs-up. One or two she
didn’t recognise, testament to the burn-out rate of the squad, looked
her up and down, before their gaze fell on the golden retriever at her
side.
Harry looked up at each person’s face as they passed by. The
Homicide office took up a large floor of the Spencer Street police
complex, only a few years old. It hadn’t taken long for the place to
look like an updated version of the old squad’s office though, with
the usual open-plan desks, low partition walls and constant aroma of
coffee and mildly burnt toast.
Along one wall were a couple of offices for senior staff, and
conference rooms. Behind another wall near the lift were interview
rooms, as well as monitoring rooms with banks of TVs and recording
equipment. This office felt like home to Zoe and she was happy to be
back.
‘So, this is really happening then, is it?’ mumbled Iain Gillies,
peering down his nose at the dog walking beside Zoe. In his mid-
forties, Iain was a large man, over six foot three with a jowly face
and greying hair, whose permanent grimace was appropriate to his
personality. Zoe often wondered if he came out of his mother
scowling.
‘Good to see you too, Iain,’ Zoe said. ‘You’re looking well.’
‘Yeah, welcome back, Mayer.’ Iain grunted as he slumped back
into his chair, his belly bulging against his shirt buttons.
Hannah Nguyen walked over and stroked Harry’s head. A
detective sergeant like Zoe, Hannah was a tough character, unwilling
to take a backward step whenever challenged. Although shorter than
the rest of the squad, Hannah was lean and strong, with dark wavy,
shoulder-length hair. She wore dark pants and a sleeveless white

‘Hey gorgeous,’ she said as Harry pulled his mouth back into a
smile, his tongue rolling out to the side. ‘Hi Zoe, sorry. Got
distracted by your handsome new partner. I didn’t get a chance to
meet him properly yesterday.’
‘His name’s Harry,’ said Zoe.
‘Suits him. He’s a sweetie. Good to have a handsome man about
the squad for once.’
Charlie rolled his chair back.
‘Thanks,’ he said, in mock offence.
‘Someone’s not happy about a little competition,’ teased
Hannah.
‘You and Angus good for an update?’ asked Zoe.
‘Yeah, for sure. I’ll grab him.’
Zoe unrolled the dog bed under her desk. Harry lay down on it
like it had always been there. Zoe sat and leaned back to speak to
Charlie around the partition.
‘Where’s the floater who was covering for me?’
‘Gone,’ said Charlie. ‘She headed back to Armed Crime last
Friday when it was confirmed you were coming back. She couldn’t
get out of here fast enough.’ He chuckled. ‘Said she’d transferred out
of Homicide years ago for a reason and the reason was still valid.’
‘What about the case load?’ asked Zoe.
‘Manageable,’ said Charlie. ‘I’ve got two other jobs open, plus
the Portsea job we picked up yesterday.’
‘You’ll have to catch me up on the other two.’
‘Both under control. I’ve got a guy in custody for a meth-rage
killing and I’m wrapping up witness statements and paperwork. The
other one’s a suspected DV homicide in Toorak. Wife found dead at
the base of the stairs in a mansion. The husband reckons his wife
tripped. I’m trying to locate a possible witness who is apparently
skiing in Canada somewhere and won’t be back for a week or so. I’m

Zoe raised an eyebrow. What the fuck?
Hannah and Angus walked over, wheeling chairs behind them,
and sat down. A foot taller than Hannah, Angus Batch had a
chiselled jawline and a buzz cut. The first few buttons of his shirt
always seemed to be open, allowing the world a glimpse of his
hairless chest.
‘Learn anything from canvassing the neighbours?’ asked Zoe.
‘Not much,’ said Hannah. ‘We interviewed all the gawkers at
the scene, plus the other houses in the street that you and Charlie
didn’t cover, as well as the neighbours over the victim’s back fence.
No one noticed anything strange yesterday or even knew the victim
at all, beyond a wave if they crossed paths. Only two people knew
his first name. Consensus was that Ray Carlson kept long hours,
usually leaving home around seven every morning and often not
getting home until after eleven. They said he lived quietly. No loud
music or parties. No domestics or disturbances. Anything to add,
Angus?’
Angus shook his head.
‘Nothing much. One of the houses had CCTV pointed down
their driveway. Picked up three passing cars around the time of the
murder. Two of them we confirmed as belonging to elderly
neighbours. We spoke to them and they’re out of the picture. And the
third…’
‘Yes, the image you emailed us last night,’ said Zoe. ‘You got
that printout, Charlie?’
He passed it to her.
‘The dark blue Toyota Camry.’
In the photo, the driver was a blurry figure in a hat. They
couldn’t see the number plate.

 ‘Charlie, any luck getting this enhanced?’
‘That is the enhanced version. Not much use, I’m afraid.’
‘What time was this?’ Zoe said, looking at Angus.
‘Ten-forty am.’
‘Did you get footage of the Camry leaving?’
‘Yeah,’ said Angus, consulting his folder. ‘It was 11.20 am.’ He
pulled out another photograph.
Zoe stared at the image.
‘Thing is, though, I reckon this car was parked down the street
when we were there. Wasn’t there when we arrived, but I saw it
before we spoke to Dwayne Harley, the guy who found the victim.
Not the type of car you usually see parked in a Portsea street.’
‘So, what? He killed the guy and came back later to watch?’
asked Charlie.
‘Yes, it happens sometimes,’ said Hannah. ‘The cocky ones who
think they’re smarter than us.’
In her peripheral vision, Zoe noticed the squad’s detective
inspector, Rob Loretti, walk over and lean against a desk behind
where Charlie sat. Rob was Zoe’s former partner, who had been
promoted to detective inspector in charge of Homicide the year
before. In his mid-fifties, Rob was a smart, instinctual detective with
a high strike rate for solving cases quickly. He was also the only
openly gay head of department that Zoe knew of in the whole of the
force. Zoe gave him a nod and turned back to Charlie.
‘What time did we arrive there yesterday, Charlie?’
‘Quarter after one, or thereabouts.’
Zoe looked across at Angus.
‘Can you revisit the CCTV footage and see if our Camry
reappears? Check after 1 pm. If the same person came back we
might get a better shot of them.’
‘Will do.’
‘Okay,’ said Zoe, ‘here’s what we know. Victim is Ray Carlson.

‘Anything distinctive about the weapon?’ asked Hannah.
‘Large kitchen knife,’ answered Zoe. ‘Brand is Shabon. Higher-
end, but common enough. I’ve got one at home. We’re not sure if the
weapon came from the house or was brought to the scene. I assume
the killer brought it, as it looks planned. Autopsy showed that the
attacker thrust the knife upwards into the body and then sliced down
inside.’ Zoe mimicked the action for effect.
‘Yikes. Sounds personal,’ said Rob in the background.
‘We thought the same thing,’ said Zoe. ‘There were no prints on
the knife, but they found a piece of gauze caught in the base of the
blade. I suspect that the killer wore a bandage on his hand to stop
leaving prints.’
‘Any DNA traces?’ asked Angus.
Zoe shook her head.
‘Still waiting to hear about the knife, but it looks like the
victim’s hands were dunked in bleach after he died and the
fingernails were scrubbed clean. The bathroom reeks of bleach and
there was an empty mop and bucket sitting by the toilet.’
‘Professional job. Flushed the evidence away,’ said Hannah,
almost to herself.
‘Yeah,’ said Zoe. ‘Perhaps the killer wanted to change clothes.
The bathroom’s spotless. Not a fingerprint anywhere. Whoever it
was had time to clean up.’
‘Any attempt to clean up around the body?’ asked Rob.
‘No, just in the bathroom,’ said Zoe. ‘Nothing seems to be missing
from the house. Wallet and phone were on the side table next to the
front door, and his car is in the garage with the keys inside. Last
night’s autopsy confirmed he was killed between 10.45 and 11.15am.

‘She is also flush, by the looks of it,’ added Charlie. ‘Views of

2.1 Book description

‘The Long Game’ is a detective story written by a bestselling Australian crime mystery
author Simon Rowell. It was originally published on August 3, 2021 under the auspices of the Text
Publishing Company in Australia.
The book reveals to the reader the fine point of the murder investigation, looks like a scene
of an episode of a television crime drama. This is an interesting story about the work of police
officers with fairly predictable episodes and an unexpected ending.
Basing on criminology, the author aims at transmitting humanistic idea for the readers.
Crime has become the main theme of the book because it has long become one of the most terrible
ulcers of the human way of life. The whole history of mankind is a history of gradual but steady
growth of crime, which is developing today at a particularly rapid pace. This book is interplay
between culture, morality and truth.
One of the best classic detective stories is ‘The Long Game’ by Simon Rowell. This is a
complex story with a dynamic plot and intriguing events. The author has a peculiar style of the
story, so the reader can easily understand the author's thought and read the story to the end. At the
beginning of the book there is not much action, but the plot gradually unfolds, keeps you in
suspense and surprises at the end. An unexpected turn of events encourages the reader to test his
own intuition.
‘The Long Game’ is an exciting police detective story. The main character Zoe holds an
inquiry, using all her skills, cunning and intuition to achieve justice. Charlie helps her, but he does
not always agree with her methods. Simon Rowell, using different techniques for writing detective
stories, keeps the intrigue to the end and surprises with an unexpected ending.
Style of the text: narrative, intrigued storytelling.
Functions of the text: informative, entertainment, aesthetic.
Target audience: lovers of defective stories.
‘The Long Game’ is worth to read just because it's the best detective story with colorful
characters, interesting stories, and a mind-boggling clue. With this story, Rowell outdid himself and
many of his competitors.

2.2 Text characteristics

We translated the prologue and a few chapters of the book “The Long Game” written by
Simon Rowell. As well as the book in general, these chapters belong to the detective genre. It is
written in compliance with all rules that are typical for this genre.
Detective is a kind of adventure literature. These are primarily literary works, the external plot
of which consistently reveals a confusing mystery related to the crime and its investigation
(Taranova 2007, p.231-233)
Each detective is built according to a simple scheme: one of the characters commits a crime,
then an investigation is conducted and the main character solves the mystery. Everything happens in
the form of a chain of events that accompany dramatic actions. The number of options is minimal.
The choice of plot is much more interesting. There is a place for fantasy to roam: many
options for committing a crime and the place where it happened, different motives for the crime and
the choice of the specifics of the detective. The plot should demonstrate the author's position, if the
intrigue itself is non-ideological. It cannot be perceived as a formal concept (Danyté, 2011).
Intrigue and plot should be closely related and harmoniously fit into the detective story. This
affects the plot possibilities and the exclusivity of life content. The plot of the detective coincides
with the sequential course of events and leads to the logical construction of a criminal mystery. In

any case, the form is subject to the ideological content, because it arises on the basis of the idea of a
bourgeois world order and the construction of a highly moral society.
The Ukrainian literary scholar A.O Taranova has identified the main features of the detective
genre (Taranova 2007, p.231-233):
1. Having a mystery to solve
This is not a simple lack of information, but a puzzle that has a solution. At the end of the
detective story, we need to find answers to all questions and solve all the puzzles. However, there
are stories when the criminal is exposed already on the first page of the book. This is what the Iris
Press publishing house did, placing the image of the criminal on the cover. The reader knows who
is the artist and who is the girl in the picture from the very beginning of the book.
The value of a detective is that the intrigue lasts almost to the last page. A fascinating story
makes us read page after page to quickly find out who the main villain is. If the answer is clear
immediately, then the reader loses the pleasure of reading the book. That's why this publisher made
a glaring mistake.
The plot of a detective story should require the reader to think logically, fantasize and desire
to figure out the mystery himself. The ideal detective story is one where the reader understands
what the mystery is and gets enough information to solve it. But this should not be a direct answer
to the question ‘What happened and who is to blame?’. It is better to submit information in the form
of encrypted text. This condition is always observed in classic detective stories. In the translation of
the text, this information should not change so that the reader can understand what the riddle is.
In the book Zoe has all the necessary information about the events that took place, and the
reader receives complete information about the actions of the characters. As a result, the reader has
his own clues, even if the detective has found answers to the main questions. When all the puzzles
are completed, the reader sees the full picture of what happened.
2. Using situations from ordinary life
The reader should be familiar with what each of the characters does, their motives, habits,
rules of behavior in society. Otherwise, the life of the heroes will seem strange and unrealistic. For
example, if the reader does not know how people lived in the early twentieth century, it will be
difficult for him to understand some of the cultural and extralinguistic aspects of Simon Rowell's
book.
In the last hundred years, the worldview of people has changed a lot. In addition, it is difficult
for the Ukrainian reader to understand the cultural characteristics of England in the first half of the
20th century. The translator must take these nuances into account in his work in order to achieve a
better understanding of the author's thought. He may use descriptive translation, generalization, or
his own notes.
3. Creating a plot in accordance with the unwritten rules of detective stories
Thanks to these rules, the author creates a story that we want to read to the end. An
experienced reader knows these laws and will be able to distinguish a good detective from a bad
one. He will perceive the violation of these rules as the fraud of the author. For example, some
heroes a priori cannot be criminals. Milda Danyté (2011) is sure that the narrator, the detective, the
relatives of the victims and the clergy cannot be the killer. If it is clear with the first two characters,
then others can play the role of criminals if the author openly declares this along the story. Then the
reader will pay attention to them from the first pages.
4. In the detective, random errors are excluded
A detective's specialty is that they cannot be accidental errors. They tell the pure truth or
deliberately mislead the reader. ‘The Long Game’ is an exception. Everything happens after the
investigation is completed, 16 years later. The main character Zoe explores the psychological
aspects of this story.
The detective believes that the human brain works in such a way that over time, all
unnecessary information is eliminated and only really important information remains. Indeed, the
respondents were able to remember only significant facts. However, there were errors in the
testimonies of the witnesses.

 A special line of a good detective story is ambivalence, compositional and semantic duality.
The main goal is to evoke conflicting emotions in the reader. So the plot about a crime is built
according to the rules of a dramatic story, where the main element is murder.
In a crime novel, all actions have a causal relationship. The plot is built in the form of a
puzzle, a task that the reader must solve, having all the necessary information. The game character
allows us to adapt information to our psyche. So the mystery and intrigue that the story radiates
emotionally affect the reader, giving the necessary impulses and signals. A person learns about the
murder and plunges into the atmosphere of the involvement of all characters in the crime, innuendo
and danger, mystical incomprehensibility.
The scheme for creating a detective is such that two plots are intertwined in it. This is a story
and a problem at the same time. The detective is a fairy tale and a fascinating exploration. Such
ambivalence explains the popularity of detectives in various social circles. The plot is built on
intrigue, the impossibility of solving the problem until the denouement comes (Danyté, 2011).
The detective closely monitors the actions of other heroes, carefully studies all the details and
weaves his own network into which the criminal falls. So the human soul becomes the arena of the
struggle between the detective and the criminal.
As a result of the most subtle observations, a detective investigating a complicated crime
weaves a strong network into which the killer falls. The human soul becomes the arena of the
struggle between the detective and the criminal.
The function of the detective is by no means limited to unraveling the mystery. Detectives
combine the functions of an investigator, a defender, and often a pathologist. They personify the
highest and impartial justice, restore the truth where the law is powerless. For example, Zoe after
the investigation says to the killer:
‘Okay,’ said Zoe, ‘here’s what we know. Victim is Ray Carlson. Thirty nine. Has lived at the
pointy end of the Peninsula his whole life. Separated. No kids. Found by his lifelong friend, Dwayne
Harley. One knife wound only. Knife still in the deceased when we arrived. No sign of a frenzied
attack. Clinical.’ (Rowell 2021, р.45)

When translating works of this genre, it is important to get acquainted with the entire text,
make a pre-translation analysis, isolate segments of the text that carry key information that helps to
reveal secrets, and pay the most attention to these segments.
Summing up, it should be noted that the detective genre is quite serious and self-sufficient
despite the entertaining nature. It makes the reader a real researcher who must include his logic,
imagination and understanding of human psychology. So, in the novels of Simon Rowell, the case
always turns into the punishment of the criminal and the triumph of justice (Danyté, 2011).

2.3 Lexical transformations

One of the most difficult tasks when translating is choosing the right word to convey its
meaning in the translated text. When searching for translation solutions and choosing the best
translation option, a professional translator must have a clear knowledge of the requirements for his
translation activity and the target text. According to V. Prikhodko (2017) the translator is an artist.
She invests in this definition primary phenomenological content (artist as creator), after all, the
work of the translator combines the fine art of reincarnation and the art of reproduction. To translate
means to find a counterpart in the target language, and how to achieve this if there is no
corresponding object, concept or phenomenon in the history of the target language speakers. These
linguistic units are non-equivalent vocabulary because they have no absolute analogues in the
language of translation. These language units mostly denote geographical, ethnographic and socio-
political concepts. Transcription (transliteration), combined renomination, descriptive translation is

used to reproduce non-equivalent vocabulary in the language of translation (Prikhodko, 2017, p.
264-265).
The first lexical feature that is clearly visible in the translation is the transfer of proper
names. In this case, we resorted to the method of transcription and transliteration. Transcription
involves entering text using graphic means of the target language, the corresponding word with the
maximum phonetic approximation of the original phonetic form. With the help of transcription, the
translator overcomes the difficulty of conveying semantic content. One of the main advantages of
transcription is brevity, which in some cases is the main reason for transcription.

Proper names and geographical names are often transmitted using transliteration: the English
pronunciation is transmitted as accurately as possible with the letters of the Ukrainian alphabet. The
translator must reckon with the established tradition regarding historical proper names and
geographical names, as well as characters from world-famous literary works (Korunets 2001, р.64).

When transferring the names of streets, hotels, theaters, as well as the names of newspapers
and magazines, the same principle of transliteration is applied. Forms of polite address are
preserved in translation and transmitted using transliteration: Sir - сер, Mister - містер, Missis –
місіс.
Some of the realia that have been translated through transcription may be incomprehensible
to Ukrainian-speaking readers, but the translator explains the meaning of the words through
footnotes in the text. Transliteration, ie the transfer of letters from one language to the letters of
another, was used by a translator much less often than transcription. It is often the case that these
two transformations are used together (Korunets 2001, р.65).

The transmission of so-called "non-equivalent vocabulary" is a problem requiring special
attention. As mentioned above, this group includes words denoting foreign realities, such as features
of the political system, way of life and customs (Korunets 2001, р.68).
The translator must be very careful when resorting to “semantic adjustment” to convey
“non-equivalent vocabulary” so as not to introduce into the translation a national flavor that is alien
to him (Montes-Granado 2012, p. 125–138). However, the translator must be very attentive and not
to misuse this method, because in this case his translation will be riddled with foreign words.
Borrowing a foreign word by transliteration should be used only in cases where it is impossible to
give a descriptive translation or use a Ukrainian word.
We also used the tracing method and the semi-tracing method, the use of words that consist
partly of elements of the source language and partly of the language of translation.

When translating, we often have to face the fact that the vocabulary of the Ukrainian
language is more specific than its counterparts in English.

 Therefore, in this situation we applied the technique of concretization.
This is especially true of verbs that express speech and movement, for example: say, tell,
get, take, and come.

The translation of extensive linguistic explanations of word-forming and etymological
nature presents certain difficulties when the names of the Australian plants are included in them.
...amid the saltbush and wallaby grass that clung tightly to the dunes. (Rowell 2021, р.17)

In the example below we can observe ethnographic realia. Since “inch” is an ethnographic
realia that denotes the English unit of measurement, we also applied hyponymic translation, which
is part of the domestication strategy.
Twelve inches long, the knife had a series of black dots on its handle, making it easy to grip.

Another issue to consider regarding lexical transformations in translation is the issue of
conformity. Each language has its own typical norms of collaboration. In every language we can
find many new words that people speak and do not violate their norms. One language may have an
array of combinations that will not match the set of words in another. This makes it necessary to
look for equally accepted combinations in the target language (Korunets 2001, р.69).
If the word belongs to a wide semantic field, then it can be more combined with other
words. This, in turn, affords higher possibilities for its transfer in translation and a variety of
translation options.
There are unusual combinations that are difficult to understand. They follow the standard
semantic interoperability model. Such a combination of words that differ in semantic features exists
in all languages. And each will have a different meaning. So it is easy to create unexpected
combinations in English.
The hero also uses in his speech such a technique as a comparison. These elements in the
series are not difficult to translate and are translated literally. Consider examples:
Looks like just the one stab wound,’ he said (Rowell 2021, р.11)

Considering the lexical features of the translation of detective stories, special attention
should be paid to the use of generalization and transformation of concretization. Generalization of
information has the opposite meaning for concretization. This technique is used to replace the
names of own sources with common ones. It helps to obtain an equivalent communicative effect of
the original and the translation (Maksimov 2012, p.117). Everything depends on the type of
semantic structure of words. Any lexical unit is part of the lexical system of language, its
constituent element. This is what explains the features of the semantic structure of words. Similar
semantic units may have different meanings in different languages. In one language, the word is
used constantly, because it has a broad meaning, and in another, it is narrow or even terminological.
A good example is the so-called international words (Baker 2018, p. 96).

 The method of concretization is very popular among translators today. Choosing the right
translation option depends on the context. It is resorted to when there are many incomprehensible
semantic elements in the original text.
The house was in a quiet cul-de-sac running off Point Nepean Road in Sorrento, and set
back deep on the block. (Rowell 2021, р.12)

The method of concretization in the translation of this sentence made it possible to replace
lexical units that are neutral in color in English with more specific in meaning and expressive in
color lexical units in Ukrainian in order to clarify and disclose the position of the author and
provide the desired impact on the end reader.

The English adjective “small”, which translates into Ukrainian as маленький, has a neutral
character and has a more general meaning, in contrast to the English adjective “tiny”. This is
necessary to draw special attention of the reader to the problem that is revealed in this text .
During translation we faced many lexical difficulties. To overcome them, we applied
concretization, as traditional means of translation are powerless here. This allows the translator to
emphasize a particular phrase or convey a play on words from the original language (Munday 2015,
p.47).
… Angus and Hannah are outside interviewing the neighbours and gawkers (Rowell 2021, р. 37)

According to Cambridge dictionary, gawker is defined as “a person who stares flagrantly at
someone or something” (Cambridge Academic Content Dictionary, 2008). It is also worth noting
that in the translation of this sentence we used the colloquial form of the word, namely "зівака".
The use of stylistically colored vocabulary gives the translation a national color that combines the
strategies of domestication and foreignization.
A common cause of lexical transformations is differences in semantic word structures. They
refer to individual words or phrases. In some cases, even words with similar meanings cannot be
called equivalent. This is due to the peculiarities of different languages: their use, compatibility, the
functioning of the word in the language and so on. The basic meaning of a word in the original
language can mean much more than a word in the translated language (Korunets 2001, р.72)

In any language, the word is closely related to the peculiarities of the lexical and semantic
system of the language. It can have different types of lexical meanings, expanding or narrowing its
meaning, making it more specific or abstract. This difference in the semantic volume of the word
also leads to lexical transformations (Andreichuk, Babeliuk 2019).
It is worth emphasizing the role of context in the use of concretization - only it can serve as
a reliable support for the correct choice of a particular word or phrase. Here is an example of the use
of concretization translated from English into Ukrainian.
She told me I was throwing away a great education and the chance of a good life. (Rowell
2021, р.35)

The underlined English word has larger scopes of meaning than its Ukrainian counterpart
and particular semantics of this word is recognized from the context.
Generalization is a technique contradictory to concretization. Generalization is a lexical
translation transformation, as a result of which a word with a narrower meaning being translated is
replaced in translation by a word with a broader meaning. This technique helps the translator to get
out of the difficult situation (Karaban, 2003, p.24).

He said that he and the victim were supposed to be surfing that morning. (Rowell 2021, р.12)

In this example, the we applied permutation as well as generalization of some parts of
speech. After apllying this technique, we expanded the meaning of the term and made it clear to
Ukrainian readers.This made the sentence lucid.
It is known that Ukrainian language is explicit, while English language is implicit. This
difference may force the translator to apply generalization even if the language of translation simply
lacks a language unit with the same content. Sometimes the need for generalization is due to the
stylistic norms of the language of translation and the presence of stable linguistic expressions.
I. Korunets points out that generalization is used to avoid distortion of the content of the text
(Korunets 2001, p.82). Regardless of the reasons for the use of concretization and generalization,
these are techniques without which it is impossible to adequately translate the detective texts.
Another lexical transformation is modulation or semantic development. It occurs when a
word or phrase of the source text replaced by a unit of the target text, the meaning of which can be
deduced logically from the meaning of the original word. Acording to Peter Newmark, modulation
is a translational transformation, during which a word or phrase of the source language is translated
in such a way that a target text demonstrates different point of view, and sometimes even absolutely
different idea (Newmark 1988, p.88).
The method of modulation is described by many researchers, but the views do not always
coincide. For the first time, modulation was defined as a translation concept by Franco-Canadian
researchers J.P. Vine and J. Darbelnet: ‘Modulation is a variation of the message that can be done
by changing the perspective of the subject’(Vinay, Darbelnet 1968). Further, Vinay and Darbelnet
state that there are two kinds of modulation. The first is called fixed or obligatory modulation, while
the second is free modulation (1978). Examples of free modulation in the source text and their
rendition in the target one are provided below:
He took his foot off the accelerator and let the car glide the last thirty metres into the empty
driveway. (Rowell 2021, р.18)
Він відпустив педаль газу і повільно проїхав останні тридцять метрів під’їздної
доріжки.
In this example we can observe free modulation because we applied unique solutions to
reach the highest degree of equivalence in the translation. We obtained the closest equivalent to
make the translation more clear for the target audience.
When her phone had rung, just before lunch, she felt a rush seeing the number on the
screen. (Rowell 2021, р.20)
Коли телефон задзвонив як раз перед обідом, серце її забилось швидше, варто лише
було поглянути на номер на екрані.
While translating this sentence, we used such lexical transformation as modulation in
rendition of the expression felt a rush. In order to justify this decision, the meaning of the given
expression must be considered. Thus, according to Cambridge dictionary, to feel a rush means “to
feel an intense excitement”. In order to convey the meaning properly, we decided to replace this
verb with the Ukrainian collocation “серце її забилось швидше”.
In the example below, the metaphor was translated by modulation, and some shade of
meaning was lost, because it was reduced by the emotional load. Sometimes this method is the
only way to adequately convey the original meaning to the reader.
‘Anna’s my retirement plan. Succession planning, they call it.’ (Rowell 2021, р.41)
Анна замінить мене, коли я піду на пенсію. Планування на майбутнє, я б так сказав.
This expression was also translated by modulation, without any loss of value transfer.
‘If you answered the front door to someone wearing latex gloves on a hot summer’s day,
your guard would go up. (Rowell 2021, р.32)
Якщо ти заявишся до когось у гумових рукавичках в таку спеку, це точно викличе
підозри.

 For the translation of this sentence we also used modulation, as a result of which the
originality of the original phase was lost, but the general value of the message was given.
The squad room was already buzzing as Zoe and Harry made their way through the open-
plan office towards her desk. (Rowell 2021, р.48)
У відділку вже була купа людей, коли Зої з Гаррі пройшли через весь офіс відкритого
типу до свого столу.
Applying modulation in the translation of the source text, we successfully conveyed the
original meaning.
The analysis of the translation did not reveal more than other ways of transmitting lexical
features. We tried to adapt the text more to the Ukrainian-speaking reader, and most often the
equivalents were chosen for the translation, which more accurately convey the author's style.

2.4 Grammatical transformations

When translating text, the translator uses various techniques, such as grammatical
transformation, when one word can be converted into a translation from several words and have a
different meaning. The replacement can be made by any grammatical unit: word form, syntactic
construction, etc.
When working with translations, the main goal will be to ensure that the author's thought is
conveyed as accurately as possible in a language understandable to the reader. Often the main
problems of translation are of a mixed nature, due to the close relationship between grammatical
and lexical means, that is, vocabulary and grammar are interconnected.
It should be taken into account when translating language units: word forms, phrases,
sentences, have their own grammatical properties. The essence of the translated text can be affected
by the lexico-sematic meaning of units, and this, in turn, is the accuracy of conveying the message
to the reader.
Each language belongs to a particular language family, and when studding it one should
consider not only the linguistic features of the language that explain the differences, but also the
similarities between one language and another. So we can see similar grammatical meanings, the
functional meaning of word order, features of nouns, verbs and degrees of comparison of adjectives
in Ukrainian and English belonging to the same Indo-European family (Andreichuk, Babeliuk
2019). However, the principles of constructing grammar are very different; these languages belong
to different grammatical groups.
The English language is characterized by a strict word order, where each language unit must
stand in its place. The peculiarity of Ukrainian is that in a sentence you can change the order of
words, but the essence will remain the same. Unlike the Ukrainian language, the use of inversions is
common in English - a non-standard arrangement of words in a sentence that violates the syntactic
construction in order to emphasize a certain saying. When translating inversions, the translator must
use other emphatic means in order to preserve expressiveness and convey the main opinion of the
author (Korunets 2001 p. 56).
Very often separate sentences and paragraphs are combined if they contain the same thought.
Everything should look like a single whole and not violate the complex syntactic whole - sentences
that make up the structural and semantic unity.
In order to better convey the semantic meaning, grammatical transformations are simply
necessary in translation. Such a transformation is acceptable for any part of speech or sentence
member if a word is translated from one language into another with a change in grammatical
meaning (Baker 2018, p. 96).
When translating detective novels, the translator often uses grammatical transformations. In
translation, such transformations describe grammatical changes in the construction of sentences.
When translating a detective novel, it will take into account the grammatical features of the source
text in order to subsequently adapt it for understanding in another language and for readers of other
sociocultural groups (Korunets 2001, p. 78).

 Let us consider what types of grammatical transformations are most often used in the
translation of the detective genre.
According to the Ukrainian translator S. E Maksimov the grammatical transformations
include, permutation, replacement, addition and omission (Maksimov 2012, p.203)
Replacement is common grammatical transformation in translation. Here, both grammatical
and lexical units are replaced; result is possible with a translator.
Replacements of parts of speech
In the translation of detectives, the translator often resorts to replacing part of the language.
This transformation is due to the peculiarities of the vocabulary of English and Ukrainian, as well as
the difference in compatibility standards (Maksimov 2012, p.203).
In the following example the auxiliary verb ‘have’ (present tense) and the past participle of
the main verb ‘walk’ is replaced by noun ‘вигул’:
It was too hot for gardening and everyone would have walked their dogs earlier. (Rowell
2021, р.18)
Для роботи в саду було занадто жарко, а для вигулу собак — занадто пізно.
Replacement of the passive construction
In the example below we transformed passive construction in active one.
Charlie’s eyes were fixed on the traffic. (Rowell 2021, р.37)
Чарлі не зводив погляду з дороги.
Replacement of the compound sentence with a simple one
‘So, this is really happening then, is it?’ mumbled Iain Gillies, peering down his nose at the
dog walking beside Zoe. (Rowell 2021, р.22)
Так це правда? – проговорив Ієн Гіллієс, дивлячись на собаку біля ніг Зої.
Another type of grammatical transformation that we applied is permutation, the essence of
which is to change the arrangement of words and phrases in the translated text compared to the
original (Maksimov 2012, p.203).
Zoe carried Harry’s dog bed rolled up under one arm. (Rowell 2021, р.42)
Під пахвою вона тримала килимок Гаррі.
The transformation of addition lies in the introduction into translation of lexical elements
that are absent in the original, in order to properly convey the meaning of the sentence being
translated, and in compliance with linguistic norms that exist in the target culture (Maksimov 2012,
p.203).
‘It looks calculated to me,’ said Zoe (Rowell 2021, р.21).
Все здається логічним і продуманим.
In the Ukrainian version of the above example, in order to enhance the effect of influencing
the reader, we added the adjective “продуманим”.
Omission is the opposite of addition, in which a certain linguistic element is removed from
the translation. We pointed out the omission in the translation of redundant language units. In most
cases, these are elements that relate to the structure of language (Maksimov 2012, p.203).
Zoe often wondered if he came out of his mother scowling. (Rowell 2021, р.32)
Може, він вже народився таким хмурим
In the above example, the translation of the part of the complex sentence ‘came out of his
mother’ is omitted, which does not change the meaning of the statement at all, since in this context
this sentence does not carry a significant informative load.
According to the classification of Naumenko and Gordeyeva (2011) grammatical
transformations are divided into:
• Partitioning (inner partitioning; outer partitioning)
• Integration (inner integration; outer integration)
• Compensation

 One of the most common transformations is the partitioning of sentences, both inner and
outer. Inner partitioning is the transformation of a simple sentence into a complex when translating
from a foreign language (Naumenko, Gordeyeva 2011, p.28).
Not like shooting someone in the head. Somebody wanted Ray Carlson to know he was
going to die.’ (Rowell 2021, р.40)
Це не постріл у голову — хтось хотів, щоб Рей Карлсон розумів, що помре.
As we can see from the above example, when translating a sentence from English, we
applied this transformation, as a result of which we obtained a complex sentence with an adverbial
modifier of the goal. This technique can be used to make a more appropriate sound in the language
of the recipient.
Outer partitioning is the partitioning of a complex sentence into several simple ones when
translated from a foreign language (Naumenko, Gordeyeva 2011, p.28).
Consider an example that confirms this statement:
One or two she didn’t recognise, testament to the burn-out rate of the squad, looked her up
and down. (Rowell 2021, р.42)
Одного чи двох Зої не впізнала, що не дивно плинність кадрів. Вони обдивились її з ніг
до голови.
Analyzing this example, we concluded that we used outer partitioning in order to focus on a
particular fact. It is worth noting that this grammatical transformation is used to simplify sentences,
placing semantic accents of syntactically complex sentences when translating from English.
Outer integration is a grammatical transformation in which two or more simple sentences are
combined into one complex sentence (Naumenko, Gordeyeva 2011, p.29).
He did this several times. He was in control. (Rowell 2021, р.18)
Він повторив це декілька разів, що все було під контролем.
As we can see, in the example above two simple sentences merged into one complex
sentence with the conjunction ‘що’. The Ukranian sentence has a coherent and concise structure.
Compensation is a grammatical transformation by which the loss of meaning in one part of a
sentence or text is compensated in another part of it. Compensation can be used when it is
impossible to translate a certain part of a sentence, but its reflection is important to reproduce the
integrity of the text (Naumenko, Gordeyeva 2011).The concept of compensation involves the
solution of two main points: the ratio in the equivalence of the source text and target one, as well as
the analysis of the correlation of grammatical features between the texts of two languages. This
transformation is especially relevant when the translator fails to translate the pun and adapt it to the
target text (Bilous 2005, p.35-41). Although Simon Rowell's book is not full of puns, but we
noticed the phenomenon of compensation in the following example:
His was the only car at this end of the car park (Rowell 2021, р.17)
В цьому кінці парка було пусто.
In this case, we used compensation in order to approach the word order closer to the norms
of the Ukrainian language. The use of the adverbial modifier at the beginning of the sentence is
common for the Ukrainian language, in turn for the English language is more typical direct order of
words.
These are the main grammatical transformations when translating detective stories from
English into Ukrainian. Knowledge of all the nuances and the ability to use the techniques of
translation transformations gives the translator the opportunity for an adequate translation.

2.5 Translating stylistic devices

One of the main tasks of a translator is not to lose sight of the text as a whole. The translator
must retain different stylistic elements. According to Wales this increases the value of the style
(2011). The main field of activity of the translator is related to the search for and selection of
stylistic equivalents to the source text. The translator should choose the equivalent at the level of
text structure. Only at this level does the text transferred from one language to another as a
homogeneous unit.

 But if we consider the abundance of the words in fiction, then that criterion is eliminated in
detective work. It is believed that the detective style of writing is not significant. However, the
study and translation of the work ‘The Long Game’ by Simon Rowell revealed certain stylistic
features. The works of this author are interesting and emotional. They are based on the dialogues of
the characters. Therefore, the translator has to render direct language in order to preserve all its
expressiveness.
The dialogues are dominated by neutral stylistic means, similes and metaphors, because,
according to M. Novikova and O. Baraban (1998), the task of dialogue in the detective is to
promote development, but not to reveal the nature. In the crime fiction dialogues perform a number
of communicative and pragmatic functions. They are connectors in the embodiment of artistic style
in its specific detective genre. Dialogues enliven the story. Exclamatory and interrogative sentences
convey the emotional language of the characters.
According to Svitlana Prysyazhnyuk (2006, p. 20), dialogues between the characters are a
convincing means of psychologism. In the dialogues Simon Rowell skillfully uses expressiveness,
simple sentences, immediacy and lack of eloquence.
Depending on the leading communicative function of dialogues S. Chapman and B. Clark
offer the following classification:
1) Conversation dialogues.
The purpose of which is the exchange of views; feelings; maintaining a conversation based
on association-related topics.
2) Dialogues of solution.
They are characterized by the continuity of the theme; equal interest of partners in decision-
making; careful design of statements; possibility of repetitions and clarifications.
3) Interrogation dialogues.
During which the roles are quite clearly distributed.
4) Clarification dialogues.
They are characterized by clarification of misunderstanding (Chapman, Clark 2014).
In the Simon Rowell’s book “The Long Game” we noticed the third type of dialogue.
Interrogation frequently involves negotiation. For example, bargaining is a common aspect
of police interrogations (Williams 2000, p 212). We also used in the translation the interrogation
dialogue. We observed questioning in the translation which is not flabbergast. Detective Zoe is
trying to find out who is the murder, so it's no surprise that she asks a lot of questions not only to
witnesses and suspects, but also to her investigative team.
Consider the following example:
‘Did you have a key?’
‘To what?’
‘To the house. A key to get in?’
‘No, the door was wide open when I got here.’
Zoe nodded. ‘Tell me about Ray’s enemies.’
‘He didn’t have any.’
‘Well, someone wanted to hurt him. You probably know him better than anyone, Dwayne.
Are you sure there isn’t anything that can help us?’
‘No. I can’t think of a single person who had a problem with him.’
‘Any drug issues?’
‘Nah. He never touched them.’
‘Gambling?’
‘Twenty bucks here and there on a Saturday down at the pub. Nothing big.’
‘What about relationships?’
‘Single. Has been a while now.’ Dwayne crossed his arms and looked at the ground.
Zoe watched him. ‘He was married though, right?’
‘Yeah. He was married to Donna for a long time. Sixteen years or so.
They broke up a while back. Getting divorced. She lives in Sorrento, on the bay.’

 ‘You think she could’ve done this, Dwayne?’
‘Nah, doubt it. Donna is a piece of work, but I can’t see her doing this.’ (Rowell 2021, р.41)

спромоглась.
We accurately conveyed the character of the detective, her severity and assertiveness. Using
addition and vocabulary that are more understandable to the Ukrainian-speaking reader, we
preserved the content of the text and made the text more expressive.
We outlined the use of one of the most common and effective means of speech expression
- simile. Simile is a component of imagery. It emphasizes ideas, people, places, or other
interrelations very effectively and vividly (Yefimov,Yasinetska 2004, p. 65). In the following
examples we can observe its usage:
He looked like a wax model (Rowell 2021, р.28)
Він лежав, як воскова лялька.
This office felt like home to Zoe and she was happy to be back (Rowell 2021, р.42)
У офісі Зої відчувала себе як вдома, тому рада була повернутися.
Alliteration is one of the most prominent stylistic figures. The presence of this stylistic
device can cause difficulties in translation. When translating such a stylistic figure, it is very
difficult to maintain equivalence and preserve its impact. The translator can choose between two
strategies: literal translation, in which the stylistic effect is lost, or lexical substitution, in which the
semantic function of the original is lost (Novikova 2016, p.123-130).
Consider an example that is relevant to our study:
On the wall above the body a mirror was shattered, shards still held loosely together by its
frame (Rowell 2021, р.19).
Над тілом висіло розбите дзеркало, майже всі уламки якого, на диво, залишились у
рамі.
The term "alliteration" refers to the reception of euphony, which consists of emphasizing
words with repeated identical consonant sounds (Bilodid, 1970-1980, p. 34). Alliteration in this
example is observed in the repetitive sound "s". Alliteration is not saved in translation.
Also, sometimes the author uses a stylistic "reduction" of vocabulary to the conversational
level, for a better perception of the work by Ukrainian-speaking readers:
Had a non-fatal stabbing in Rosebud last year, but the junkie gave himself up two days later
(Rowell 2021, р.29).

In the speech of the hero Charlie Shaw , as we can observe, there is a significant number of
expressive means, the predominant of which are metaphors. In the course of the analysis, it was
found that some of them were translated literal and did not lose their emotional coloring in the
target text. Consider an example of the translation of one of the metaphors:
It made Zoe uneasy, as if the house were about to run her down (Rowell 2021, р.32).
У Зої було неприємне відчуття, що зараз ця груда просто звалиться на неї.
From time to time, for greater emotionality, the author uses phraseology in the dialogues of
the characters of his work:
It was a box of memories best left closed (Rowell 2021, р.21).
Краще б цій скриньці Пандори залишатись закритою.
Here we decided not to look for the Ukrainian equivalent, and simply to convey the very
essence of phraseology.
We also noticed the use of the Australian slang in the crime fiction “The Long Game”.
Translating slang into Ukrainian is considered by many researchers to be a complex process. Often
the problem is the lack of correspondence between these concepts in dictionaries. Another problem
is the ambiguity of translation due to the expressiveness and vulgarization of slang. According to
Luc van Doorslaer (2010), “the first reason for the difficulties of adequate translation of non-
standard units is the difference in the composition of lexical and semantic groups of words.
In the following examples we can observe its usage:
‘Lot of aggro between them?’ (Rowell 2021, р.29)
Розійшлися мирно?
According to Oxford dictionary, aggro is defined as “something that may cause aggressive
behavior”. This Australian slang is used to express emotion of hostility. It is worth noting to
translate this odd word we applied antonymous translation, notably positivization. We used the
word “мирно” which does not correspond to aggressive behavior. We obtained this lexical semantic
transformation to make the translation clear for the target audience.
‘You know why we’re here, then?’ asked Zoe. ‘Those hoons (Rowell 2021, р.32)
– Ви знаєте, чому ми тут? – Через цих гонщиків, звісно.
In this example we also have the word that belongs to the Australian slang “hoons”. To
translate this word we relied on the context and found out the appropriate equivalent “гонщики”. A
hoon, in Australia is a person who deliberately drives a car in a dangerous manner. The translator
should also have background knowledge or use additional literature in order to translate the
Australian slang.
Also, when translating detectives, the use of transferred epithets was noticed. They are much
more common in English than in Ukrainian. The peculiarity of such epithets lies in the fact that they
are not logically combined with the word with which they are grammatically connected, and thus
acquire special expressiveness.
Sorry, that sounded awful. Bad habit.’ (Rowell 2021, р.12)

 CONCLUSIONS

“The Long Game” is a detective story written by a bestselling Australian crime mystery
author Simon Rowell. It was originally published on August 3, 2021 under the auspices of the Text
Publishing Company in Australia. His intention consisted at transmitting humanistic idea for the
readers. Crime has become the main theme of the book because it has long become one of the most
terrible ulcers of the human way of life. The whole history of mankind is a history of gradual but
steady growth of crime, which is developing today at a particularly rapid pace. This book is
interplay between culture, morality and truth.
One of such crime is murder which is mentioned in the book. As the text belongs to the
detective genre it was very essential to mention the main features of the detective genre: having a
mystery to solve; using situations from ordinary life; creating a plot in accordance with the
unwritten rules of detective stories; having no random errors. The detective is quite serious and self-
sufficient despite the entertaining nature. It makes the reader a real researcher who must include his
logic, imagination and understanding of human psychology.
Differences in the grammatical structure, lexical composition and style of the English and
Ukrainian languages make the translation of detective stories a very difficult task, because the
translator faces two problems: on the one hand, to preserve the meaning of the original text, on the
other hand, to adapt the text for the Ukrainian reader.
When translating the source text, we used various techniques, such as grammatical
transformations. These include addition (20%), omission (14%) compensation (11%) and
replacement (6%). As we can see the most common was addition and it not weird while this type of
grammatical transformation lies in the introduction into translation of lexical elements that are
absent in the original, in order to properly convey the meaning of the sentence being translated, and
in compliance with linguistic norms that exist in the target culture.
The most common lexical transformations in our translation were literal translation (10%)
transliteration/transcription (12%), modulation (12%) and equivalence (15%).

 АНОТАЦІЯ
Цей перекладацький проєкт є реалізацією перекладу детективу Саймона Ровела ‘The
Long Game’. Проєкт присвячений визначенню лексичних, граматичних трансформацій і
стилістичних засобів, які характерні для детективного жанру. Надалі пропонуються варіанти
опрацювання цих засобів з метою створення найбільш адекватного перекладу. Відтак,
перекладацький проєкт складається зі вступу, двох розділів, висновків, списку використаних
джерел та додатку.
Перший розділ проєкту є авторським перекладом вищевказаного матеріалу з
англійської українською мовою. Пріоритетним завданням при здійсненні даного перекладу
було збереження як естетичної, так і інформативної функції оригінального дослідження..
Другий розділ проєкту представлений у формі аналізу, пояснення та обґрунтування
доцільності прийнятих протягом виконання першого розділу цієї роботи перекладацьких
рішень щодо застосування найбільш поширених лексичних, граматичних трансформацій і
стилістичних засобів першоджерела цільовою мовою.
Перекладацький проєкт буде корисним тій українській аудиторії, яка цікавиться
детективною літературою і бажає розвинути логічне мислення.
