STAGING FESTIVALS AND EVENTS AT WHS

Instructions:

1.What do you think are the advantages of staging festivals and events at World
Heritage Sites? Give two. (10 points)

The importance of staging festivals and events at World Heritage sites are the following;

 Attracts visitors, which stimulates the growth of tourism and other

businesses in a town or region

By definition, festivals attract visitors. And visitors spend money, which boosts the local
economy both on and off the festival site. On-site spending includes admission fees,
parking fees, food, beverage and souvenir sales and more. But off-site spending related
to festivals generates revenue for communities, too.

Festivals also provide free marketing and advertising for local businesses as visitors talk
about their fun experiences when they go back home. If visitors post comments and
photos about their experiences on Facebook or other social media, so much the better.
The economic benefits of successful festivals ripple throughout a local economy
affecting tourism and non-tourism-related businesses alike.

 Teaches new things.

Whatever a festival's theme, it's bound to be instructional and visitors are bound to learn
from it .Of course, education including greater awareness and new knowledge is
another social benefit of festivals. This is hands-on, experiential learning offered in the
fun context of celebration.

Learning is a big byproduct of a festival.When a community launches a celebration,to

showcase and promote understanding of the area's natural resources and native
culture, as well as attract visitors to the byway. This educational experience helped
visitors connect to the area that make a town special and evoke good feelings.
2.What do you think are the disadvantages of staging festivals and events at
World Heritage Sites? Give two. (10 points)

The disadvantages of staging festivals and events at World Heritage sites are the
following;

 Seasonality

When you travel to a certain country, there is a high cost of the air fare tickets and
accomodation of a particular country.

The phenomenon of seasonality affects every tourist destination in the world to some
extent. Seasonality is a measurable feature of tourism since it has significant economic
importance and can be seen through the number of visitors, how much they spend, and
the number of admissions to attractions.

 Noise Pollution

Music may be peaceful and harmonious to ears but excess of anything would damage.
Noise pollution reaches it peak during festivals

ICT APPLICATIONS FOR WHS MANAGEMENT

Instructions:

1, How can ICTs assist in the site management of a World Heritage Site?
Research a WHS anywhere in the world which uses ICTs in terms of its
management and operation. Use the format given below. (30 points)

Format:

 NAME OF THE WHS

 (Picture of the WHS)

 Description of the WHS:

 Name of the ICT and Explanation how is it used in the Site

 How can ICTs assist in the site management of a World Heritage Site?

Information and communication technologies (ICT) are revolutionizing the ways in

which the public interacts, understands, and appreciates the importance of cultural
heritage around the world. They are additionally enabling sustainable tourism to
flourish in an era of unprecedented globalization. James Blake Wiener of Ancient
History Encyclopedia speaks to Professor Lorenzo Cantoni, the chair holder of the
UNESCO Chair in ICT at the Università della Svizzera italiana to develop and
promote sustainable tourism in World Heritage Sites, about the ways in which ICT is
altering how we see the past and travel around the world

 Name of the WHS:Yellow Stone National Park

 PIcture

 Description of the WHS:

Yellowstone, one of the most famous US national parks, is a hotbed of volcanic

activity with over 10,000 thermal features including mud pots, fumaroles, hot springs
and geysers including Old Faithful, a cone geyser that erupts every half hour to two
hours. One of its most outlandish sights is the Grand Prismatic Spring in the Midway
Geyser Basin. The spring – 110m (360ft) in diameter and 50m (164ft) deep – is the
largest hot spring in the US and the third largest in the world after Frying Pan Lake in
New Zealand and Boiling Lake in Dominica. The spring’s extraordinary colours are a
result of pigmented micro-organisms growing around the edges of the mineral-rich
water.
 Name of the ICT and Explanation how is it used in the Site:

 Digital technologies servicing tourist experiences at World Heritage sites

Before travelling, tourists use the internet to collect information about the World
Heritage destination, make reservations and buy services. We will explore how to
generate useful content focused on the demands and needs of visitors, how to get a
relevant position on search engines, relevant online communities and social networks
and effective ways to improve an online presence.

During the trip, ICTs can improve the travel experience at World Heritage sites and
even exceed previous expectations of tourists. How can information be accessed
quickly and comfortably? Which applications can be used by visitors to monuments that
are part of cultural routes? How will augmented reality, virtual environments and 3D
animations help users enjoy the visit in a different way?

After the trip, tourists use new technologies (social networks, blogs, etc.) to share their
experiences, recommend and evaluate the destination. Businesses can use ICTs to
discover the degree of visitor satisfaction, and how to improve accordingly. Finally, we
will ask whether feedback and reviews should be accompanied by responses
(especially in case of negative comments).

 Webanalytics and Big Data.

Webanalytics and Big Data have become a key resource for obtaining visitor
information of WH sites, through the analysis of large volumes of data from diverse
sources such as logfiles, social networks, mobile devices, apps, official databases, etc.
This kind of data analysis focuses on real user actions rather than surveys, opening
many possibilities for cultural tourism, which can improve its services, management and
decision-making processes.
