1.0 GENERAL EQUIPMENT OVERVIEW

1.1 Blowout Preventer Functional Overview:
A ram BOP is a safety tool used during the drilling and workover operation to control well bore pressure. The
BOP achieves this pressure control by closing its rams to seal around drilling / workover tubulars, an open hole
or to shear drilling tubulars under various drilling conditions. During normal drilling, the BOP has little or no
internal pressure. However, if the drill bit penetrates a high pressure oil or gas pocket in the well, the BOP rams
can be closed so that the high pressure returning well fluid (whose pressure has overcome the weight of the
drilling mud) will not blow out of the well. The BOP is normally composed of a pressure containing body with a
vertical through bore with doors (including door operators) on both side, which hold the BOP rams and their
hydraulic operating mechanisms. Flanged or studded API connections are configured on either end of the body
at the vertical bore to facilitate connecting the IE™ preventer to a BOP stack or other well control components.
The body is generally configured with two outlets (one on each side) under each ram cavity located 90o to the
doors, which are routed laterally through the body to the vertical bore forming a well bore fluid outlet path. The
side outlets are used in conjunction with the choke and kill valves, choke manifold and other well control
equipment to bring the high well bore pressure under control using a variety of well control techniques available
to the well operator.

4.0 OPERATION
IE™ Ram BOPs are operated hydraulically to “Open” or “Close” using a standard hydraulic control system.
Manual locking screws are provided to lock the rams in the closed position. With manual locking screws in the
locked position, the rams cannot be opened hydraulically.

4.1 RAM Hydraulic Operations

Prior to any hydraulic operation, check for the following:

4.1.1 All hoses and couplings must be securely connected to both the preventer and the accumulator
system with no visible leakage.
4.1.2 Ensure that the hydraulic system delivers hydraulic fluid through the full working pressure range of
the complete system.
4.1.3 In the event there are hydraulic valves, ensure that the hydraulic control valves are placed in the
proper opened or closed positions.

4.2 RAM Manual Operations

4.2.1 To Manually lock the rams in the closed position, or to close the RAM BOP in the event of a
hydraulic system failure, turn both lock screws clockwise.
4.2.2 To “Open” the rams from the manually-locked positions, turn each lock screw counter-clockwise.
Apply hydraulic pressure to the “Open” port.

NOTE: NEVER release the manual locking screws with the hydraulic control valves in the neutral
positions.

It is important that fluid in the actuator is allowed to vent back to tank.

9.0 STORAGE
9.01 BOP Storage
9.01.1 Prior to storage, the BOP must be inspected, tested, drained, cleaned and dried.
9.01.2 All exposed metal surfaces should be coated with a rust preventive which will not vaporize at a
temperature above 120oF (48.9oC).
9.01.3 Protect flange faces and ring gasket proves from damage.
9.01.4 For long term storage, it is recommended that a heavy grease be applied to the BOP bores
at both ends out to and including the flange ring grooves as an additional rust
preventative measure.

9.02 Rubber / Elastomer Storage

Elastomeric or rubber parts are prone to aging or deterioration with time. This aging process is
accelerated by exposure to UV, contamination, etc.
9.02.1 All rubber goods / elastomers are supplied in plastic bags to protect them from the effects of
UV.
9.02.2 Rubber goods / elastomers should preferably be stored in a closed container. It is essential that
all rubber goods be protected from ultraviolet (UV) lights.
9.02.3 Store the elastomers in a dark place at or around 76oF (24oC) but never above 120oF (48.9oC).
9.02.4 Avoid any contamination with oil, grease or other fluids.
9.02.5 Do not hang “O” rings on hooks.
9.02.6 Rotate stored inventory on a “first in, first out” basis.
9.02.7 Protect rubber goods from any nicks, mechanic damage, etc.
