Taken into consideration its history, fields, and uses/purposes, choose one farm

animal and briefly discuss its importance, uses, and contribution to society and
add your personal reason why did you choose that type of animal?

In ancient history, despite that goats easily revert to its wild form I would choose goat as

a farm animal for it being one of the first to have been domesticated. According to the

Archer Daniels Midland (ADM) Animal Nutrition, goats serve an importance of producing

current demands for substances in the form of food and clothing.  Goats are significant

farm animals in many parts of the world and have served mankind for ages. In the

Philippine Context, goats play an important role in the agricultural sector as it provides

secondary income to farmers with investment.

The demand for goat meat has grown substantially over the years among many other

uses of by-products such as dairy products of milk, yogurt, cheese and ice cream from

goats. Chevon is preferred by many people nowadays over any other meat.  In addition

to by-products from goats of industrial usefulness according to Sewport Team, “mohair

wool” is a kind of textile extracted from the hair of an angora goat this type of goat is

now prized for the silky and multipurpose wool that it produces. Mohair is a long,

smooth fiber used in hats, coats, sweaters and many other possible fashion

accessories. Cashmere wool is another kind of fiber derived from cashmere goats,

pashmina goats and other breeds of goats. For over a century, it has been utilized to

make yarn, textiles and clothing.

The goat industry in the Philippines contributes a great potential with 99% of goats

being raised in backyards. As stated by Ibarra P., in 1976 to 1986 there was a

significant increase in the annual per capita consumption of goat meat from 0.14 to 0.24

kg. Goats contribute to environmental benefits by keeping the wildlife corridors open,

preventing the spread of noxious weeds and promoting the growth of the local

vegetative species through moderate grazing.

As backyard goat raising in the Philippines accounts for more than 99% of the animal

inventory, I can personally say that having goat meat which  is naturally lean meaning it

is much lower in saturated fat and cholesterol, having a naturally higher HDL count (the
good cholesterol) and a naturally low LDL count (the bad kind of cholesterol). It is also

lower in calories than other meats.  With my family having a medical history on

hypertension is one reason why I chose goat as a farm animal that I would preferably

raise and produce in the future. Finally, I believe that goats are manageable in a sense

that having it as a popular farm animal to rural folks owing to the fact that it requires

simple management and low-cost production inputs as compared to swine and poultry.

Goat subsists on crop residues, agro-industrial by-products or any locally available

forage sources.

3.: Are you in favor of animal cloning? Why or why not? How about human

cloning? Why or why not

Based from the insights that I have acquired from the video, I can say that the

technology of science has evolved throughout the years. Through feasible research

studies and experiments, I can conclude that impossible and unexpected outcomes will

actually happen. One of the concrete example of the impossible outcome that became a

huge impact in the world of science and technology is Cloning. Cloning is a scientific

process of producing a genetically identical of a cell or a living organism.

• Are you in favor of animal cloning? Why or why not?

To answer that question, I’m pro animal cloning. From the observations that I have

learned about the creation of Dolly enlightened me that animal cloning can be beneficial

in the agricultural sector and as well as in the wildlife preservation. The application of

animal cloning in the agricultural sector can be a benefit owing to the fact that this kind

of scientific process allows our ranchers to elevate the general quality of their herds by

producing more copies of the high-quality animals in the herd. These animals are then

utilized for breeding, and the reproduced offspring becomes the food producing animals.

Besides from the agricultural sector, it is as well favorable in the wildlife preservation.
With global warming, pollution and climate change, extinction and endangerment of

other animals happened. I believe that animal cloning can be the best way to protect,

preserve and save our wild animals. There can be disadvantages and defects in animal

cloning but with the evolution of science and technology can improve and develop more

modified techniques on that process.

• How about human cloning? Why or why not

In this aspect, I can say that I am against human cloning. For some it is advantageous

seeing that human cloning could lead to new advances in medical science. But, first and

foremost, I think it’s inhumane and unethical to utilize embryonic/fetal cells as an

experiment. Some scientists say that it’s just “cells” to experiment but in my own point of

view it is “life”, it is still a living being no matter how minute or barely-visible to the naked

eye it's supposed to be sacred, they are not lab rats and trash. Besides that reason, I

think I can also say that the application of this scientific process in the human aspect

can lead to major problems and destructions in the security of our society for the reason

that “it might create a rapid aging population”, “can alter our perceptions of individuality”,

“it reduces the diversity of genetic make-up”, and lastly, “it may steal personal identity or

information and use it for crimes”. Cloning is actually a good scientific process but

using and applying to humans is the one that I don’t trust.
