1 Measures of Center and Spread (Center)

Learning Target: Use statistics to compare the measures of center (mean, median) and spread
(interquartile range, standard deviation) of two data sets.

Essential Question: How can you describe and compare data sets?

Answer:
Measures of center may be used to give information about the center

Measures of spread may be used to give information about how close the values are to each other

Measures of Center (they give information about the center)

sum of a set of values divided by the total number of values.

1. Mean (average): the ______

2. Median: the middle number of a data set when the values are in numerical order.
Note: If there is no single middle number, then find the mean of the two middle values.

3.Mode: the value that occurs the most often

Measures of Spread : Range and IQR

(they give information about how close the values are to each other)

See below for definitions and an example of centers of spread.

Examples

Mode: 68
Median: 68
Mean: 67.7 Mode: 14,600
IQR: 6 Median: 14600
9500, 10750, 11250, 14600, 14600, 15850, 16510, 19250, 25750

Mean: 15300
IQR: 6700
