RUINLIZATION I : Signal 2.

- A sound installation comprised of motor, raw materials like iron

sheet and copper tube, with 5 speakers and 2 big iron cover (wok)

- A world-building sound installation, to produce the soundscape

that imagined a perception of ruin

- An exploration of the shape of real object and structure of the

building to create sculptural and physical sound

- Creating virtual space by combining sound pieces, which

produced by those raw materials, in the same area with its texture
Conceptual Idea

Based on the image of a Signal Tower, I looking it as a ruin. What I

presented is a ruin-lization object, but not a symbol of ruin.

I used to think that the signal tower seems very ‘ruined’ as it didn‘t
show anything while it working, all we can see is its outer surface.

However, it actually keeps working in low profile, it is the most

important things to keep us getting on. The data transformation
inside a signal tower is hidden. We normally can't know how it
works.

I can see the contradiction between the external image and the
actual function of a signal tower.
Compare to the electronic sense people usually think of a signal
tower, I try to use continuously low noise to create a sense of
decadent.

Deconstructing the whole image of the signal tower, those raw

materials can be seen as some components of the signal tower. By
dismantling the structure, we can now hear the sound that we
normally don’t focus on.

RUIN-LIZATION

I believe something that is not revealing does not mean it has no

value. However, people normally saw something as no value if
the thing itself is not showing it.

I try to unearth the hidden value of ruin, by studying the image of

ruin aesthetics.

RUINLIZATION is a project that I will keep deconstructing

difference object.
Set up

There are 5 motors putting in different parts of the installation.

Each connected a contact mic and a speaker to produce the
sound.

The setup creates a virtual space with a physical cover

surrounding the audience.

- Two semicircle cover is placed on the two sides of the audience,

it can surround the whole upper body of people

- Two speakers are pointed to the cover

- The details of the sound were amplified and the echo was
created, the echo is more directed to the audience standing in
front of the installation

- Sound: Two different varied low-pitched sound created by

motor vibrating the iron shelf, the texture and feeling is changing
while the audience moving their position. To create the sense of
space and variation
- An iron sheet and a copper tube with motor is placed on top of
the setup

- Motor will vibrate the iron sheet, sound will pass through the
copper tube and create slight feedback

- The speaker of this set of sound is placed in the back middle of

the installation

- Sound: Really low frequency sound, audience may not directly

heard, but people can feel it and hear it when getting closer. To
create the high pressure feelings
- Two sets of motors slightly impacting the iron shelf

- The speaker is pointed upon to the audience

- Sound: Low-pitched (a bit higher than all above), piecemeal

sound. To create a kind of rhythm of sound and machine sense.

The principle of all the sound is all non-stop working, they form a
continuous circuit like signal tower did. Combined all the low
noise together to create the world that is kind of obvious but not
widely known.

Audiences can still choose to find the details and feel the texture
of sound, or get used to it and ignored it.
