Subjective Type
4 Marks Questions : (Q. No. 1 to 6)

1. A uniform rod of length L and mass M is lying on a frictionless pivot m

horizontal plane and is pivoted at one of its ends, as shown in the O
L/3
figure. There is no friction at the pivot. An inelastic ball of mass m is
J
fixed with the rod at a distance L/3 from O. A horizontal impulse J is 2L/3
given to the rod at a distance 2L/3 from O in a direction perpendicular
to the rod. Assume that the ball remains in contact with the rod after
the collision and impulse J acts for a small time interval t.
Find the magnitude of the impulse applied by the pivot during the time interval t.

2. The wheel of radius R rolls without slipping on horizontal

rough surface, and its centre O has an horizontal acceleration
R
a0 in forward direction. A point P on the wheel is a distance r
 a0 v0
from O and angular position  from horizontal. For a given O rP
values of a0, R and r, determine the angle  in terms of r & R
for which point P has no acceleration in this position.

3. A ring of mass M and radius R is held at rest on a rough horizontal

surface. A rod of mass m and length L  2 3R is pivoted at its end A
on the horizontal surface and is supported by the ring. There is no
friction between the ring and the rod. The ring is released from this R

position. Find the acceleration of the ring immediately after the A
release if   60. Assume that friction between the ring on the
horizontal surface is large enough to prevent slipping of the ring. Wall

4. A uniform rod of length  = 75 cm is hinged at one of its ends and is free to rotate in vertical
plane. It is released from rest when the rod is horizontal. When rod becomes vertical, it is
broken at mid point and lower part now moves freely. Calculate distance of the centre of
lower part from hinge, when it again becomes vertical for the first time.

5. A disc of radius r=1m starts rolling on a rough horizontal surface. The angular acceleration of
disc is 3 rad/s2. It is observed that the magnitude of acceleration of point ‘P’ on its
1
circumference is zero at t  sec. The disc may be slipping or sliding.
3
1
At t  sec, find the horizontal component of acceleration of top most point of disc
3

6. A uniform hemisphere with radius R=10 m is placed on a horizontal O

A
smooth surface. Its centre of mass C is below the centre O. An object
‘A’ is placed on the flat surface of the hemisphere at point O. The mass C
of the object is 1/8th of mass of the hemisphere. The coefficient of
friction between the object and the surface of the hemisphere is  = 0.2.
Now the object ‘A’ is displaced slowly along the flat surface of the
hemisphere towards its outer rim. Find the maximum distance (in m) of
the object from the centre O without slipping on the hemisphere.

8 Marks Questions : (Q. No. 7 to 8)
7. A uniform rod of mass m and length 2L on a smooth horizontal A 2L B
surface. A particle of mass m is connected to a string of length L
whose other end is connected to the end ‘A’ of the rod. Initially the L
string is held taut perpendicular to the rod and the particle is given a
velocity v 0 parallel to the initial position of the rod. m V 0

(a) Calculate the acceleration of the centre of the rod immediately after the particle is
projected.
(b) The particle strikes the centre of the rod and sticks to it. Calculate the angular speed of
the rod after this.
8. A uniform solid sphere of mass m and radius R is kept on the
1
rough horizontal surface with co-efficient of friction µ  . An 37°
3
J
impulse of J  mV0 is applied tangentially on the sphere at an angle
37° with horizontal as shown in the figure.
4

5
(a) Angular velocity of centre of mass just after impulse is applied
(b) Find the time after which sphere is in pure rolling motion.
10 Marks Questions : (Q. No. 9 to 12)
9(a) A disc of radius R is spun to an angular speed o about its axis and
V0
R
then imparted a horizontal velocity of magnitude 0 (at t = 0) with its
4 0

and the plane is . The sense of rotation and direction of its linear

yes, how long will it take to return?
(b). A rod mass m hangs by the help of the two string. If the angle each
string makes with the rod is when one string is cut  then the tension in

1  q sin2 
10(a). A uniform rod of mass M and length L is hinged at its end to a wall so
that it can rotate freely in a horizontal plane. When the rod is
F
perpendicular to the wall a constant force F starts acting at the centre F
of the rod in a horizontal direction perpendicular to the rod. The force 
remains parallel to its original direction and acts at the centre of the
rod as the rod rotate. (Neglect gravity). At what angle  (see figure)
the hinge force will make a 45° angle with the rod? Wall

(b). Figure shows a uniform block of mass m  kg and having
13 F

g 3
a car floor which is under constant acceleration a  m/s2 to 
4  a
the right. A horizontal force on the apex of the triangle F is just
enough to just tilt the block. Find the force (in Newton) on the block
at point A where the block is in contact with the step edge, when F
is applied. (Take g=10 m/s2)
11(a). A thin but very large plank of mass 2m is placed on a horizontal m V0
smooth surface. A solid cylinder of mass m and radius r is given
only translation velocity V0 and gently placed on the plank as 2m

the plank and the cylinder is .

(b). A bobbin rolls without slipping over a horizontal surface so that
the velocity v of the end of the thread (point A) is directed along
the horizontal as shown in figure. A board hinged at B leans
against the bobbin as shown in figure. The inner and outer radii
of the bobbin are r and R respectively. Find The angular velocity
of the board as a function of angle 

(c) A disc of mass m and radius R is rolling on a horizontal surface as 

shown. Then (CP = R/2). P
Find the angular momentum of the disc with respect to point P v
c

12(a). In the adjacent figure, a uniform cube of mass m and edge =2m is V0
lying at rest on a rough horizontal surface. A small ball of same mass
m hits the cube as its top edge with horizontal speed v0 and sticks to
it. Friction is so large that the cube can rotate about the edge ‘O’
without sliding. Calculate the minimum value of v0 so that the cube O
will topple. Ignore any loss of energy due to friction at the edge O and
take 2  1  0.4.

3

R
