His father, Syed Ahmadullah, was a government officer. His father’s posting at different places provided an opportunity forthe young, Walla tose the life of people in different pars of East Bengal This experience helped him create many of the characters of his novels and plays In 1939 he passed the matriculation examination from Kurigram High School and in 1941 he passed TA from dhaka college Aller graduating with ditneton from anendamohan college in Mymensingh in 1943, he enrolled at Caleutta University to do Masters in Economies but was unable to complete his studies. He also studied a diferent times at Feni High Schoo, Chitagong Zia School and Krishnanagar College Waillah’s literary activities began when, as student at Feni High Schoo, he edited #hand-oriten magazine ealed, Bhorer Al, is st short story “Hathat lor Shaikan" was published inthe Dhaka College magazine. He was proficient in both English and Bangla. He briefly Sys Woiulah published an English journal, Contemporary. He worked asa sub-edior i Caleuta’s Statesman dusing 1945-47, He also used to write for ‘Saogal, mobammad, Bulbul, Parichay, Aran and Purbasa, After the patton of indi in 1947, Syed Waiulah came to Dhaka and joined Radio Pakistan, ft as an esstant news editor and later ae a news editor in Karachi (1980-51) From 1951 to 1960 he served as a press attache a the Pakistan embassies in New Delhi, Sydiey, Jakarta and London, From 1960 to 1967 he served as first secretary at the Pakistan embassy in Paris and fom 1967 to 1971 he worked a a programme specialist at UNESCO in Pass 11971 Syed Watillah worked forthe liberation of Bangladesh and joined hands with hs frend Iustice Abu Sayeed Chowdhary to enlist the support of number ‘of French intllestuals including Piere Emanvel and Andre Malraux in mobilizing world public opinion, Syed Walillab's wife, Anne Mare whom he marie in 1955, translated his frst novel Iasalu (1948) into Pench, This was later tansatd into English as ree ‘Without Roots (1967). Lalsalu depicts the lite ofthe people of raral East Bengal atime when is intellectuals were greatly agitated over political issues. The novel ‘exposes the manipulations and activities of charlatans exploiting the religious beliefs ofthe common people. The novel revealed his deep understanding of human psychology. Chander Amabasya (1968) and Kando Nadi Kando (1968) ar two other novels by im that are considered exceptional additions to bangla teratre, these two novels he also shows sith great ars his commitment to the philosophy of Existentialism.
