2.3 Glides
(a) Articulatory characteristics:
 Glides are produced with an articulation similar to a vowel.
 Glides are affected easily by any sound next to them.
 Glides can never constitute the nucleus of a syllable

(b) GLIDES IN ENGLISH: /j/ and w/

/j/: its sound is similar to /ɪ/, but /j/ is shorter and it
constitutes a rapid transition to the following vowel.
Examples: yes, you, yellow, youth, beyond /’jes/ /’ju:/
/’ju(:)θ//’jeləʊ/ /bɪ’jɒnd/

Allophone: /j/ becomes devoiced when it is preceded by a

voiceless consonant: pew /’pj̥u:/ (In order to represent the
devoicing, we write a little circle under/on the glide)
2.3 Glides
GLIDES IN ENGLISH:
/w/: its sound is similar to /ʊ/, but /w/ is softer and the
rounding of the lips is more remarkable in the pronunciation of
the glide.
Examples: queen, question, one /’kw̥i:n/ /’kw̥estʃən/ /wʌn/

Allophone: /w/ becomes devoiced when it is preceded

by a voiceless consonant: queen /’kw̥i:n/

In order to represent the devoicing, we write a little circle

under the glide
