Section:T-204

Instructions: Answer the questions below. (10 points per item, total of 20 points)

1. What are the benefits World Heritage Site get from Tourism? Give two (2)
examples.

The benefit that the world heritage site gets from tourism ;

1.) The sites often receive large amounts of visitors.

Heritage tourism has a strong impact on society by emphasizing our appreciation for
history and culture as well as preservation of natural resources. It encourages us to
understand the origins of our ancestors, know where we come from, and build a sense
of pride. Heritage tourism benefits people socially through heritage celebrations that
have been shown to improve community cohesion. By visiting heritage sites tourists are
exposed to different cultures which may lead them to respect others more or learn about
their own culture better. They can see how other people live, share ideas with them,
trade skills with them and promote greater understanding across borders.

2.)It benefits the entire community of the world heritage site because it strengthens an
area’s brand and gives it unique cultural offerings

It helps reinforce local pride for current residents as well as attract new people to a
region. Heritage tourism does not only benefit an area economically but socially and
culturally too! There are three key heritage tourism benefits: economic, social, and
cultural impacts. Heritage tourism has the potential to significantly impact an economy
with increased spending in restaurants, hotels, gift shops and museums all of which
help create jobs- but heritage tourism also contributes directly to the revitalization of
communities by strengthening their identities and encouraging the preservation of
traditional buildings or sites through public investments.
2. Give two (2) ways on how can World Heritage Site maximize revenues from
Tourism.

The ways on how World Heritage Site maximize the revenues from tourism;

1.) A portion of visitor fees should be set aside to help finance promotional activities.
This will start the cycle of attracting additional visitors, thereby generating increased
revenue for operations. A mechanism should be set up for retaining a portion of the
earnings. This will create the necessary incentive to promote increased visitation. Even
with such a mechanism in place, some sites may need outside funding to begin
developing promotional materials.

2.) While tourism can contribute to protection and restoration efforts, the right balance
between economic gain and undesirable impacts can be elusive. Managers know that a
tourist attraction must be periodically renewed to remain competitive. In the case of
World Heritage sites, they are also aware that they are under an international obligation
to maintain or restore the site’s original values. This responsibility poses difficult
questions regarding the degree of change that should be permitted to accommodate
tourism growth. Another problem is ensuring that a portion of tourism revenue remains
in the community as a means of fostering local protection, conservation and restoration
efforts.
