Introduction to the Case
Professional Career: The case study is about Mohan Dixit, a 42 years old individual born and brought
up in Lucknow. He is currently the Head, Sales and Marketing, India operations of Euro MotoCorp Pvt.
Ltd., an automobile multinational headquartered at Munich, Germany. He graduated from Birla Institute
of Technology and Science, Pilani, Rajasthan with specialisation in Mechanical Engineering. After
completing his degree, he moved to Bangalore and started his career as a management trainee at General
Motors, where he worked for about 5 years before receiving an offer from Euro MotoCorp Pvt. Ltd.
During his career span of about 11 years at Euro MotoCorp, he made a steady progress and climbed the
corporate ladder becoming the Regional Marketing Head, Assistant Vice President Marketing, Vice
President Marketing and now the Head, Sales and Marketing, India operations of Euro MotoCorp. Dixit
enrolled for various management courses during the weekends with Indian Institute of Management
Lucknow, Noida Campus.
Personal Life: Mohan is a married individual and has settled down in Noida. He is married to Maya and
has a 11-year-old daughter, Priya. Dixit is passionate about automobiles, sports and found gardening to
be therapeutic. He loves to swim and play cricket. He often liked to be described as a connoisseur of cars
and his friends often sought his advice before purchasing a car. He loves to spend time (whenever he gets
some out of his busy daily schedule) at the shop floor, interacting with design engineers and discussing
the latest trends in car manufacturing.
The day in question: The case talks about the happenings in Mohan’s life on a particular day. The day
was already planned out for Mohan. He had to deliver a key presentation in the afternoon that will be
followed by office meetings and an evening get-together. He also had to catch a flight at 10:30 pm in the
evening for attending a week-long executive education program at IIM Ahmedabad.
Problems of the case.
The major problems as faced by Mohan Dixit in the case study can be sub-divided into 2 categories: -
1. Professional Problems: -
• A hectic and sporadic work schedule, overburdened with work.
• A shoddy superior-subordinate relationship.
• Improper delegation of authority.
2. Personal Problems: -
• Unable to spend quality time with his family.
• Does not get time to work on himself or his hobbies.
• Stressed marriage with no mutual communication of feelings resulting in frequent quarrels.
Alternatives.
In order to tackle the problems Mohit is facing, as mentioned in the previous page, he can evaluate
his options from the following alternatives: -
• Proper delegation of authority: The case has expressed in very clear terms that Mohan has been
unable to delegate his work responsibilities in an efficient manner to his subordinates. Not only
that, he is unappreciative of their work and holds them responsible for any group failure. Mohit
can work on improving his leadership skills and at the same time have a nurturing and trusting
relationship with his subordinates by delegating them work, setting deadlines, listening to their
problems and giving them performance feedback.
• Be more outspoken about his problems: Throughout the case study, Mohit has been portrayed as
a people pleaser. He cannot say no to anyone (especially his superiors) for any extra responsibility
assigned to him (example: when he was appointed as Chairperson of the Grievance Handling
Committee). However, to have a proper work life balance, it is very important for Mohan to limit
his responsibilities to a certain extent so that he can take out time for himself. This makes it
critical for Mohan to be more outspoken rather than keeping things to himself.
• Make his work the priority for the near future: Mohan needs to make a decision on where does
his priority lie? Work or family. A clear decision will help him to prioritize his responsibilities
towards his professional and personal life and manage his time better.
• Put himself and his family ahead of his job: As mentioned in the point above.
Criteria.
The criterion which will influence Mohan’s decision can be enumerated as follows: -
• Stress free work life: It takes into consideration both the delegation and communication problems
stated earlier. Weightage: 4/4
• More time with his family: Help Mohan in mending his family relations and be there for his wife
and daughter. Weightage: 3/4
• Successful Professional Career: Mohan is highly ambitious in his approach towards his
professional life. He tries his best to keep his superiors happy and always aims higher (in terms of
promotions). Weightage: 2/4
• An improved physical and mental health: Mohan has been trying for long to get his body in
shape and reduce his mental load. However, if he achieves the goals mentioned above, physical
and mental well-being is something which will come naturally. Weightage: 1/4
Analysis.
For analysing the various alternatives, the following table will help to rate how the various alternatives
will help to satisfy the different criterion for decision making out of 10, with 10 being the criteria that is
satisfied the most and 1 being the criteria that is satisfied the list.
It is assumed that ratings are not relative, i.e., two criteria can receive the same rating.

Decision.
As evident from the quantitative analysis of the decision criterion and the alternatives, Mohan should opt
for “Proper Delegation of Authority” as the immediate solution for his personal and professional
problems he is facing. The decision will have the following impact on the problems he is facing: -
1. Professional Problems: -
• Mohan can share his work responsibilities with his subordinates to reduce the stress and
burden of responsibilities on himself.
• A proper delegation of authority will help Mohan build a more trusting relationship with his
subordinates.
• Mohan can focus his attention towards those decision areas which require his talent and
expertise the most, rather than dividing his focus on routine work which can be delegated to
the sub-ordinates.
2. Personal Problems: -
• Mohan will have enough time on his hands to spend with his closed ones by divesting the time
he spent in his office to his family.
• Mohan will also get the opportunity to work on his hobbies, go to the gym and loose those
extra kilos.
Implementation.
For implementing the decision in an effective manner, Mohan can take the following steps: -
• Attend a webinar/course on effective delegation of authority from an industry leader or an
experienced professional or take tips from his superiors at Euro MotoCorp, so as to become an
effective delegator and work on the areas he lacked in the past.
• Considering the trust issues, he has had with his subordinates in the past, Mohan should first
gauze their efficiency by assigning them tasks with minimal impact on the team and company’s
performance to identify the subordinates who show signs of productivity. Mohan can then go
about assigning work accordingly.
• Mohan can hold informative sessions on a regular basis for his subordinates wherein he shares
his own work experience such as how he solved business problems, he faced in real time to
improve the business acumen of his subordinates. This will positively impact their performance
on the work assigned to them by Mohan.
• Feedback mechanisms, occasional group recreational activities will strengthen the superior
subordinate relationship for Mohan and his subordinates.
