Hello and Good morning, Respected faculty.

I would be discussing the topic ‘Why Larsen and Toubro is a great place to work’.

Before we begin understanding how Larsen and Toubro is or has become a great place to work, let’s
start off by pondering over a simple yet significant question :

What really makes an organisation a great place to work? Is it the salary, the incentives or is it a lot
more than that?

Give that a thought while I take you through the summary of an HBR article published in the year
2022 that addresses the question. The recently published article was written to provide a solution to
the organizations facing high attrition rates world over. The article aims to provide solutions to make
the organizations happier for and the work loved by employees.

The article states three principles that must be incorporated within all practices and policies of the
organisation:

1. The people are the point : The organisation should make the employees the most
important stakeholders in the organization. by

- encouraging the employees to set both career and personal goals,

- contributing to the employee’s education in the form of direct payment for college degree
or forgiving and reimbursing student loans,

- celebrating the goals and achievements of the employee whether the goals are pertaining
to the organisation or the individual.

- and staying connected with and supporting their former employees in their new careers
and jobs.

2. One size fits one : The organisation should understand that each of the employees is a
unique person with distinct passions, interests and skills. And thus should refrain from
general standards and mechanisms of performance management for all employees. Since
different people in the same role find passion in different aspects of the role and thrive and
excel in the role using different techniques.

3. In trust we grow : For employees to discover and contribute their passions at work,
leaders must explicitly make trust the foundation of all practices and policies. Trust leads to
innovation, new ideas and new ways of doing a job, increased affinity and passion for a job,
and high engagement and resilience while working the job amongst the employees.

We now head toward understanding How Lasren and Toubro is a great place to work.

1. To begin with, Larsen and Toubro has the three principles incorporated in its principles
and practices. The slide explains the manner in which the three principles have been incorporated at
the organization. The 3 points in the slide correspond to the three principles in the sequence as
stated earlier.
The organisation ensures that the 1st principle(people are the point) is in place by encouraging
employees to set goals(both career and personal), providing investment in the ongoing education of
each employee, celebrating each employee’s goals and achievements whether the goal is pertaining
to the organisation or the employee, and staying connected and supporting their former employees
in their new careers and jobs.

The organisation ensures that the 2nd principle(one size fits one) is in place by avoiding general
standards and mechanisms of performance management for all employees and understanding the
uniqueness i.e the unique interests, passions and methods or techniques of completing the job
pertaining to different employees

The organisation ensures that the 3rd principle(in trust we grow) is in place by discarding rituals that
erode trust such as goals imposed to the employees by the senior leadership(as such goals are
artificial and disconnect employees from thinking through what they love and how they can
contribute).

The other rituals that must be discarded to ensure trust prevails in an organisation are those of
performance ratings and 360 degree surveys. Performance ratings are unreliable and reduce an
employee to a number, failing to see the individual as a whole. 360 degree surveys generate
unreliable data that in no way reveals who a particular employee is.

These rituals or mechanisms convey to the employees that they are monitored without any real
trust in the employees believing that the employees know how to do their jobs.

Apart from the data that clearly depicts indicates how Larsen and Toubro is undoubtedly a great
place to work, the following slide presents a few more facts that would certainly make one consider
Larsen and Toubro as their next employer.

with a lot more than what a workplace usually offers an employee but will also by all means
contribute to your growth and learning and support you through your careers throughout life, even
after you’ve left the organization.
