Course Code: BECM 4203
The potential for additive manufacturing to
transform the construction industry

Department of Building Engineering and Construction Management (BECM) 2

Additive manufacturing/3D Printing

AM, also known as 3D printing, is one of the emerging

advanced technologies aiming to minimize the supply
chain in the construction industry through autonomous
production of building components directly from digital
models; without human intervention and complicated
formwork.

Concrete Characteristics

The four key characteristics of the fresh concrete relevant to 3D

printing are:
1. Pumpability: the ease and reliability with which material is
moved through the delivery system;
2. Printability/Extrudability: the ease and reliability of
depositing material through a deposition device;
3. Buildability: the resistance of deposited wet material to
deformation under load;
4. Open time: the period where these properties are consistent
within acceptable tolerances.

Unmanned Aerial System applications in
construction

Department of Building Engineering and Construction Management (BECM) 15

Unmanned Aerial Systems (UASs)

UASs are platforms for aerial hardware that do not

carry a pilot, can collect and process data, and are
capable of operating autonomously or with direct
human control.
Frequently referred to as drones.

UAS data collection sensors

 A variety of different cameras are the most frequently employed

sensors when UASs are employed in the construction sector.
 Cameras can take aerial photographs (digital/time lapse) or
videos, which can then be processed and either inspected or used
for the generation of 3D project models.

Drone cameras

In the construction sector, various forms of camera may be added to

the UAS, for example:
 RGB: cameras that employ the same red/green/blue color bands
as human eyes, producing an almost exact simulation of human
vision.
 Thermal: cameras that are capable of detecting the heat given off
by virtually every object or material and turning the received data
into videos or images.
 Multispectral: cameras that employ Near Infrared, Red-Edge,
Red and Green wave bands to record images of objects both
visible and invisible to the human eye.
