After this presentation, the student will be able to
(i) Understand what a Smart Meter is.
(ii) Understand how a Smart Meter is different from conventional meter
(iii) have knowledge of technologies used for Automatic Meter Reading
(AMR)

➢ Smart meters are static energy meters with:
Digital display
Communication facility
Connect/Disconnect load switch to physically connect/disconnect the consumer
as per the decision taken by the utility.
Communicate requested data as per programmed intervals.
Configurable remotely.
Interface to HAN and compatible devices.
Display utility alerts and messages on HDU.
Records consumption in intervals of an hour or less and allowing TOU recording.
Support remote load management/load curtailment.

➢ Smart Meters enable two-way communication between the meter and the
central system. Unlike home energy monitors, smart meters can gather
data for remote reporting.
➢ It communicates the information at least daily back to the utility for
monitoring and billing.

➢ Conventional way of meter reading:
Manual way of taking the reading by utility staff.
Time consuming and may have errors.
Limited parameters are taken.
These parameters are only useful for billing purpose .
➢ Modern Electronic Static Energy Meters are capable of :
Sensing
Measuring
Computing various electrical parameters.
Storing the same for a set period.
Detection and storage of tampering attempts with date and time.

➢ Automatic Meter Reading (AMR)
TK

Smar t Grid Technologies EEN 5031/5311

➢ AMR solves many issues of the traditional meter reading system like need
for human resources, efficiency, accuracy, delayed work, unavailability of
customer during metering visit by employee, etc.
➢ It is more economical and helps to save energy in a more efficient and
effective way.
➢ Furthermore it has a very notable advantage of having the ability to predict
the energy demands of the future, starting from every household to the
entire planet.
➢ Automated meter reading systems have been implemented using many
different technologies like GSM, ZigBee, PLC, D-SCADA, WiMAX and Hybrid
Technologies that comprises of a mixture of the above.

➢ Billing Data Download:
•Energy Data Download
•Conversion of encrypted data to common data format file.
•Uploading to application
•Generation of input to Billing Engine
➢ •Data Downloading and Analysis for Theft Prevention
•All parameter Data Downloading
•Conversion of encrypted data to common format file.
•Generation of Deviations for further actions.
➢ •Data archival
•Encrypted Data Files are stored
