 1. Introduction
An externship is a short, unpaid and informal internship where scholars spend anywhere from a
single day to a few weeks getting exposure to what it’s like to work at a company. The purpose of
an externship is to give apprentices a special experience and exposure to a job, company or
industry. Since the opportunity is typically very short, trainees don’t have to perform heavy work,
and thus are unpaid rather they simply share practical experience.

1.1 Background

ATM Construction Plc. which is involved in any construction, work like road building and bridge.
The construction company main office is located in Addis Ababa and currently construct 14km
road in Hossan town. The Company has a good experience with construction.

I studied civil engineering in under and post graduate program in MSc. therefore, I hope this
externship (especially in relation to construction of road and bridge ) will improve my theoretical
knowledge and will make full effective the teaching – learning process.

1.2 Motivation of the externship

One of the millennium development goals in our country is to achieve sufficient infrastructure
with in towns and cities. Therefore, in order to achieve this goals number of infrastructure projects
have been constructed and under construction. Engineers who can run these types of projects both
in design, construction and supervision have graduated from different universities. However, these
fresh engineers who are joins to these projects are not match enough and well professionals to do
good quality construction. This is clearly because in most of our universities the teaching learning
process is theory based and this poor practice in practical education system especially with the
help of software-based leads as luck of real and well experienced engineers. Therefore, after my
externship my teaching system will really be fully software based and we will share my experience
to my staffs, also I will participate in different community service activities such as giving training
regarding with construction and design of road. That’s why I am interested to go externship.

1.2 Objective of the Externship
1.2.1 General objective

 The main objective of this externship will be to create an exposure for the academic staff
in relation to construction and design of civil engineering works.

1.2.2 Specific objectives

 To create plat form that will be further developed to a joint venture’s relation with our
institute.
 To incorporate the new Ethiopian practice code into the academics as well as the real world
project that has to be designed by our consulting firm.
 To get experience about the organizational structure and job description of each personnel
in the construction as well as site organization.
 To know how to study baseline condition (pre-feasibility and feasibility study) for any civil
structures.
 To know how to design any building project and roads by using different software
applications.
 To know the ways of construction for any civil project
 To know how to practice construction skill, to prepare bill of quantity.
 To know how to get researchable topics in our profession.

 2. Externship Approaches
2.1 Approaches

To know how I can study any civil project pre-feasibility and feasibility study, I will work in
collaboration with office engineers. We will be going to aid the community with design,
construction, and supervision of multimillion birr private or government funded civil infrastructure
works and we will arrange software trainings which can be given to Wachemo university staffs.
To know how to prepare procurement document, tender document and contract document. We will
do in collaboration with the design office engineers. For those projects which are under
construction, we will participate in the preparation of specification, takeoff sheet, bar schedule and
bill of quantity. we will submit a proposal to Atem Construction Plc., to visit and observe those
civil structures which are under construction, rehabilitation, operation and maintenance. Finally, I
will prepare a report based on what we have just got experience and I will also design, construct
and supervise any civil project via ongoing consulting enterprise that Wachemo university owned.

2.2 Significant of the externship

 I will effectively show to my students how to building and road projects.
 It will help me that to know any feasibility study construction project.
 It will have very importance to improve my understanding in the preparation of
specification, takeoff sheet and bill of quantity.
 I will get experience on how to manage projects, how to communicate with any workers
under the project (good workability) and etc.
 I will share the experience which will I get from training to my students and colleagues.
 It will drive me to prepare a systematic area for research and community service.
 Facilitate the teaching- learning process.
