Loading Cases
Case 1 (Vertical load with No eccentricity)

The load applied on the foundation is in the center

B.C of the soil will be uniform at any point under the foundation

the general equation for stress under the foundation is:

the load is in the center of the foundation and

there are no moments so, the general equation
will be:
Ultimate Bearing Capacity under
Eccentric
Case 2 (V with M)
foundations are subjected to moments in addition to the vertical load

In such case, the distribution of pressure by the foundation on the soil is not uniform
because there is a moment applied on the foundation and the stress under the
foundation will be calculated from the general relation:
Ultimate Bearing Capacity under Eccentric
Case 2 : Calculation of (e)
1-Loading‫ــــ‬One-Way Eccentricity
Since the pressure under the foundation is not uniform, there are maximum and
minimum pressures (under the two edges of the foundation)
Calculating these two pressures :
General equation for calculating maximum and minimum pressure:.

2-Loading‫ــــ‬Two -Way Eccentricity

Consider a footing subject to a vertical ultimate load Qult and a moment M as shown in
Figures a and b. For this case, the components of the moment M about the x and y axis
are Mx and My respectively. This condition is equivalent to a load Q placed eccentrically
on the footing with x = eB and y = eL as shown in Figure d.
For the square footing (2.5m x 2.5m) shown in the figure below, determine
the allowable resisting moment (M), if the allowable load P = 800 KN and
F.S = 3. (Using Meyerhof Equation).
