INTRODUCTION
1.1 This schedule defines the test program to cover the drop test clearance of the
NAC6 main landing gear.
This testing is to comply with the following Airworthiness requirements.
 BCAR Section K Issue 6
 FAR Part 23 Change 17

2. TEST UNIT
2.1 One Main Shock Absorber 4427 H1 fully charged and inflated to 240 psi.
2.2 One trailing arm assembly (to be supplied by NAC)
2.3 One nose wheel fitted with Goodyear 29 x 11.00-10 10 PR at 55 psi inflation
pressure (wheel and tyre to be supplied by NAC).
2.4 Throughout these tests all inflation must be with Nitrogen.

3. LEAKAGE
3.1 In any of the following tests there must be no leakage of oil or gas to
atmosphere. If any leakage does occur, it must be rectified and the unit retested
to PAS 4427 H1.

4. PRELIMINARY CHECKS
4.1 The standards tests and checks prior to the start of any drop test program should
be carried out. These are recorded in Appendix A.

5. DROP TESTS -General

OBSERVE RIG SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS THROUGHOUT. SEE T.O.S. 1097 PARA
1.0
5.1 Take the correctly charged and inflated leg of paragraph 2.1 (See PAS 4427 H1
for charging and inflation instructions). Assemble the wheel with the 29x11.00-10
tyre to the trailing arm assembly using the correct washers and nuts.
5.2 Record the weight of the oleo leg assembly.
5.3 Before carrying out the 'tail up' tests of section 7, 'tail up' preliminary drops are to
be carried out at lower drop heights as described in section 6. This order is also
to be followed for the 'tail down' drops.
5.4 Mount the assemblies of para 5.1 into the skip in an attitude appropriate to the
tests to be conducted (see Table 1) together with the correct skip loads.
5.5 Tests must be performed in accordance with the procedure of TOS 1097 para
1.2 and 1.3 (i.e. Rig Safety Instructions).
5.6 The Technical Office must be informed prior to the commencement of each test
and their approval of its results obtained before commencing the next test. They
will check that the orifice areas and inflation pressure are satisfactory. The
Technical Office will also check that the mass dropped has shown the required
energy to have been absorbed using Fig Nos. 1-3.
5.7 If any change is required to gas pressure only, then this may be made with the
leg in position on rig but the test being proved will need to be repeated.
5.8 If any change is required to the orifice the oleo leg will be removed from the drop
test rig and returned to the workshops to be deflated and dismantled. The
Technical Office will specify new orifice. The leg must be reassembled to
drawing 4427 H1 and pressurized to Technical Office requirements. The test
being proved will need to be repeated.
5.9 If changes to paragraph 5.7 or 5.8 are necessary, further testing will be required
to cover any tests carried out prior to adjustments such that a complete set of
tests is performed on the final configuration.

6. DROP TESTS - Preliminary

ft/sec descent velocity). Initial equivalent mass to be dropped is 2260 lb.
6.7 As test 7 in Table 1 except that the drop height will be 6.7 ins (equivalent to 6
ft/sec descent velocity). Initial equivalent mass to be dropped is 2600 lb.
6.8 As test 7 in Table 1 except that the drop height will be 11.9 ins (equivalent to 8
ft/sec descent velocity). Initial equivalent mass to be dropped is 2960 lb.

7. DROP TESTS - Compliance

7.1 The tests are to be carried out as detailed in Table 1. The objective here is to
identify that the leg is performing satisfactorily with loads and displacements
within the limiting conditions.
7.2 During each test the following parameters must be recorded against time:
Strut Closure inches
Mass travel inches
Vertical load lb.
Drag load lb.
Wheel speed rpm
Internal pressure psi
7.3 For each test the following should also be recorded:
Drop test number see Table 1
Inflation pressure psi
Compression orifice area sq. in
Recoil orifice area sq. in
Attitude (tail up or tail down)
Drop height ins
Mass dropped lb.
End of spin - for spin tests only and any other comments regarding rebound, rebound
height, etc.
7.4 These tests are to be carried out such that on completion the requirements of
Table 1 have been fully investigated and a full set of results for the final leg
configuration is available.
7.5 After each drop, the oleo leg should be checked for evidence of leakage, wear,
physical damage and that the wheel still rotates freely. The oleo inflation
pressure and tyre pressure should also be checked after allowing a period of
time for cooling.
8. INSPECTION OF UNIT
When all the tests have been satisfactorily completed, deflate, drain and dismantle
unit. As unit is dismantled: check seals and any other unexpected situation. Crack
detection must be carried out on critical items.

9. TEST OBSERVERS
Testing may be observed by a delegate from Norman Aircraft Company Limited an
the CAA. The Technical Office shall notify Norman Aircraft Company Limited and the
CAA when drop tests are about to commence.

10. TEST REPORT

10.1 A test report will be written by the Development Department on completion of
the test. This report shall contain details of the testing carried out, details of
instrumentation, test equipment and method of testing. The format of the report
is to be jointly agreed by the Technical Office and the Development Department.
Data will be plotted directly from the Apple PC of all graphical results required
from this test. Reference should also be made to any queries or concession
relating to the components being tested. In the event of component damage
during the test, then photographs and details of the damage item should be
included.

10.2 The following information shall be presented in the test report.

 Labeled graphical results described in section 7.2 against time for the
compliance drop tests.
 Plots of vertical ground reaction versus stroke for all compliance drop tests and
all preliminary drop tests.
 Plots of vertical ground reaction versus mass travel for all compliance drop tests
and all preliminary drop tests.
 An identification by part number of all the landing gear components.
 A drawing showing the full details of the final metering arrangement.
 A measured recording of strut and tyre inflation pressures.
 A plot of calculated tyre deflection versus time.
 A sketch showing attitude of gear with respect to ground and test jig.
 The % of total vertical energy absorbed by the initial compression stroke for all
compliance drop tests.
 The coefficient of friction between tyre and simulated landing surface for the
compliance drop tests involving spin up.
APPENDIX A
STANDARD TESTS AND CHECKS REQUIRED PRIOR TO START OF
ANY DROP TEST PROGRAME
1. Ensure unit has been PAS tested and results are available. Ensure that the unit
and wheels and tyre each have the correct part numbers.
2. Ensure the oleo is correctly charged and inflated before commencing EACH test.
3. Ensure tyre is correctly inflated.
4. Determine the pressure at which oleo starts to extend (i.e. the #break-out#
pressure is within any known requirements).
5. Determine the isothermal aircurve for the drop test charge pressure - recording
load and pressure against strut closure. The aircurve should cover strut closures
up to at least 3/4 of the maximum strut closure available. CHECK that this
pressure isothermal aircurve correlates with theoretical aircurve - refer to the
Technical Office.
6. Determine the tyre isothermal aircurve for the drop test tyre pressure - recording
tyre closure against load and initial tyre pressure.
7. Record the tyre foot print as the isothermal aircurve is being determined. Plot tyre
deflection against contact area. CHECK that the tyre deflection against contact
area correlates with manufacturing data - refer to the Technical Office.
8. If a centering cam is present the minimum pressure at which centering occurs
should be determined. CHECK that this pressure is within any known
requirements.
9. Determine the maximum stroke available or check PAS results. CHECKS that
this value equals the quoted by the manufacturer.
10. Results of these tests and checks should be sent to the Technical Office for
inspection before any drop test program is started. These tests and checks are to
ensure that the undercarriage and tyre in the test rig are suitable for the drop test
program.
11. These requirements are displayed by the drop test rigs.
