Echo Sounder Internal Calibration INTRODUCTION Bathymetric survey, sometimes referred to as fathometric survey is a type of hydrographic survey that maps the depths and shapes of underwater terrain of different bodies of water (ocean, rivers, streams and lakes) to illustrate the land that lies below. Bathymetric surveys require a combination of hydrographic and topographic methods. Topographic method is performed to map the areas above the water surface particularly the shorelines using a total station or range finder while hydrographic method maps the underwater terrain using an echo sounder or a line and sinker equipped with a GPS. The underwater topography elevations (depths of sea bed as referenced from the water surface elevation) and shorelines elevations are merged into a digital terrain database as a single map. Sedimentation is a natural process. Sediment is a naturally occurring material that is broken down by process of weathering and erosion and is subsequently transported by the action of wind, water or by the force of gravity acting on the particles. Over a period of years and without sustainable management, the sediment deposits will gradually displace the volume previously used for water storage, until eventually the reservoir becomes completely filled with sediments. As water storage volume is lost, the beneficial uses that depend on storage — such as water supply and flood control- also decline and will eventually be lost. The reduction/loss of water capacity due to sedimentation is being felt in all dam structures. One method of determining the rate of sedimentation in reservoirs is through bathymetric survey. It involves measurement of the river bed topography at a specified time interval and determining the available water capacity of the reservoir. The reduction or increase in the reservoir water capacity which corresponds to the volume of dep jon or scouring of sediments is calculated as the difference between the present (2021 Bathy Survey) and the previous (2012 Bathy Survey) calculated volumes. The Bathymetric Survey of Lumot Reservoir is in compliance to the 2021 DRWD Program of works and GCG requirement for Score Card. The Lumot Reservoir, located in the municipality of Cavinti in the province of Laguna is about 60 Km. southeast of Manila. The main water retaining structures are the 30-meter high Lumot dam and 21-meter high Lumot Dyke which are both rolled earth-fill. Flood releases from the Lumot reservoir are made through a morning glory spillway. Additional water is provided by Lumot to Caliraya Reservoir through the 2.2 Km. connecting waterway. Page 2 of 7 Il. Methodology An echo sounder equipped with a Global Positioning System (GPS) and mounted on a motorized rubber boat was used to determine the configuration of the reservoir bed during the conduct of the reservoir bathymetric survey. Water depths/elevations were measured at several points at an interval of every 10 seconds as the rubber boat traverses on a pre-defined route. The collected data were processed and converted into points (eastings, northings and elevations). The echo sounder depth reading is calibrated daily using depth sounding plate prior to the conduct of bathymetric survey to ensure the accuracy of the equipment readings. This is to check the settings on the echo sounder and adjust sound velocities, depth range and other parameters to conform to the actual depth. This was done daily because sound velocity varies with water temperature and/or turbidity. lll. Data References Collected coordinates were in UTM and elevations were in meters above sea level (masl). The elevation was referenced to the staff gauge located at the Lumot Spillway Area. Page 3 of 7 IV. Survey Results ‘The 2021 Lumot Reservoir bathymetric data was plotted using AutoCad Civil 30 software with built in software for contour generation. Areas for each contour starting from Elev. 270 m up to Elev. 290 m were determined and volumes between contours were computed using end area method. The results were then compared with the 2012 Lumot Bathy Survey by taking the difference of the surface area (2021 - 2012). Positive (+) results mean scouring of sediments while negative (-) results mean deposition of sediments. Tabulated below are the survey results. ‘Shown in Figure 1 is the Lumot Bathymetric Map. Conclusion: The 2021 Bathymetric Survey of Lumot Reservoir confirmed a reduction of 6.063 MCM in the capacity of the reservoir (elev. 290 - 270 mas!) as shown in the tabulated result and reservoir capacity curve which is tantamount to the sediments deposited. As shown in the graph of net area between elevations, scouring of sediments is evident at elevation 290 m and settlements/depositions are mostly at elevations 285 m to 281 m (with a reduction of 720,000 m? and above) and gradually receding at lower elevations. The rate of sediment deposition is 0.67 MCM per year (2012 ~ 2021) The scouring and depositions of the sediments from 2012 to 2021 could be attributed to the drastic change in the land use of Lumot Watershed Areas and increasing human activities (land development, illegal loggings/deforestation, kaingin, charcoal making etc.). During the conduct of bathymetric survey, it was observed that majority of the lands above the normal water level were being developed from farm lands into resorts and business areas resulting to the alteration of the natural ground making more susceptible to erosion. Likewise, proliferations of fish cages were observed wherein feeds could also be a source of sediments and water pollutants.
