Design Evolution

Key focus: Vehicle packaging

Car chosen
I’ve selected the initial model 1964 which was the most sold car till date in a month after its
launch.
And Ford Shelby 2008 model which was a huge massive hit that bought the mustang back to its
glory, the current model 2015 Mustang which was massively tweaked and completely ideated to
start a new generation to celebrate the mustang for its 50 years completion
Brief History of Mustang & the revolution begins!

• Mustang name – Air fighter

unconventional packaging.
Mustang DNA
• Created an all new segment
• Affordable Muscle car , power packed with efficient engine.
• Sporty long hood, short deck, and "open mouth" styling
• Customization and modification friendly ideal for street racing.
• A poster car for every young lad!
1964 Basic Mustang Packaging
• Mustang’s Initial version was called as 1964
½ as it is modified very slightly with respect
to the 1963 Mustang Concept car.
• Later it is officially released as Mustang
1965 model.

Summarizing Vehicle Norms and Environment regulations.

• To summarize the whole concept of these it can be branched into

three main divisions
• 1. Safety of the passenger
• Adult and child. Interior and exterior
• 2. Safety of the Pedestrian. Exterior
• 3. Carbon foot print of the vehicle.
• Efficient Design. Interior

Analytical Write-up for 1960 vs 2008
• Bumper Design
• Flat and made of metal, later the regulations forced the auto makers to
introduce the polypropylene bumpers with curved edges to avoid severe
damage to pedestrians and to withstand low speed impacts.
• Hood
• Long hoods which were stretched up and having a flat structure was a bad
consideration in case of passengers visibility over it and also the aero
dynamic efficiency.
• Headlights:
• Headlights which were grooved inside into shells which avoids the visibility of
the car from the point of a vehicle that is approaching normal directions
towards it. According the regulations the headlights were asked to move
around the hood in which 20% of the area should be visible on the side profile
too. The regulation was added in 1980-90s period.
• The surface over the headlights should always be mounted straight in order to
make the driver read the extent of the hood i.e. the extreme end.
Analytical Write-up for 1960 vs 2008
• Seating Arrangement:
• Bucket seats weren't provided in 190 generation and no anti submarine seats were
provided in 2008 model in order to hold the passenger within the seat during crash.
• Pillar Arrangement
• Sharp front header and straight edged pillars lead to increased air drag.
• Pillars which used to straight for the comfort of the window glass railing were shaped
into the curved profiles for more air allowance, and lower greenhouse area and to
avoid blind spots for better visibility. It also adds better anti rollover protection,
moreover in case of a body rollout the impact over a passenger would be far lesser
due to accommodation provided.
• This Design also adds strength in case of roof crush deforming the windows and
pillars outside the body not allowing the structure hit the passenger.
• Boot
• The raised boots previously used to make the car very unstable during drifting and
high speeds especially in case of front engine packaging which will lead to creation of
the low pressure rears that would allow the car to roll out and tumble.
• The new boot doesn’t raise up at the end, instead following the norms it should be
tapered towards the road which allows the air to move around thus increasing stability
and weight issue.
Analytical Write-up for 1960 vs 2008

• Tail lamps
• Norms were introduced towards the placement of lamps restricted between 406 mm to
1803 mm from ground height.
• Tapered Rear roof rail
• It creates more space for the creation of tumble zone which acts as a protection for the
passengers taking the impact around the car and also being offset avoiding direct contact
to the passenger.
• Belt/Character/Shoulder lines
• The lines were heavily re attributed to carry the air over the lines and also to
accommodate muscle and better safety offering sill structures.
• Dashboard Regulations:
• The dashboard was tweaked in case of materials and dial fixation norms.
• Tire Envelops were changed to reduce air lift under the vehicle and also to
improve efficiency and also the foot swing came into the picture which largely
affected the tire envelope position due to which the rake angle changes
• Approach and Departure angles were introduced to avoid hitting Foot paths or
parking blocks.
• Even the License plate locations are also tweaked due to which the change in
front grille has been happened.

Analytical Write-up for 2008 vs 2015
• Roof came down significantly giving it’s a tighter package so much of
like performance oriented coming closely to match the aerodynamics
of a sports car, to increase stability and stance.
• Instrument panel was moved 20-30 mm inside due to the shift in the
cowl area.
• Thus H point was lowered.
• The visibility over the hood was improved with this and it is even
greater offering more interior space.
• Improved pitch control during hard acceleration and hard braking
which redirects us to less body roll chances.
• Three dimensional sculpted hood which indicates typical muscle that
gives the hint of 1960’s
• Shrank the steering wheel as most of the users have asked for.
• 3 inches back line and 2 inches roof line was diminished.
Analytical Write-up for 2008 vs 2015
• The rear light was designed to keep the 1960s tradition, but that is
where it surprises us , the tri-bar lamps make an impact it make it at
emergency times.
• The hood was lowered by 32 mm for better visibility and pedestrian
safety.
• Dash to Axle length was increased as A pillar was further moved
back. (Crumple zone increased)
• Boot lid sits 70 mm lower for a better rear visibility which was high
drop back in the previous model.
• Rear Hunches were added due to tapered cabin design which
allowed 70 mm wider rear stance that increased the interior space
and also decreased the air lift adding weight over the back.
• C pillar went down to avoid Blind-spot coverage.
• Steering was given leather mounting to avoid discomfort for the
users to hold it during extreme temperatures.
