Remarkable Movements from the Past
Delhi, officially the National Capital Territory of Delhi, is a city and a
union territory of India containing New Delhi, the capital of India.
Straddling the Yamuna river, primarily its western or right bank, Delhi
shares borders with the state of Uttar Pradesh in the east and with the
state of Haryana in the remaining directions. During the Delhi Durbar on
12th December 1911, George V, then emperor of India, along with the Queen
made the announcement that Capital of India shifted from Calcutta to
Delhi, while laying the foundation stone of Capital of India in Coronation
Park.

The Mau Mau uprising convinced the British of the need for reform in
Kenya and the wheels were set in motion for the transition to independence.
On 12 December 1963 Kenya became an independent nation under the
Kenya Independence Act. Queen Elizabeth II remained the nation’s Head of
State until exactly a year later, when Kenya became a republic.

Shivaji Rao Gaikwad born on 12 December 1950, known professionally
as Rajinikanth[ , is an Indian actor, producer and screenwriter. In a career
spanning over five decades, he has done 160 films that includes films in Tamil,
Hindi, Telugu, Kannada, Bengali, and Malayalam. The Government of India
honoured him with Padma Bhushan in 2000, Padma Vibhushan in 2016,
India's third and second highest civilian honours, and Dadasaheb Phalke
Award in 2019 for his contributions to Indian cinema.

Mulk Raj Anand born on 12 December 1905, was an Indian writer in


English, recognised for his depiction of the lives of the poorer castes in
traditional Indian society. One of the pioneers of Indo-Anglian fiction, he,
together with R. K. Narayan, Ahmad Ali and Raja Rao, was one of the first
India-based writers in English to gain an International readership. He received
many accolades and honors including International Peace Prize in 1953, Padma
Bhushan in 1967 and Sahithya Akademi Award in 1971.

Yuvraj Singh born on 12 December 1981, is a former Indian


international cricketer who played in all formats of the game. In a match
against England at the 2007 World Twenty20, he famously hit six sixes in one
over bowled by Stuart Broad. He was awarded with the Arjuna Award
(India's second highest, Sporting Award) in 2012 by the President of India and
Padma Shri Award in 2014.
