THE NEU POLE

INTRODUCTION
 Time: 23/12 to 7/1 (Lunar Calendar).
 Activites:
- Erecting a bamboo pole, stripped of its leaves, except for a tuft at the top.
- We often hang a snatch of pineapple leaves, chicken feathers and some New Year’s
decorations on a tree.
- We often enjoy other traditional activities such as farewelling the "Kitchen King" or
making Chung cake on the same day.
 Significance:
- Warding off ghosts and demons from entering the community.
- Direct ancestors to the path home for Tet holiday.
- Hoping that all the bad luck of the past year will be chased away.

HISTORY
- Devils invaded human’s land  the Buddha helped people  the devils were chased to
the East Sea  asked to return to vist their mainland  Neu pole is planted to signal
which land is belong to human.

COMPARISION
- In terms of meaning: similar to Christmas tree but Christmas tree can suffer from winter
and take time to decorate.
