Assignment 1
Ideas:
Business Idea Rank
Lab grown diamonds: Lab-grown diamonds offer great value, as they are more 5
affordable (30% less expensive) than natural diamonds of comparable size and
quality. This can also break the mafia and cartels around mined diamonds by
offering an alternative to people where they don’t have to shell out as huge a
sum.
Airport App: Traveling through airports has a lot of steps including but not limited 1
to baggage scan, checking in baggage, and security checks. You would want to
check the status of your flight, gate number and maybe even order some
refreshments and see if there are any sources of entertainment, an app to provide
all these options would be a one-stop solution for every traveler.
Pitch for chosen idea:
Airport App:
After witnessing the Great Indian Airport Congestion firsthand, being a victim of delayed flights
and watching people miss flights because of pure inefficiency, I came up with this idea, while
waiting at an airport. Having taken over 100 flights, I can confidently say that my experience at
major Indian airports has deteriorated drastically. Major airports like Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru are
operating beyond their capacity in peak seasons, and on top of that there is a significant lag in
conveying important information which leads to inefficiency. This creates a need gap, for a central
source of information and I feel this is the right time to help people navigate airports better and for
airports to run their operations smoothly.
A mobile application for android and iOS, that is a one-stop solution (A super app) for all airport
needs. It will serve all, travelers, airport authorities and airlines.
Initial phase, for travelers: Starting from locating baggage scan booths and check in kiosk, to
finding the least crowded counter for bag drop and security checks, to spotting the right baggage
claim belts, this app will have it all. People can also order refreshments (from any vendor at the
airport) and look for entertainment options and lounges at the airport in case of long waiting times.
In subsequent phases this app can utilize customer data and flight data to help airport authorities
better allocate gates, and staff security check booths (bottleneck at Delhi Airport) according to
peak hours, seasonality, and bookings on flights.
The sources of revenue for this would be through vendors who sell product, data on preferences
of travelers which can be utilized to provide better experiences and advertisements on the app.
The value proposition is saving time and having a smoother experience at airports as compared to
the hassle one might face today at the Indira Gandhi International Airport at Delhi.
188 million people fly annually in India, almost all of them are smartphone users, we can capture
the market through aggressive marketing and providing exclusive app offers and discounts. This
will be a good market entry strategy to grab the attention of travelers. We can advertise through
partnership with airlines and airports, e.g.: provide a download link in the email with boarding pass,
place QR codes at airport entrances. In the long run, frequent flyers would form a loyal customer
base. Owing to positive network externality, we will be able to expand our airport network after we
onboard a decent number of travelers.
The idea of an airport super app is novel and would require significant collaborative efforts with
multiple stake holders. It would be a central information repository that would be updated in real-
time and would be compute and network intensive. It would also require considerable initial
investment to capture the market, and hence investments from well reputed business owners. We
can start pilot operations once the application is developed in a major airport like Delhi or
Bengaluru, (where there would be technocrats)
An app like this post development can be valued at around $1Bn looking at the sheer volume of air
traffic and technological infrastructure around it.
